Ducksfoot double trouble

I'm growing Auto Duck again this year, and also some Frisian Duck. Have to say props to Dutch Passion for bringing ducksfoot strains to the mass market. I have sought out specialist breeders too, but the two strains offered by DP are becoming mainstays of my outdoor grows due to their relative stealth and the fact they're feminised seeds - more convenient than regs.

Anyway, after last year's polytunnel mouldfest I am going to try growing Auto Duck properly outdoors this summer. I have four seedlings in the veg cab just now, they'll be going outside in a couple of weeks. They're in the centre of the pic below.

I've also been growing a single Frisian Duck by the window for just over a month, I topped her a couple of weeks ago and am rooting the top as a clone. I hope to make some more clones from her, she's acting as an outdoor mum for now, but will go outside eventually too. Don't have any recent pics of her or the cutting, will post again soon with an update.

I really like the mutant cannabis strains, I imagine it must have been difficult to stabilise the ducksfoot traits when making these crosses. I've heard lots about the resilience of Frisian Duck in particular. I'm looking forward to seeing how these two strains perform outside at nearly 56ºN.

If I get time, I might try to pollinate some of the girls with some specialist pollen from another ducksfoot strain, see what the results are. We'll see if I can manage that, hopefully.

Anyway, more updates in a bit, with some extra pics.

As promised, some pics of the Frisian Duck mum and her daughter clone. Mum is looking like she needs potted up. Will do that soon, in the meantime I gave her a top dress with some extra soil. She looks a bit hungry too, I'll give her a light feed. The wee clone has rooted successfully and is pretty vigorous. Roots were poking out the bottom of the pot, so she'll need potting up soon too. I took her out of the propagator and she has joined clones from other strains at the window. I'm aiming to get at least three clones, and maybe a few more as backup, before the mum goes outside.

  • 3 weeks later...

Planted out the four Auto Duck girls this evening. The two larger specimens went into buckets at my "garden" plot. The two smaller girls went one each into the two "easy" plots. Once the larger plants reach five nodes (soon by the looks of it) I will top them and try to root out the tops, any resulting clones will be planted in the "easy" plots as a second wave.

Went to check on the Auto Duck girls yesterday, gave them some feed and cut back any encroaching vegetation. Have to say I am quite impressed by the sudden growth spurt shown by all of them. The two bigger girls are really going for it. The two smaller girls progressing more modestly, but still doing fine. They don't get as many hours of sun as the bigger girls, their plots spend more time in shade. Great to see them enjoying life outside. The two big girls are nearly ready to top, but not quite. Next visit.

On way back from meeting a friend I dropped in to visit the Auto Duck girls. They're 40 days old and doing fine, all have grown since last visit. The two larger girls are ready to top. I'll be down again tomorrow and will do that then. Gave them a feed tonight. Amazing how well they're doing given how cold it is just now. Really chilly north east breeze, lots of sun during the day but bloody parky!

Apologies for the poor focus on some of these photos - it was ten in the evening so lower light levels, seems to throw the auto focus on the phone a bit.

Mini-update on the Auto Ducks, and some pics. Visited them yesterday, Day 45, gave them a feed. The two big girls were topped on Saturday, so wanted to see how they were getting on. They seem to be doing just fine, possibly slowed slightly after losing their tops. The smaller girls are starting to catch up, but as explained previously they don't get as much direct sun so they're a bit slower overall. But it's all good so far.

Went to see how the Auto Duck were getting on this evening, gave them a feed. They are 53 days old. The two larger girls look like they are about to flower. They're getting nice and bushy after topping, and staying low which is good for stealth. The two smaller girls are stretching, but no sign of flower yet. One has been nibbled by caterpillars by the looks of it. All doing fine though.

Pottering around my collection of cuts and clones by the window this lunchtime. Keen readers may recall I topped the two larger Auto Ducks a couple of weeks ago and put the tops to root. Well, the cuts are alive, but both are starting to flower :wallbash:. A nearby Joshua cut is flowering too.

I suppose the old adage that auto clones are the same age as the mums is coming true here. It's a bit odd, because previous experience seems to show a delay in flowering when an auto is cloned. It could be strain dependent, or it could be that the Auto Ducks were very close to flower when topped, or it could be environmental, given the mums are growing outside. Whatever the reason, looks like I'll just get a couple of buds on sticks out of it :D .

Not sure whether to pot up, plant out, whatever. Because I'm not entirely convinced the cuts have rooted yet. Is it really possible they're flowering without roots? Anyway, my instinct is to pot up and bung them outside. Maybe in a few days' time...

Stopped by the main Auto Duck plot yesterday evening, just to check how the girls are getting on after the downpour. They're fine, growing well in early flower and bushing out, especially the largest girl. I gave them some tomato feed and weeded the pots a bit, topped up the slug pellets. Lovely aroma comes off the big girl when touched. Didn't have time to visit the two smaller girls, next time.

Yesterday was Summer Solstice. The days start getting shorter, little by little, from today until late December. I had hoped to plant out my photoperiod girls by now, but it will be next week most likely.

This evening I did manage to visit the two smaller Auto Ducks. Gave them some tomato feed as they are just starting to flower. The taller of the two has been nibbled quite a lot by caterpillars - spotted a few butterflies nearby (Cabbage White by the looks of them). Not sure I can do about it other than fine mesh netting. Bit late now... The shorter girl is fine. Both are a bit behind the other, larger girls but they don't get as many hours of sun so no surprise.

Some of the pics are a bit out of focus, sorry.
