You are thinking of GreenNinja. I just noticed the same thing yesterday. Great minds and all that. :shuriken: :ninja: Weird that we even have similar avatars.

and after reading this guide i've just managed to replace the bearings in my old[6yrs] rvk 150A1

got some 608zz abec 5's from a bearing stockist in town this afternoon and set to after tea.

mine had the dustcap covering the bearing too,you can prise this out with virtually no damage if you're careful.just prise up at the edges working round evenly with a flat blade screwdriver or whatever and it'll pop off ok.

the motor cover didnt slide off as easily as the pics made me think, gently even prying again.

i pushed the bearings out using the pestle off an ornamental brass mortar and pestle[the thin end went through the inner race hole]and used it to gently tap the bearings out.I was tapping on the inner race which knackers 'em but doesnt matter as they're knackered anyway.

Then i cleaned out the bearing recesses with a tissue, drop of oil on my finger to lube em back in and used a socket to tap them home. One goes in further than the other btw.

All that was pretty easy tbh, putting the circlip back on was the hardest bit really fiddly used 2 screwdriver blades and much gnashing of teeth,to ease it back in....screwed it all back together and voila it's done!!!!

upon testing it's loads quieter.so apart from a minor screwdriver laceration from said wrestle with circlip-i'm a very happy camper cheers

loads quieter is the understatement of the year!!!

i've hung it back up connected it all and withoput a doubt this fan is quieter now than when it was new! all you can hear is air rushing through and i haven't even got it boxed up.

wow what a difference, thanks loads bigbudburge ace thread

Guest Nasty little man

Just changed the bearings on a 8", firstly a massive thanks for this thread and anyone who gave advice within it. Only tips I can add is use a scalpel to remove the silver plate covering the bearings, came of in seconds and when piecing it back together to put the little round clip back in place it's very difficult so I suggest using the old bearing to lay it otop and apply pressure it works a treat! Many thanks

Just got round to changing the bearings on my RVK 100 I can confirm they are indeed 626z 6mm internal diameter 19mm external diameter and 6mm depth.

Just so you guys know and don't have to take your fan apart a second time, there is a washer on one of the bearings, make sure you keep it and put it back in. I forgot and it made the fan vibrate. put it back in (under the circlip) sorted it right out.

You porbably won't find this size in skate shops as they tend to use the 608z. You will need a bearing designed for electrical appliances. I got sealed ones as humidity may be a concern.

Hope this helps and thanks to the OP for starting this all those years ago :):guitar: :guitar:

time to give this another Bump

my turn to upgrade the Bearings in my 5" A1 Systemaire Rvk fan, the fans been in constant use for about 5-6 yrs but now its starting to rattle a bit,

so time to upgrade, for the 5" A1 fan, you need 2 626-2Z Bearings (the 2Z bit means double shielded) the 5" L1 fan take 608-ZZ Bearings.

right, heres the fan, looking a bit tatty with glue residue all over it & loads of crud inside.

the first thing to do is to unscrew the 4 self tapper screws going around the middle of the fan, they hold the 2 sections of the fans casing.

gallery_36349_2174_43128.jpg

heres the Bearings next to a pound coin.

gallery_36349_2174_69941.jpg

next up is to unscrew the 4 screws holding the motor in the fans outtake vent.

gallery_36349_2174_116713.jpg

this is the 2 case sections.

gallery_36349_2174_41308.jpg

heres a close up of the fan cage.

gallery_36349_2174_33695.jpg

next, you have to take the wiring out of the case.

gallery_36349_2174_19179.jpg

& if you turn the fan over, the motor comes off easily.

this is the back of the Motor with the spindle cap in.

gallery_36349_2174_27167.jpg

i tried a scalpal but couldnt move it so i used a screw driver to punch a hole through it & it popped off, you can also see the circlip.

gallery_36349_2174_147514.jpg

i'd bought a set of circlip pliers for a few quid but they were useless, your better using a small flat screwdriver to take it off

gallery_36349_2174_95485.jpg

heres the circlip off.

gallery_36349_2174_57952.jpg

heres the fans Motor being lifted out of the Fans assembly.

gallery_36349_2174_100589.jpg

this is the Fan assembly, notice that theres a spring & a washer on the spindle.

gallery_36349_2174_81910.jpg

this is the back of the Motor & you can see the Bearing.

gallery_36349_2174_198001.jpg

i used a long screw driver to knock the old Bearings out.

heres the old Bearings with a few bashes.

gallery_36349_2174_111282.jpg

for fitting the new Bearings in, i used a socket head & a rubber mallet.

gallery_36349_2174_123139.jpg

heres one fitted.

gallery_36349_2174_165678.jpg

& the other.

gallery_36349_2174_95351.jpg

gallery_36349_2174_15039.jpg

now time to fit the Motor back into the Fans assembly, mind the spring & washer is on the spindle.

gallery_36349_2174_103104.jpg

the Fans on the spindle but the springs sprung so you need to press the Motor down until the groove on the spindles visible & you can fit the circlip.

gallery_36349_2174_8513.jpg

gallery_36349_2174_49515.jpg

gallery_36349_2174_15653.jpg

now to fit the fan back onto the VegCab temporarily & add a bit of solid ducting until i get round to making a Leepy box for the fan.

gallery_36349_2174_15653.jpg

gallery_36349_2174_78587.jpg

gallery_36349_2174_8391.jpg

gallery_36349_2174_75237.jpg

Total cost for the upgrade - £2 for the pliers  & £ 3.50 for the Bearings delivered :yep:
