Hi gerrit welcome to UK420,

I'm currently growing your exile strain, I put 4 plants into flower 2 of which went extremely hermaphrodite from the outset and a 3rd is now showing signs of possible male flowers, I'm just wondering if this is a known problem with this strain or whether I just got a bad batch or something, the seeds were a few years old but I'd be surprised if this was the cause . I've grown a lot of different varieties of weed in the past few years both regular and feminised and I've never seen this percentage of hermaphrodite plants before ( except for DP's blueberry and I was expecting that) , any advice or information about this strain would be appreciated as I've looked and not found much and it does look like an interesting variety.

Hello Lizzard,

That does not sound good, I've found the odd "late flower banana" but never more than maybe 1 out of 20 and in one case some male flowers forming from old female pre-flowers at the bottom part of the plant.
So if there is no reason to suspect an environmental cause, it might be just a case of (extremely) bad luck.

I would appreciate it if you could keep me informed about the other 2, if they turn hermy too there must be something wrong with them.
Also, if you could give me the batch No. from the seeds I could tell you exactly how old they are.

Lastly, could you post a picture of them so I can see what you mean with "extremely hermaphrodite", thanks in advance.

Gerrit

Lizard
thanks for the response, unfortunately it's a little too late to get pictures of the hermaphrodite plants as they are now dead and composting pinch.gif .

In the end the 3rd one was also hermaphrodite, by extemely hermaphrodite I mean approx 50/50 male to female flower ratio right from the start of flowering, I would be surprised if environmental factors were to blame as I have other plants growing alongside these that have shown no signs of hermaphroditism, the one plant that is true female has shown no signs at all of any male flowers at all which is encouraging - aslong as she clones easily I won't be disapointed smile.gif .

I've attached an image of the packaging and seeds just prior to germination, there is also a number written on the inside of the label - 154 .

thanks again for the response I will keep you informed about the progress of the final plant .
Gerrit
Hello Lizzard,

Thanks for the explanation and picture, no doubt you have the original seeds.
I hope that the remaining female makes up for all the trouble with the hermaphrodites.
I wish I had a proper explanation for those, but the simple fact is that I don't.
I could blame it on the age of the seeds but don't really believe that is the cause.
So far nobody else reported this problem so I'm left with the "real bad luck" explanation.

Hi Gerrit,

I thought you might appreciate a quick update on the remaining female plant, I'm pleased to report that she is looking a real beauty the buds are still quite small and have a long way to go yet but she's already looking quite frosty , I'll give it a few more weeks to let the buds fatten up a bit and then I'll post some pictures .

There's been no sign of any male flowers whatsoever and this plant appears to be 100% female and a good looking one at that. thumbsup.gif

I've taken some cuttings, do you know if this strain is easy to clone ?
Gerrit
Hi Lizard,

Good to hear your remaining plant is doing much better.
Yes the Exile is easy to clone and to maintain, I never had problems with any of them.

Gerrit
Lizard
the clones all rooted very easily and are really starting to grow well now .

I ended up chopping the plant about a week early, I'd been 2 weeks without a toke and my veg box was getting really overgrown and I needed to make some room in the flowering chamber so I felt justified in my actions. lol.gif

I've had a small test smoke and even though I chopped the plant early I must say this is some very impressive weed, the hit is pretty instant and is followed by a nice long lasting relaxing stone my fingertips also feel a bit numb and kinda tingly, the flavour is somewhere between mazar and white russian but with a bit more subtlety than either, the smoke is pleasant and should be even nicer after a couple of weeks curing.

I'll certainly be treating the clones I have with a bit more respect than I did their mum - I'll be holding one back as a mother plant aswell, it's a definite keeper. thumbsup.gif
Gerrit
Hello Lizard,

Thanks for posting the nice ending to a grow that started somewhat dissapointing.
I'm very glad the last female turned out so well, if you are already pleased with the premature buds I have high hopes for your next crop.
How many days did she flower before you chopped her?

Sorry to highjack the thread Lizard, I just thought that I would add my 2 pence worth as I have grown out a pack of Exile myself and kept it going for a while by taking clones.

I cracked a pack of Exile and a pack of Warlock and grew them together at the same time. When I flowered them for sexing I just had clear cut males and females and no hermaphrodites throughout the whole of the grows. With the exile I ended up keeping two different mums as I had two different, but equally as good as each other, distinct phenotypes. I only kept one Warlock mother at the same time. The Warlock I found to be an eight week flowerer whilst the Exile took a week longer and flowered for nine weeks in total. When I finished off with these strains, to make space and try out a few others, I flowered off one of the Exile mums with the Warlock mum indoors and they came out cracking, but the second Exile mum I flowered outside in a sheltered back garden area that I could cover and force flower early. That really did turn out to be a marvellous smoke, a little something seemed to be added by flowering it outdoors.

I have also grown out Biddy Early outdoors a few seasons back now when it came out as I won a packet. I thought that this was a great strain for growing outdoors in Britain. It was a nice quick flowering strain, one of the plants auto flowering and finishing a good four weeks before the others, but still a great smoke none-the-less. The only thing was that I gave up trying to keep a mum for the following season as it kept wanting to go into flower. So I just let it in the end, deciding to get some more seeds if I wanted to grow it again as the previous pack were all nice and uniform plants and they are a reasonable price. smile.gif

I now have a couple of packs of the Biddy's Sister which I have not cracked just yet but am looking forward to doing so. Like I say, I have now grown three strains by Magus Genetics and they have all been great with no complaints at all from me, so I expect this fourth to live up to previous standards and impress. thumbsup.gif The Warlock does seem to be great breeding stock, Gerrit has an excellent dad there. yes.gif

Just another final comment in general aswell, I have found that all of the Magus strains I have grown myself so far have made really nice hashes and oils from the trim/ air bud. That goes double for the Warlock aswell which made some fantastic bubble. I think HydroNaut can back me up with that one to as I have seen in his gallery that he made loads of Warlock hash and have heard from people that got to try some at a previous Expo that it was a particularly mean bit of hash he made. spliff.gif

Again, sorry to highjack and go off on my own tangent in your thread Lizard but I thought someone may find the information interesting if looking at trying the Exile or one of the others themselves. wink1.gif

Gro.

I think I let her go for about 55 days all told, the majority of the pistils were still white but the buds had started to fatten up quite well.
Gerrit
Hi Growbag,

Thanks for the positive remarks.

@Lizard, 55 days is at least one week to soon so the yield as well as the quality is compromised a bit, but I can understand given the circumstance.
Two weeks without a toke is a long time indeed.

I just thought I'd post a couple of bud shots from my last exile grow, it really has turned out to be one fantastic strain I hope my earlier comments haven't put anyone off trying this one because it really is a bit of a treat.

it's a lovely looking, good yielding plant that's easy to grow and clone and it's certainly no slouch in the potency department either it's up there with some of the strongest stuff I've grown, it's got a nice fresh taste with a slight hint of pine.
