Hir
Its a bit of a catch 22 democracy. If we genuienly left decision to the masses we would get a load of unpallitabale results, mainly because the unwashed masses havent been eduacated to take control or authority. An oftend quoted example of this is the death penalty. If we had direct democracy and this was put to the suffarge then we would have the death penalty reinstated, a move that I think would be abhorrent to most people here. Guest Rex Mundi
In an ideal world the best two forms of government would be a benign dictatorship, one person or party with a absolute power but using that power for the good of everyone, A good example of this today is Sultan Qaboos, the present ruler of The Sultanate of Oman. He was trained at Sandhurst, and spent some time "learning the ropes" at Warwick County Council. He gained power by toppling his father in a bloodless coup, supported by the British military/government. His father had only built a few roads near his palaces for his own use, and practically nothing for his people, in all his years in power. Since taking control Sultan Qaboos has built a complete infrastructure of roads in the country, hospitals and schools everywhere, all free for his people. I would happily live in Oman today, they are wonderful people, with a fascinating culture and history, ie, Sinbad the Sailor was Omani, they were seafaring traders all the way to Hong Kong (or whatever the area was called back then).
