A British man has been jailed for six years in Thailand for possession of methamphetamine tablets.

Kevin Quill, from Bradford, was arrested more than 18 months ago in the resort of Pattaya.

Police say they seized 100 methamphetamine tablets and 1,700 packets of black market cigarettes from the 39-year-old.

Officers said Quill was placed under surveillance after he raised suspicion by making frequent short trips to Bangkok and Pattaya, during which he spent large amounts of money. He was arrested on October 11, 2000.

The British Embassy official said a court in Pattaya had jailed Quill for six years, but he was unsure of the exact charges on which he was convicted.

Police said shortly after Quill's arrest that, if found guilty of possessing methamphetamine, he faced up to 10 years in prison.

Possessing black market cigarettes would normally be punished with a fine, but it was not clear if he was also charged with that offence.
