silencer and filter questions - location for best effects

all right everyone, Hope you are all coping with the heat ok.

im building a grow room and have bought a duct silencer.

my question is... which of the following would be most effective , at silencing.

my options are either;

 1) filter-----fan-----silencer-----duct or.....

2) filter---- fan-----duct----silencer

anybody got any experience using these?

also, it looks like my carbon filter is gonna have to go on the ground, vertically instead of hung up high.

Do you think this will effect heat in the room, or will it just extract the same?

anyone know?

It will extract the same amount of air but the extracted air will be cooler, fresher air as cool air sinks. I recently went from one to the other. When I raised my can from vertically on the floor to horizontal at ceiling height, I noticed a 2-3 degree drop in room temps. One way to combat the effects of your can being on the floor is to make the air at the floor, but just where the can is, the same air as the air at the ceiling by putting a fan above the can pointing down, to make the can surrounded in the hot air from the top of the room so that will be what it extracts, if you have space.

Afraid I cannot help with which is the quieter setup, I have not used an inline silencer, although I would suspect that the more things like carbon cans after the silencer the better. If your filter has to be first I suspect option 1 is better but I really could not call it without testing both.

Thanks for your help.

I think im gonna have to re-think this one, and mount it up higher.

I got it set up today and wired it into my fan controller and they hum and buzz  like fook.

I had 8 inch in and 12 inch out, so I removed the big fan and tried the single 8 inch out with passive intake-no use its still buzzing away with this controller. I cant understand why its so noisy, I had 2 of these controllers before and they never made a sound, no buzzing humming or any of that, but they were on a 6 inch in and 8 inch out. I would have thought that a 8 inch out is a 8 inch out, but for some reason its buzzing on this one.

Im gonna get my variac controller built and see how bad it is before I splash the cash on a quieter fan, but just now its too loud.

This one is off to ebay land.

Silencers are really good, they are a bit expensive but its a one off payment and they last forever

You mount it directly to the fan, filter-fan-silencer is the way it works

im using silencers mate, but its still too loud for my liking.

Most of the noise is fan buzz and hum so im hoping the variacs will solve it.

Silencers work on the turbulence of the air and they make a significant difference to the noise from the air but humming comes from the motor usually being controlled with a crappy motor controller thats, lets be honest, unfit for purpose

Silencers are great but they arent totally noise free need an oversized fan and a decent controller for that

yeah the silencers do work, they definitely reduce the noise output.

,i just need a variac controller and it should be sorted
