buds smell and taste of hay - first grow/harvest

20 posts in this topic

hey guys, thinking it could be too hot a dry, terpenes evaporate over 18 C. i hoping this is not the case but a nice slow dry of 15C 60% humidity for 5 days then 50% humidity maintaining 15C if possible hope you recover it. best of luck.

Aside from the advice above I'm a big believer in avoiding light stress. Next time you get a bit of foxtailing and light burn try drying those bits, they will smell like hay.

I often dry and jar the plant in steps. The only bits that should be lacking on a decent plant are any light starved lowers or light stressed tops if you've not managed the canopy enough.

Also don't dry too hot - that'll do it, I prefer a lower room temp dry at about 45-50% rh for a week to 2 weeks on stems followed by nugs in open top wide mouth jars for a week with regular turning at least daily. Then a month or more with either 58 or 62% bovedas. Key is not to lose the volatile terpenes, which is why I jar it earlier than most. Just keep an eye on the softness and waft/turn as required.

The potency issue you describe won't be a drying issue though. That's either genetics, stress or harvest timing most likely.

I think youre spot on there man.... i recently advised my pal to remove half his lighting as it was overkill. He was thinking more light equals more bud .... not the case for him. 2400 watts in a space i would only run 1200. Hist latest runs just been harvested and hes chuffed to bits. No longer tastes like shit, kept the terps and smoking now has the desired affect.... however i dont go in for boveda at all. Ive found they can strip the flower of taste and aroma.

Y'know that's not the first time I've heard that. Personally I only leave them in during the cure to keep it at 62 or 58  anything being kept longer goes in vac jars but maybe I should do a side-by-side test?

I've run two jars of same crop, one with Boveda 62 and the other with nothing (both already hung dry and paper bagged before jarring) - both came out smelling and tasting the same to me.

Not a conclusive test, but alleviated my fears that Boveda packs can ruin the smell somewhat.

Interestingly, the non Boveda jar kept almost the exact same RH reading as the Boveda jar throughout the cure, although the Boveda jar did seem to stabilise slightly faster.

I have been using Bovidas for a few years now and I havent noticed any loss in flavour and smell, I have some 8 month cured jars with them in and it reeks and tastes lovely.
