New grower looking for any help, tips and advice

Hi fellow growers! Apologies if I have posted this in wrong bored as I'm new here.

 

During this lockdown I have decided to grow my own auto flowers to keep me occupied. I am growing in a tomato green house outside and will be planting in a 11litre pot once germinated in light biobizz soil mixed with 30% Perlite. The seeds I will be planting are called Think Different by Dutch Passion as I have read that they tend to do well in UK climates. Below I have listed all the nutes and extras I have acquired to grow my plants..

 

1.General Hydroponics Flora, Grow and Micro

 

2. Plant Magic Evolution Spray

 

3. Plant Magic Bio Silicon

 

Is there anything else I may need or may be of help?

 

I will be leaving to stand 24hours prior to each water before bringing my PH levels to 6.5 to help evaporate any chlorine etc.

 

I am posting on here for any tips and advice as I cant seem to find any direct answers as to what I wish to know. 1st thing is how often should I water my plants? Every 2 days? and 2nd question is when should I start feeding each different nute and how often? Also dosage recommendations as I have seen people suggest using only half or less than half the amount stated on the bottle. I only plan on growing one plant to start off with as a tester before I go planting all my other seeds.

No idea on the nutes side of thing I know you can buy.organic top amendments that u.add every two week might be wrong I have two autos in the back garden ready to pop through the soil can't wait experimenting is problem the best way to go nothing to much am running two shd auto sound lovely good luck mate

In terms of watering; I water when the plant pot is light when picked up and I don’t water if the pot feels heavy or average. How many days it is between watering a depends of environmental factors out of your control and age of plant so I don’t make any firm frequency plans because there is no point.

 

Good to remove chlorine, no need to measure pH imo

 

Regarding nutes, no need for specialist canna nutes imo
 

A staggered grow is a good idea if you’d like to learn from your mistakes (the best way).

 

My main advice based on your description is not to over complicate it. Your biggest chance of failure will likely be over thinking it and giving them too much of something.

 

I do autos in greenhouses and specifically do the following:

 

Seed in a light mix (like yours) in a 5” jiffy peat pot (ideally it will be a genuine peat based ‘jiffy’ brand)

Lightly water with water but preferably rain water.

After 7-14 days when roots start to show through the pot I drop whole pot into a 10 litre fabric pot with a similarly light peat and coco coir based mix.

Further watering take place only when the pot is light and never before (this requires a strong will).

Occasionally feed with correctly diluted organic liquid tomato type fertiliser and/or seaweed stuff.

Let the plant go outside of the greenhouse on fair weather days as often as possible and especially on hot days when greenhouses can get too hot.

Harvest when ready

Thanks for your responses everyone I really appreciate it. Ive decided to switch my nutes from General Hydroponics to biobizz as I would prefer to grow organically so instead I will be using bio grow, bloom and top max and root juice. I've also read it is harder to over feed with these nutes and less likely to cause burn if I do, however I am very aware that less is more so I will be extremely cautious when it comes to feeding. I think my main concern is fully establishing what stage my plant is at and giving the wrong nutes at the wrong time either to early or to late

It sounds like you just keep your grow as basic as possible and still get amazing results? Do you try to just grow in your chosen medium with water alone unless your plant shows signs of needing some sort of nutes but if you can get away without feeding any you try to? What time is the best time to start my plant? I read a month before the summer solstice is good which is around the end of may

@BigBudz2020 Good luck mate, all the best with your grow. Just started mine a few days ago, then plan to stagger them out till about the end of May as you say. No expert, on my first grow just read this is what many people do if you got a good few seeds. I'm sure the more experienced will give you some advice.

@Oliffe those are some lovely plants you got there. Good to see what is achievable with those fabric pots, got the same with mine, not sure they'll look quite like yours though

Not amazing @BigBudz2020 but enough for what I need but thanks anyway for the compliment.

Yes, simple is best but a lot of thought goes into being simple, and a lot of restraint is needed to resist all of the marketing that goes into canna nutrients and growing medium.

I probably feed every watering but keep the levels lower than most

Ideal time to plant is subjective but leaving until mid-May is my preference which sounds similar to your thoughts

 

First time I grew an auto I got a teenth of shite. Second time a qtr of something a little more respectable and so on .....so best way is to learn as you go. Good luck!

Hi guys, quick update, my seedling has sprouted and broken the soil it's only day 2 but it's looking healthy, I will be transplanting into final pot between 1 & 2 weeks, when i transplant would it be useful to add a small dose of root juice and fish mix to help stimulate the roots? Thanks in advance

Good choice on the biobizz, part of the attraction of growing your own to me is knowing it hasn't had any dodgy unnecessary nutes, I use seaweed, a organic tomato fertilizer and biobizz bloom and fbb and salt of potsash outside . As others have said no need to adjust PH in soil and personally I just use tap water straight from the tap, I think a lot of people leave water for the chlorine to evaporate though. Get a good wet dry cycle going on, you quickly get used to lifting the pot to see how dry they are.

I have biobizz fish mix, grow, bloom, root juice and some alg-a-mag aswell as some plant magic bio silicon and plant magic evolution spray just unsure whether or not to add some nutes after transplanting to help the roots settle in more easy as I know alg-a-mag states that it helps with stress after situations such as transplanting aswell as over feeding etc. Just want to be sure my plant has the best start after being transplanted

I like to keep things simple and don't like to use much but each to their own, have a read up of diaries and stuff, there is loads of really good info on this site. I use sea weed when I transplant for stress, i'm sure I read somewhere it helps.
