This homeless guy asked me for money the other day.

I was about to give it to him and then I thought he was going to use it on drugs or alcohol.

And then I thought, that's what I'm going to use it on.

Why am I judging this poor bastard.

Sheriff John Brown always hated me

For what I don't know

Ev'ry time I plant a seed

He said, "Kill it before it grows."

He said, "Kill them before they grow." :smoke:

Add on: P.A.I.N and Howard Marks - Grow More Weed

Yea, but taking Bob's lyrics for what's written on the paper is like translating chinese into english - it doesn't work!

I thought it was about how black people always get more time in prison. John Brown is a white sheriff and his deputy (called 'Brother' i think, at one point), he didn't 'shoot'. The seed thing bit is about how everytime black people try to rise against the oppression, they are killed before they get a chance to succeed.

What you reckon?

What you reckon?
I asked Bob about this - I just got him off the phone! - and he said (something like) 'the ambiguity of my lyrics gives them universal meaning and leaves my songs open to the interpretation of those with ears to hear. This song concerns a marijuana farmer pursued by the local sheriff, who seems to have a vendetta against him, but the seed he plants could equally well refer to the germination of Rasta consciousness as to an actual herb stalk. And, of course, prejudice and oppression; justice, innocence and defiance are the context of all my songs for the sufferers...'

So there you have it from the Lion's mouth. Let's see what Eric Clapton makes of it.
