Rosin - when to press and storage

Hi fellow dabbers.

Have only been pressing for a few weeks now and cant seem to find the answer to my q's wrt when is it best to press the flower (in terms of time jarred) and subsequently, how best to store the rosin.

I have several varieties in jars, some have been stored for over a year, with the most recent having only just been put in jars.

In my pressing experiments, I have noticed that the older the flower, the darker and stickier the rosin with less flavour.  Whereas freshly dried flower produces a crumblier and much lighter in colour product with more flavour.....

So my question is this:

Is it better to press recently jarred flower to capture the enhanced flavour and more practical/useable texture and store the rosin long term

OR

Store the flower and press rosin as required (which from my experience, results in a sticker, darker and less flavoursome product).

To me, it would appear better to press the fresh flower to capture the flavour and more useable texture.  But I am unsure if it is appropriate to store rosin long term (by this I mean several months to potentially a year) ?  The internet has yielded much contradictory (and mostly it appears anecdotal) evidence.

Wondering what your experience has been.  Is there an optimum curing in jars period before pressing?  How do you store your rosin for months at a time?

I intend to do some experiments myself with the recently jarred Bros Grimm C99 by pressing some rosin at various cure times (e.g. press some after 1 month, and again a month later) but keen to hear your experiences also.....

For flower most press it when it’s barely dry, so 5 or 6 days after harvesting.

This produces the lightest product and preserves as much of the fresh flavour as possible. As you have found, the longer flower cures the less flavour and darker the colour of the rosin.

To store, I’d keep in an airtight jar and into the fridge if it’s going to be kept for a while. If you’re just going to consume it over the next month I’d just leave it on the side. I’d you do keep it in the fridge, leave it a few minutes to warm up to room temp after pulling it out, before opening the lid. Condensation forms in the jar otherwise, which when closing the lid will keep moisture where you don’t want it.

Have you tried hash rosin? If you like flower rosin you’ll LOVE hash rosin.

I tend to press when the stems just snap so pretty fresh. As for storage I like glass jars and leave them in a cool dark place ..

Thanks @PureSmkr and @Arthur Mix. Pretty much confirms it for me.

I better get pressing.

And hash rosin next project.  This rosin adventure has been as much fun as starting growing all those years ago.....

Just made a boot load of iso oil gummy bears. I'm consigning all solvent based extracts to edibles now as I can't remove the solvents to my satisfaction. So with my rosin, it's a win win.....

Some rosin porn from some freshly pressed BG C99. Dried over 10 days, paper bag for a couple and then started pressing.

large.IMG_20201012_152038690_HDR.jpg

From bottom:

Fresh off press;

1day old and just left in container with lid off. Slightly drier and crumblier texture;

After pressing and collection, placed glass container with lid on on top pressing plates when switched off for 10 m. Then stirred and placed back for 5 m. Then stirred and left for 2 further m;

After pressing, played with and twisted and rolled for 5 mins. Became more greasy in texture.

All the above based on snippets found on web and are not based on experience etc. Just me playing around.

If anyone has any thoughts on curing or experimenting etc let me know.... I am keen to play. Have plenty of material

Pressing details:

All presses at 90c at 3.5t for 2m using 90micron bags.

6g in using bottle tech. 1.5g out resulting in 25% return (I think this girl is generous!).

Quite floral when vaped. Easy on throat. Good hit. Wife complaining of smell. Win all round then....

Loving it!

Please can you or someone explain how or where I can get the right waxpen to vape rosin straight?

You want something with a bucket so the oil/wax doesn't come into contact with the heating element and can be swabbed out with a cotton bud after each use like the Divine Tribe QQV4, HVT Sai, motar, crystal, quarta, incendio ..... or a nectar collector style thing like the Headbanger or Terp pen ... or one of those all in 1 e-rig things like the Peak, Carta, switch, oura .....

The Rio is surprisingly popular (to me at least) considering it's just a mini bubbler with a banger and a lighter built into a stand lol but it does tell us something, I think, when people are saying they prefer it to all the electronical wizardry. If that's the case you may just as well pick up a cheap mini bubbler, banger, carb cap and torch instead.

As per @Hippie on hill

I'm currently using the hvt sequoia, similar but bigger than the sai. With water cooling it's sublime haha....

Have got the latest AVS M22 with escc bucket on its way. Quite excited..... All about the flavour....

@Dailydabber have a look for recommended vape solutions on the web who specialise in this sort of tech or uk420 sponsor vapefiend. Matt the owner of rvs is v helpful and their website is quite a good introduction into the world of portable dabbing. Good luck mate. It's been a ride....

Thanks. I just don't get what else is needed. Surely that atomiser hooks onto a pen or something?

So say I buy the sequinoa thing for £55,what else do I need?

Clueless lol

Thanks. What do u recommend for best performance out of the electric wizards? And for someone who has never used a vape pen, how do I learn what to do with these atomisers?

If you buy a 510 sequoia etc you will need a power mod with batteries , ideally two batteries inside if 18650 type . You may want me with temp control or just figure out the volts etc from forums that show sequoia stuff..

There's loads of YouTube vids n stuff with reviews and usage instructions but they all fall into a couple of categories really, for me, bucket/no bucket (coil in contact with the concentrate) and temp control/power control.

If the concentrate is in contact with the coil it's gonna scorch and cake up the coil over time, making it taste more and more burnt until you whoop up the power and burn it off and blow away the ash but they never quite clean up all the way.

Power control (or wattage mode) is when you set the power level to be delivered by the mod when you press the button, like a dimmer switch, so when you press the button it keeps getting hotter. You can try and adjust the power being delivered to match the power required but temp control is better.

I have lots of battery box mods and 18650 batteries for my filthy ecig habit already so I was waiting for something like the Divine Tribe QQV4 (temp controlled bucket) to be released and picked up their bottomless banger, carb cap and extension lead later, after being impressed by the performance of the stock setup.

The HVT Sai and Sequoia, and the AVS M22 are all pretty similar things tho

I would go for a dual battery box mod that you can install the Acrtic Fox or Red Panda custom firmware on, here's their manual and compatibility list https://docs.google.com/document/u/0/d/1uF5xCzg-8LqbiCwom5oKJWhIBnt7COsrCWytwYN5Yfk/mobilebasic

A lot of the devices on the list are out of production and hard to find now so my shortlist would be RXG3 dual, Espion and Ravage that take 2 batteries, or if you only want a smaller single battery mod there's the P80  .

I would also pick up a charger and some spare batteries so you can carry spare batteries or have a set on charge and a set in use so you don't have to wait and not have to rely on the box mod to charge them.

The avs M22 is the only true temp controlled bucket from my understanding. The bucket is the heater coil as opposed to being heated by a ceramic plate below. This results in much more accurate TC.

I have just received mine and even on wattage mode (the current escc buckets only work on wattage. TC version on its way as they had run out of stock), the M22 is considerably better than the sequoia in my view.

On line view is it is also better than the DT v4 but I can't verify that myself.

It is v smooth without water. It's expensive but I'm already a convert and the sequoia is now a spare.....

But as you have already expressed  concerns about sic you might want to look at alternatives to the m22

I've mentioned recommend vape supplies before and their website covers all this in detail. Their mods have artic fox pre installed and set up for the various atomisers they sell. Matt is also v informative.
