A notorious criminal caught with drugs worth nearly £100,000 has been jailed for four years.

Spencer Mellors, 44, who was dubbed "Hannibal the Cannibal", was stopped by police on January 28 in Easterhouse, Glasgow.

One officer detected a strong smell of cannabis coming from the car.

They found £37,500 of dope in the boot. Mellors tried to give police a false name, but it was noticed he had "Spencer"

tattooed on his arm.

A subsequent search of the home Mellors shared with his mother in Netherhouse Place, also Easterhouse, recovered a haul of cocaine valued at £60,000.

The court heard Mellors had been asked to watch the bag containing the cocaine by a local dealer and the car also belonged to the man.

A judge at the High Court in Edinburgh told Mellors the police had come upon him by chance and were not acting on criminal intelligence.

Lord Mackay said he could take those circumstances into account, despite Mellors "very significant criminal record".

In 1996 Mellors was jailed for nine years for raping a prostitute, which led to him being nicknamed "Hannibal" after he bit his victim's face.

Mellors was later awarded £4000 in damages by European judges after they decided a delay in hearing his subsequent appeal breached his human rights.
