It's because they're primary use is for preserving,  while food going in is hot the inner lid goes on, creates a seal then screw on the outer.

Right.  I imagined they'd just fill it hot, lid it and let the cooling vaccuum suck it down down.  Glad thats the way it is, I get it now, thanks Pushka.

Some weed makes the lid act like a vacuum and some that act more like a compression camber and the lid pops as you're unscrewing it, made me jump once lol

I picked up 8x500ml wide neck two part lidded kilners the other day for a decent price (£21) on a well known online retail site.

 

I don't plan to use for weed primary (fermentation FTW!) but I do like the wide mouth, makes it easy to put stuff in and take stuff out.

 

I do prefer the seal on the two part kilners. The seal on the clippy ones is problematic for me, I can't trust them with liquid but I like the sizes.

You can buy the two part lids in different sizes and put them on non-kilner jars.
