New Study Suggests Cannabis May Be Used to Treat Rheumatoid Arthritis

Is cannabis the answer to the pains and aches of RA?

A.J. HerringtonApril 16, 2019

Cannabis may be an effective treatment for rheumatoid arthritis, according to a new study published in the journal Current Opinion in Rheumatology. Researchers, who noted that “an increasing number of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are using cannabis to treat their symptoms,” wrote that “cannabinoids could be a suitable treatment for RA” and called for further study into the anti-inflammatory properties of CBD.

Dr. Benjamin Caplan, a family physician and cannabis specialist, told Forbes that he has helped thousands of seniors use cannabinoid therapies to treat arthritis.

“I have patients with mild joint pain that can be satisfactorily addressed with a topical cannabis treatment,” Caplan said. “Others are nearly incapacitated, taking multiple medications for incomplete relief, and welcome any additional option that will help them cope with the pain and anxiety associated with their condition, and improve their quality of life.”

Caplan said that researchers were only beginning to learn how cannabis is able to relieve pain safely and effectively.

“We don’t quite understand the all the details of how it works, but we do know that cannabis is a powerful anti-inflammatory agent, and that it operates in a different way than other anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen, steroids, or even the biological options available for treating RA and other autoimmune diseases,” he said. “These traditional drug treatments can cause severe side-effects, many of which we do not see with cannabis.”

Cannabis Presents New Options in Health Care

Caplan said that the variety of cannabis products, dosages, and methods of ingestion available make cannabis an attractive option for some patients, noting that “one of the nice things about cannabis is that the wide range of choices at reputable dispensaries creates a lot of opportunity for flexibility and success for many different types of people with a wide range of ailments.”

“Fortunately, all of these options and opportunities for flexibility rest on cannabis’ high safety profile,” he added. “From this foundation of safety, armed with education, the potential benefits to patients often outweigh the risks.”

The doctor said that he believes that many patients are longing for new alternatives to effectively treat their health care challenges naturally.

“We are stuck in a paternalistic medical system that is dehumanizing people,” said Caplan. “We have a broken medical system that strips patients of autonomy and power over their own illness, and that in and of itself is unhealthy. We all know it, but it has been a very difficult thing to fix. Healing with cannabis does not follow a traditional model, where a physician authority decides what the right choice is for a patient. Instead it’s a process undertaken by the patient with the physician’s guidance.”

As hopeful as I am, I have yet to find myself or anyone else (Inc old-timer here) who can identify true anti inflammatory properties .

I sincerely hope to be proven wrong

No, I've never made topicals . Don't suppose you've an easy to follow recipe? I'm guessing it's coconut based?

Nice tip mate , thank you

:yinyang:

Decarb 7-14g of weed. Add to slow cooker with coconut oil for an hour or two. Add essential oil for scent

Easy peasy.

The weed used was already that ratio but you can add cbd isolate

i make cream from bud and trim that gets given to people with arthritis and it works.

the last person was an old ex bricky that has bad hands i gave some to his wife (bad knees) and him, told him how to apply

2 days later he turns up where im working and shakes my hands because he's been able to do stuff with his hands and he's pain free..

mrs twigs uses it on her arthritic hands and was saying just this evening her knuckle lumps have gone down and are not clicking as much (less pain)

i use it on my ol'broken back .. and it works

i dont know what to say to people that it doesn't work for.. :(  i've given it to many people and it works..

i use to @buddy13 mate :stoned: but i stopped because i did'nt really get on with it,  i was probably not using it correctly, used it for a couple of runs then gave up on it lol

coconut on its own is absorbed quickly into the skin and you can put it in coffee :)

im sure other people use it though because there are recipes with it in.. should probably revisit it, i had problems with it in the fridge, it went to hard i think, don't like the idea of eating it either..

okay, you're using bud/trim  in coconut oil, but I want to try making some effective cream using rosin... I just need to think of mix dosage now and how to do it well, I've never thought about it before, any information fully appreciated. :)

hi mate :stoned:  you could heat the coconut oil and stick in the rosin and mix it around a bit.?

if you did it bain-marie style, you could use the coconut jar you bought (maybe take a scoop out to make it easier to stir) and not need to add water, just add the rosin, mix it, let it blend for a while, let it cool and your away to go :stoned:   (saying that, the last bud batch i did i decarbed and chucked 2 jars of coconut oil and the bud straight into the slow cooker on low with no water and all was fine, you just don't want it to get to hot is all)

what temp was the rosin made? i guess its decarbed already? so you only need to make sure it's well blended/melted into the oil, to be safe though blend for maybe an hour?

I've limited all my presses to 195F, I get (pressing 10g) the first gram or so dripping down, but I leave it for perhaps 20 minutes before recovering the rosin off the paper, so I'm guessing that the later stuff, another gram (my last press was 22% :) ) is decarbed... I'm still new to this so please correct me, I want to get this right.

But to be sure, I'm happy to decarb anyway.

I think I need to buy me a slow cooker.... I need one to cook more food for myself so that is a double bonus, I might as well use it to make veggie soups and stuff. :)

Back to subject, what ratio should I mix the rosin in to the coconut oil to be beneficial? For example, 25g rosin, how much coconut oil is best?

lol how strong do you like it cowboy  :cowboy:

never made it wit rosin, its a suck it and see moment im afraid mate .. i was thinking maybe try 14g of rosin in 500ml of coconut oil? then if its not strong enough you could remelt and stick the rest in :stoned: or just chuck it all in the 500ml, have half a teaspoon in your morning coffee and see what happens lol

0.05ml'ish of rosin per ml is it?

think i used about 4-5?oz of trim/bud to 500ml in my last run and it effective.. what would you get from 4-5 oz rosin wise?

just read some old stuff, and i forgot some people also add lecithin, never done it myself but its supposed to aid the blending and increase potency.

quite a few people do it..
