Recommended Spyware/adware/anti-virus Software

Recommended Posts

just to point out that cw shredder hasnt been supported since june 2k4 & may well miss many new variants of the coolwebsearch spy/adware(tho still very effective for older versions).

heres some variants(and a wee bit of info) worth googling for anyone interested:

/bootconf (adds www.coolwebsearch.com to your trusted zone sites, this allows it to download and install code)

/datanotary (copies css sheet to windows folder, redirects & adds some cool xxx popups to your browsing experience)

/dnsrelay (hooks into ie bar searches redirecting to activexupdate.com or similar)

/msinfo (note drops a file by same name with a exe extension into the windows folder, not to be confused with the msinfo32.exe in the same folder which is a legitimate windows file. runs from the win ini file and redirects to true-counter.com)

/msspi ( a bastard, impersonates a winsock2 layered service making it a right fecker to get rid off)

/smartkiller (awesome variant, closes browser windows used to access anti spyware or security sites to protect itself)

/svchost (points all main search sites such as yahoo or google to localhosts, why? because localhosts isnt running a webserver, so attempts generate an error page.... its the error that delivers the payload to redirect you to clawsearch.com

reason for theyre being so many variants is that coolwebsearch is really a toolkit for redirecting ppl to somewhere they dont wanna go & although theres been pressure on the web hosts of these sites, it`s believed that these over 1000 domains associatted wi cws(coolwebsearch).

have fun peeps.

lol

"Windows.Genuine.Advantage.Validation.v1.3.272.0" may bring up some interesting results in google also if your XP(sp2?) OS has recently stopped updating itself. (from another post).

I`ve got a couple of things to do TFK, but I`ll try to help you m8 :)

Run a decent firewall, anti virus package both regularly updated & schedule atleast one full system scan from the a/v for through the night if the pc is left on 24/7(if not, you`ll need to run it in your own time) :)

Same with your OS(windows etc) make sure you have it fully patched and thats a huge help too.

Spy/Malware is a terrible threat while your pc is online!

I`d personally reccommend that everyone uses atleast one program to catch them, set up properly!

I have 3 on here, spyware doctor, one as part of my zonealarm security suite & the built in windows app.

Anti spyware has many guises but can also be delt with by never trusting anything through your firewall your not sure about :stoned:

I keep ontop by visiting security sites online. :yinyang:

ie:

The microsoft tech net site is a great starting point for hackers looking for new windows vulnerabilitys, the problems may be discussed as a patch is being written or always pre the patch release.

cheers mdp for taking some time out for us, i supose ime getting ready really for when my mcfee ends, i did download spybot & ad-ware and done a sweep and they did turn up quite a few dangers on my pc and so i cleard it all and all seems to be well, may i just say i never had any problems when i came onto this thread i was just asking for some recomendations regarding the title of this thread, and as i say i dont mind really paying for something that is going to work? although spybot and ad-ware came up with alot of probs that mcfee never, that is why ime questioning mcfees services. cheers mdp. t.f.k

No probs m8, a dedicated scanner will almost always find some new files that most any antivirus program misses for whatever reason(jobs for the boys perhaps?)

Even running the 3 antispyware programs(not all simultaniously mind ;) ) i`d bet i still have odds and sods tucked away somewhere, logging my tracks and trying to report home... that`s where the firewall is invaluable, a good one nowadays has a script of allowed programs to communicate with the internet and anything else is blocked by default. If your firewall pops up a warning, use google or another search engine to find out what the program says it is.

* it may be renamed tho so even then be careful*

I`ve used mcafee before as an av/firewall program and never had any major problems with it.

thanks againe mdp lol when i don a sweep with ad-aware it came up with a load of stuff about kazza which i thought i got rid of in add & remove programs, so yeah it shows you just how they hang about in your system. can you recomend a firewall that will work in conjunction with spybot & ad-aware. ore shall i just download one from google, thanks once againe mdp, for your patience t.f.k

Hmm,

I use AVG for virus killing (free)

Kerio for my firewall (free)

Lavasoft Adaware (free)

And a hardware (NAT) Firewall (£50)

Theres a nice little site here

https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2

This will (if you hit the proceed button then the all service ports) check the first 1056 ports on your system to see how secure your computer is.

*Geek*

lol

This is pretty good advice, even without the hardware firewall...

or maybe try Zonealarm as your free firewall instead :ouch:

I`d also try to use anti-spyware products as often possible, trials are freely available.

I`d becareful using kazaa or similar p2p networks, i had a look at that and limewire recently and almost every app file was a trojan around 852kb, how the fuck ppl don`t realise they are infected and remove the file from theyre pc and the network is beyond me! lol

Years back I used to PM them to say, but the sheer volume of new infected shares made the network pretty much unusable.

But life went on.. :D

IRC & Usenet have always been far better for new releases in anycase & now BT has made life a fair bit easier(tho definately not speedier).

lol

WOW so much to read and learn and understand :guitar: but it sounds like i gotta do it for my own privacy and the generall up keep of my p-c, youve deffo give me the heads up on alot of things that i was quite ignorant about ;) "limewire" i have been using this to download quite alot of sounds, and i fount it alot easier and faster than kazza, but i have been warned by a m8 that most p2p networks are dodgey?? but i do luv my sounds m8 ;) the only other thing that is bothering me tbh is all this stuff really free?? i was allways told you only get what you pay for and nothing is free, but it sounds like youve found away round it  fair play to ya. ;) i better start doin some reading man, and cheers once againe t.f.k

I thought I`d recommend SecretMaker. :!:

Requirements: Windows 98/Me/2000/XP

Seeing as it`s in the top20 most downloaded software worldwide, can`t be all that bad....

Bit of the garb....

All-in-One Secretmaker combines several tools:

Security Watchdog, Intruder Blocker, Spam Fighter, Pop-up Blocker, Banner Blocker, Movie Blocker, Privacy Protector, History Cleaners, Worm Hunter, and Cookie Eraser.

Security Watchdog recognizes malicious "mysteryware" and parasites that may assault your computer.

Intruder Blocker can protect you from spyware, trackware, and viruses.

Spam Fighter rates spam and works with any POP3 e-mail client, and the automated whitelist keeps preferred contacts up-to-date.

Banner Blocker reduces advertising banners, and Movie Blocker blocks Flash ads.

Pop-up Blocker stops unwanted pop-ups, and Privacy Protector hides your identity while you surf.

Cookie Eraser circumvents profiling.

History Cleaner clears needless files, logs, and tracks. Various whitelists allow user-specific optimizations.

Version 4.2.3 comes with an integrated Password Generator.

Is Secretmaker effective? I`d say it`s the best of it`s kind. Seven major computer magazine reviews have given Secretmaker top ratings. Several professional spammers have attempted to block the Secretmaker servers, so the program could not be downloaded. They have also written negative comments at the download site. I don`t think you can get a better review than a negative review from your adversaries!
