A new plan aimed at halting drug mules bound for Britain before they can board the plane is being signed by the Government and Jamaica.

Police in Jamaica will use scanning equipment to target couriers using the route estimated to account for half the crack cocaine in Britain.

UK Customs officers have given technical assistance to help them detect traffickers - often teenage girls - who swallow the drug to get it through normal checks.

Customs Minister Paul Boateng Is to announce details of a three-pronged attack on the cocaine trade and the new system will start next month.

In January, Phil Sinkinson, deputy high commissioner in Jamaica, claimed one in 10 passengers leaving for Britain was a drug mule.

As much as 30kg (66lb) of cocaine was being smuggled on every flight, he said.

Passengers were carrying the drugs in plastic bags, or condoms, which they had swallowed.

The number of visitors from the Caribbean has nearly tripled in the last decade, with 1.7 million journeys between there and Britain made last year.
