Fractal Burning

Posted (edited)

I'm seriously considering building one of these as the effect it gives is stunning, it's right up my street.

Crazy stuff though, you don't want to get this wrong, and my electrical knowledge is limited at best!

How to make it....the microwave transformer is the most dangerous, higher amps, a neon light transformer is safer, but perhaps less readily available.

I'm blown away by this, perhaps literally so if I try it and fuck it up....lol

I showed my girlfriend this last night....she just rolled her eyes and said "Leave my fucking microwave alone." lol

Not tried it yet, hope to soon. I think it's a dark art to get it looking good like this^^ but love the effect. Not so sure about the shocks tho!

I've got my eye out for some Catalpa now, it looks lovely...:yep:

I'll be trying to avoid the shocks if I build a machine, it's a bit of a "mad professor" build granted, but done right it should be ok...I think....

You get that pattern on the skin of people hit by lightening, eh? Always thought it looked cool, but don't fancy the process much.

@j.o.i.n.t, aye, it is a bit of a process, but I think done carefully and correctly with sensible precautions it should be safe enough. Going by the vids I've seen it looks pretty straightforward, even with my limited electrical know how. (He says.....lol)

I'm wondering if you could use a welder as a power unit, keep the ground and rewire the welding wand to a clip.

I've not researched it yet, but I have the feeling if a welder could be used it would be common knowledge as it seems much safer and easier to build.

@Cambium, if you build a machine please let me know how you get on! :yep:

Very cool!

I don't  think a welder would work. Welder transformers are low voltage/ high current, whereas microwave transformers are high voltage/ low current. You can make a welder out of a microwave transformer, but it involves re wrapping the secondary coil to change it from step up to  step down

Thanks @Mr blue:yep: I was sure there would be a reason it wouldn't work as it's too simple to be true.....I was thinking the voltage would be wrong, but wasn't sure....see my limited electrical knowledge coming through? lol

I've lived my life with the DIY mantra of "Don't fuck with electricity or gas" so this is all new to me.
