Guest Blabblabberbab
Before I go any further YES I know PC fans are crap, I am saving pennies for the big td-160 in the sky but til then.... just come across a load of PC fans (serves me right for watching porn at my computer! - ahem.) I digress.... I've got 7 fans wired together with a snipped phone charger (MY old one this time after I accidentally snipped my girlfriends charger thinking it was an old one... ) but need a 12V transformer doohingy as this one only punts out 7V. What I need to know is do I get this one : http://www.maplin.co.uk/products/module.as...08&moduleno=226 or this one: http://www.maplin.co.uk/products/module.as...08&moduleno=227 the difference is the 1st is just about right spec wise but as I have so many fans should I get the latter which seems to pump out more juice???? crap with voltages, watts amps etc so any help would be appreciated like a satisfying poo after a guinness session! thanks in advance guys and yes I know I wouldn't have this trouble if I just had a DECENT IN-LINE FAN!!!! I WILL I WIll I Will I Will.... ta BLab
Themadhippy
do you know the current or power rating of the fan? the smaller unit will power 7 fans with a max rating of 42ma (0.042 amps) or 0.5watts each, the larger one will give you 114 ma (0.114 A) or 1.37 watts per fan.personally for the sake of £2 id go for the larger model Edited June 3, 2004 by Themadhippy
Guest Blabblabberbab
Thanks TMH.... have 2 of these 120mm: http://www.evercool.com.tw/products/fan_1202.htm (it's the second one down the table with 79.14 CFM airflow) and 5 more generic 80mm.... not sure specs for these. I'm dead interested in learning everything about everything so the more info. you can give me the better! input...INPUT!! thanks again mate, neeed to get this sorted at the weekend - it's been loads of fun tinkering in my box (ooeer missus!) thanks again m8! DaLata
Get an old PC power supply to do the job. Car boot/market or if you've got any geeky mates they'll probably have an old case kicking about so you can get them for free. the most you'll have to do to it is short a couple of pins and it'll handle your fans easily. Run the fans on 5v for slow or 12v for fast'n'furious!
Themadhippy
(it's the second one down the table with 79.14 CFM airflow) thats 0.34 amps each,or 340 milliamps (1 milliamp=1000th of an amp) ,2 of those is 0.68 amps or 680milliamps,leaving 120 ma,or 24 ma per fan,.just had a quick browse around and 80ma fans avarage artound 50-60 milliamp,so youll nead a power supply able to handle around 1A (1000ma),maybe cheaper to use an old computer power supply, but i seem to recall you have to link 2 pins to get some models working
Guest Blabblabberbab
Cool - tried that.... not sure if it was power supply not working (sure it was fine) or what but it didn't work. One of my techy mates assured me that it wouldn't work without a motherboard for switch-on but did'nt know how to short the pins. Any idea how you'd go about making them work....???? mucho ta BLab. Guest Blabblabberbab
oops! Bloody lag, didn't see the other post I'll have to pick this up again in a bit, just off home from "work".... ta ta B.
Themadhippy
Any idea how you'd go about making them work according to this place for an atx power supply you need to link pins 14 and 15 together,
Guest Blabblabberbab
Thanks guys, that's loads of help! - I'll have a fiddle with my power supply and see if I can get it going. If not.... 2 questions, 1) From what I can work out above, If I do get the larger transformer and just run the 2 x 120mm fans they'll run as fast as possible without slow down. that right? hope so....! 2) If I have 4 (sorry not 5 ) 80mm fans running with the 2 bigger fans, will it actually slow things down that much or should I stop being so stupid and live with it?! many thanks, UK420 to the rescue again! ta ta Blab. Themadhippy
the llarge fans will run fine on the larger power supply, adding 4 smaller fans may not cause any problems, maybe reduce the speed a bit.The thermal overload should prevent it packing up totally if you try drawing to much current from it so at worst your fan will keep starting and stopping
Guest Blabblabberbab
Cool - I've got my PC Power supply working now so hopefully no need to buy anything else (saved pennies straight into td 160 fund....) There's more than enough sockets to easily connect up all the fans with minimum fuss. nice. Well, you learn something new every day - so the saying goes. no shit! ta ta Blab. Guest Blabblabberbab
Run the fans on 5v for slow or 12v for fast'n'furious How do you do this? I'm hoping that when I plug it all in with the connectors it'll all run at 12V straight away - this right???? or do I have to just connect to the yellow and black wires for definate 12V ta B. Themadhippy
for 12volts connect the fans to any of the commons and any of the 12v outputs, for a slight speed reduction you could try conecting the fans between pins 18 and 19,this will give you 10 volts, and between any of the commons and any of the 5volt out puts for 5 volts,it maybe possible to get 7 volts by conecting the fan between a 5 volt and 12 volt output. Guest Blabblabberbab
Ummmm.... that's a little different than I expected. I thought I'd just be able to plug the 4pin (molex?) connectors coming from the power supply straight into the corresponding 4 pin connectors supplied with the fans.... no dice? I mean for a 12V output.... Edited June 4, 2004 by Blabblabberbab
