hi all. i'm on my first grow and i've decided to grow organic. have a m8 who grows with loads of chemicals and was a bit dismissive of the whole organic thing. anyway i'm a bit of a hippy an chemicals aint my thing.my plants have just gone onto 12/12 and everything is looking good. up until this point i've been feeding them with teas made from nettles, wormcasts etc. during flower tho i`m gonna need more P and K, am i being naive to think i can take my babies to harvest with a good yield and good potency using stuff i`ve made myself rather than shop bought nutes. i'm tryin to prove to my mate that you can think a bit differently and its a bit of an experiment for me. am i dreamin?
been reading about sources of nutes from wood ash, molasses, dock leaves and other stuff.
read some great stuff on here about this and will continue to do so but any comments, criticisms are welcome
cheers
solarchild
oh yeah, made a carbon filter i got from a design on here and that well pissed on my mates chips. cheers. cant remember off the top of my head whose it was, but it works a treat.
cant beat it when something you make actually works.just need a mad crop now

eta........Sussed it, cheers Booj.

Link doesn't work......

cheers mate. yup molasses is gettin used. seems to have a few benifits such as a bit of P and K and increasing quality of the soil amongst others.
good link.
if horticulture companies can get away with overpricing a by-product it cant be bad.

Ingredients for homemade liquid fertilisers, are comfrey, nettles, alfalfa meal and mares tail to name a few sources from vegetation.

The liquid produced by worm farms.

Things you can buy like dried blood, hoof and horn, bonemeal, rock phosphate, Vinasse etc.

A bit about comfrey by me by me!
solarchild
cheers OT.
bin using nettle brew while the plants are in veg and they look great. my worm farm has bin up and running for a while now. the liquid that is collected goes on my outside plants (toms etc) i add the wormcast to my nettle tea and use that for the indoor plants cos there seems to be a good few little nasties( or goodies, i dont know) in the run off liquid. not got any comfrey yet but watch this space.
collected some dock and dandelion leaves this morning and am gonna use those. i also add a little molasses to the teas. thinking of using some wood ash but i need a little more time to research that. I'm trying not to buy anything off the shelf as a little experiment but if things dont go great then i think the next grow will have some of the items you mentioned- blood, bone meal etc..

i like the idea of using stuff from the garden to grow other things. cant beat sustainable (and cheap) growin read quite a lot on this site (much of it by you ot1 and i think i have learnt a lot although in a very basic way.
this grow is more of a learning experience and i hope to take the next one to the next level.
is there anything critical i need to avoid doing. i'm trying not to be lazy and am doing the reading but if theres anything anyone would like to share on this subject i'd be grateful.

heres a little bit of info i found if anybodies interested. there seems to be a few plants that are rich in everything such as comfrey, alfalfa, dandelion etc.
sorry its a bit long

I think this is an ace idea ,personally I use the waste from my fishtank , the bacteria in the filter turns the fish waste into nitrate , I wander if potatoe peel is any good ? I think I read somewhere that spuds have potassium ,but I may be wrong
making nettle brew makes perfect sense ,in theory all the stuff the nettles used to grow should be in the brew .I reckon nutes are overpriced anyhow

Got this one bookmarked - I started up a compost bin a few months ago - rabbit poo and hay/sawdust bedding being a major source, but with enough greens added. I was delighted when it started to heat up the other week... I have since turned it and at the weekend I went and grabbed a couple of bags of manure infested with brandlings/tiger worms.. so I started up a worm bin with a 1000 or so and added the rest of the manure and worms to the compost bin where I hope they get stuck into the rest of the heap.

I have always wondered about making my own organic ferts - I was contemplating getting involved in a farming project in Africa once with some hydro aspects in polytunnels but never got any further than wondering how you test for NPK and other mineral/trace elements etc... is there a DIY way of doing that or is it more of an intuitive thing?

If anyone wants instructions on making a worm bin - let me know smile.gif

still making and usin em, its a bit intuative for me- by which i mean its all a bit georges marvelous medicine. 3 weeks in flower using all sorts from bananas to wood ash. nearly bottled it and bought some nutes. kept at it tho and everthing looks tickety boo! compared progress with some of the grow diaries. if the bud comes out good i`m gonna do it again but a bit more empircaly. grow room smells of weed and banana. nice.

sorry bout spellin. just got given a bit of squidgy black. not seen some of that since 1997. smashin! stoned.gif

back again! well the plants got cropped and have been drying for a week. had a few different people and asked them what they thought. (told em i got it off a mate wink.gif ) anyway, the consensus is that its some of the best they've ever smoked (bearing in mind its not bin drying long enough). some of em bin smokin a long time too. now admitedly these guys have probably bin on the dealer weed for a bit, but still- fuckin result? w00t.gif now i made a lot of mistakes and i probably cropped a week to early (i know, i must learn patience) but its some of the best weed i've smoked too! but i think i'm biased cos i loved them plants! cry.gif The feelin i get is that growing with no chemicals or shop bought nutes can be done but the overall yield was not as good as it could have been. having said that the quality is great considering i'm a newb and fucked up a number of times.
the fact that everything to do with those little buds was made by me makes it oh so good. boiling up bananas and making nettle teas is bizarely a good way to unwind (especialy when its gonna provide a better way to unwind!). On a side note my veg that i'm also growin in pots (gotta get mesen a garden) are looking great as well!
i should imagine in a few years i'll look back and think what a shit crop but hey, its my first and i'm like a proud dad! biggrin.gif

the next grow is on the go now. gonna re-pot tom and been making up the mix today. my worm bin has delivered, so has my sisters rabbit and i found myself a shit load of comfrey growing near me. so hopefully i can learn from the last gro and be bigger and better next time! hopefully this grow or the next i can get my shit together, get a camera and do a diary. hopefully play with the big boys!

anyway cheers 420. i've learnt a lot smoke.gif
Troubled Mind
Thats great to hear man, Im actually pretty impressed that you managed to make your own ferts on your first grow and let it be a success biggrin.gif

So, you decided what strain your going to grow next? Or are you gona stick with the same one? ( What was the strain anyway? )
pete3867
that,s great news sc , it,s nice to know where everything came from innit.. well grown
solarchild
cheers fellas. grew 3 armageddon and one blueberry. gonna try total bluberry this time. the weed is great but the yield was low so i'm gonna try a more conntroled grow with more plants and fewer buds. was a bit nervous about pruning and ended up with a lot of liccle buds. gonna try for more big uns this time! got 18 little clones about 9" high and am gonna put em into flower at the weekend. gonna stick with the home made ferts cos it wasnt that much of a ball ache and like pete says its nice knowing what went in em. hoping that my growin methods other than what i feed em will give me more this time cos i certainly aint gonna be curing any off the last batch! stoned.gif

Could you use pulped aloe vera straight off the plant and water in a foliar spray to supply Mg, as it's in the big list? Aloe Vera is meant to be a laxative and so is Epsom Salts.

Would there be any other benefit from spraying it?

Me neither. You know you've asked a tough one when, the next time you search for it, Google brings back your original request!

That must be true, lol.gif.
