goldie_2007 Posted March 23, 2017 Share Posted March 23, 2017 Staff have the benefit of being allowed to access wifi at work, i want to browse uk420 but am conscious of http requests being logged and possibly monitored. I don't want to have this privelage taken away from my comrades due to my usage......so is there something i can do to hide my traffic to uk420 or is it better to stay off here whilst I'm using works wifi? 2 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I use a VPN for almost all my internet traffic now, since the new laws came out that allow the government, local council and dozens of other institutions to look which websites you visit. All your employer will see is an encrypted connection to a server in your chosen country. Auxin Posted March 24, 2017 Share Posted March 24, 2017 VPN is a good shout... especially if you're using an iphone. Your privacy will depend on what you're using to browse the internet. If you're using a work laptop then I wouldn't bother unless you can install TOR browser on it. You'll probably need admin rights to do that. If you are using a personal (android) mobile/tablet then the Orbot app with a compatible browser will hide everything from a work server. Be careful though... Once said wifi password is used, your devices ip address is stored by system administration as is all the Internet history related to that wifi connection/device? Simple answer is don't use work wifi. The devices MAC address will indeed be stored on their side. But the VPN client will create a new local IP on the device and then all internet traffic is encrypted and passed to the VPN endpoint. So yeah, you will still use their internet connection and they'll be able to see that you're using a VPN, but all the traffic will be encrypted and therefore pretty useless to them. 2 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

All you traffic / search history is coming from the vpn IP i.e. The vpn owner knows what you are doing / looking at, not the network you are directly connected to. Would the IT department, armed with a mac address and the knowledge that a device has been using VPN to connect to unknown websites be enough to start an internal investigation? Guest Posted March 24, 2017 Share Posted March 24, 2017 I very much doubt it. Some may not like the fact you are using a vpn as they can't monitor you. May even be specific exclusions in t&c's to not use vpn etc. As to you reasons for using one, well that's harder to justify privacy to surf what you want prob won't got down too well! Police aren't going to do Jack though. Most vpn orgs hosted in countries where not so easy to access records etc. So you are already going to be screwed imo if they are able to get a warrant to force them to release your browising history.
