Windows 10 Updates - Disabling

As someone who has worked in the field of network security, I understand the risk of leaving unpatched holes in software. But despite this I have decided that enough is enough regarding the way that Windows 10 gets its' updates by default. It can be really infuriating to have to wait for a scheduled update to complete, but when it is an unscheduled update it can be dangerous to people with bad health (I'm not joking!) to have to deal with the process when it randomly decides to occur (random to the user, maybe not to MS). This morning I have wasted almost half a day with this stuff, when I had a gazillion other things to do. I had steam coming out of my ears, as I do every single time it happens.

The results of the auto-updates of the w10 OS, are that video's no longer played in my Chrome browser, my Discord chat server application also refused to start, and the only thing to fix it was to allow the Nvidia drivers to also be updated. So, you can see that there is usually a knock on effect of updating the W10 OS, and if you haven't scheduled this to happen WHEN YOU HAVE TIME, you can be stuck computerless, for hours and hours (and that's if you have technical know how).

So, this time I decided to disable the auto update, because I need to be in charge of this stuff, and prepare everything accordingly. I have now scheduled a regular monthly update, using Outlook calendar, and I will face the consequences of any infections due to unpatched holes in W10. I just can't let it do that again.

I already have a really good data backup to cloud plan, which I will rely on as a way to fully restore all of my own personal files, if I need it.

If you understand the consequences of not automatically patching W10 regularly, then please use the instructions available at the link below:

I am not a Windows specialist but I will try and answer any questions about this. Hopefully enough W10 users will find this helpful.

Windows 10 is nasty.....latest is it won't allow my laptop to connect to the internet. I contacted my internet provider who blamed the problen on W10. They tried to walk me through changing W10 to over-write this....but my little chemo brain couldn't cope with typing long code into command prompt. I've nearly tossed the laptop out the door because it's useless to me without internet.

It's unreal that MS have actually managed to maneuver the public into an operating system entirely dependent on the internet and a connection to MS. Never mind the gov snooping on you, Gates is doing it already!
