interesting question , anybody know the answer

20 posts in this topic

Hi there, my question is over my last 3 harvests, each approx 3 days long, Everytime I have noticed by the third day, I do a clean up around the floor area of any bud that has fallen on the floor from day 1 or 2 for example, and I keep coming across some unbelievable smelling buds that are absolutely glistening and pretty dry and I can't work out how they have got like this as the ones on the rack are not as similar so to speak, as stated its happened everytime

during the night on day 1 and 2 I am turning off all lights and temps dropping to around 16

any idea ????

There's your answer, right there.

A lot of growers, at the end of a grow, switch the lights off and leave the plants in darkness for 48 hours, then they chop.... this makes the plants produce more trichomes (hence the juicyness) and more terpenes (hence the smell).

Really?

I thought this was an old wives tale ??

Any science behind this amazing claim?

@lildaveham I think it's something to do with stressing the plant out, and it produces more resin as a defence mechanism. don't ask me why, I do it occasionally and notice the difference, other growers do it all the time and swear by it. I just smoke the stuff mate and go by evidence based rather than scientific fact so don't try rattling my cage, eh!

If you want the science though, ask @AutoMaster, I'm sure he'll give you an education.

@teehee

I certainly wasn’t trying to rattle your cage fella sorry if I came across that way. It’s a question I ask often as I like to see a claim backed up by evidence and if scientific all the better one imo. I’m sure I don’t need automaster to give me an “education” as you put it but if he has an explanation of said increased trichs and terpenes great but I suspect it will be something about light and heat degrading the more volatile terps that would also would be gone once dry.

Peace

I'm no expert in this either but if plants produce resin as a defence in the first place, stands to reason if they are further stressed (at the right time and in the right way)

they will throw out more resin to protect themselves? As long as they're coated I'm happy...:yep:

Btw the buds the op is talking about are ones on the floor that have been chopped on day 1 or 2 so couldn’t have produced more resin or terps as they were cut off the plant. lol

Thats how I read it anyhoo.

I think the debate of darkness before the chop has Been raging as long as I have been a member here lol

, I sometimes crop in stages over a few days (I'm sure others do as well) the last plants I trim never look any different to the first ones I crop

I`ve certainly never noticed a difference in gland production if they get left in the dark, I did it numerous times back in the day and neverr noticed a change from same strains taken immediately, what definitely does increase production is UVB light :yep:

OP, i`ve dropped multitudes of buds onto the cab floor while drying and never noticed this tbh. Not saying it doesn't happen for you, it just hasn't for me though. Hope to hear what others have experienced. :yinyang:

Ive found leaving the lights off for 48hours, you run more risk off getting the rot.Plants transpiring for 48hrs humidity goes through the roof.Keeping the temps high when it would have lights on time etc.Youll need a very dialled in room imo.
