The Government insisted its war on drugs was working after figures showed the amount of hard drugs seized during 2000 rose 10%.

Police and Customs officers beat the target set for seizures, while the number of people dealt with for supplying class A drugs also rose by a quarter.

Drugs minister Bob Ainsworth says: "By targeting our resources on the most harmful drugs, we have been effective in disrupting the supply of class A drugs across the country."
