I did hear they were getting banned/phased out, but they said that about incandescents years ago and you can still get hold of those as well so I'd imagine these T5 tubes will be about for a while longer. 

Sparky here. Yeah they've been phasing out fluorescent in stages for 2Years now. 

February this year was all T8, T5 and PL lamps and i think eventually next year will see the end of SON / METAL HALLIDE. 

 

It's come in through a COSHH legislation by UK GOV, nothing to do with the EU. 

 

You can get led tube replacements but it requires bypassing the inner guts to give 230v to the lamp holder.
