Worth pinning this for a while as our definitive guide to Amsterdam.

My first stop is usually Barney's then on to the Homegrown Fantasy. Most nights spent in the Bluebird.

Haarlem is a must for a day out.

My advice would be to stay out of the centre, to many tourists!!

Mellow Yellow (near the leidesplein), Grey area (bit small for my liking), Bluebird and Homegrown Fantasy are all friendly, comfortable places. Homegrown Fantasy usually has the best music (IMO)

As JC said, Haarlem (An easy train journey from Dam) The Quality of MJ here is the Cannines Testicles, especially T' Teehuis Smedestraat 25 and Willie Wortel's Sativa (Frans Hals) Kruisweg 46, go see u will love Haarlem .. and if u go on market day (in the main square) have some of the mega munchies on offer .. mmmmmmmmmmmmm got to plan another visit !!

homegrown fantasy do the best tasting space vanilla sponge cake,literaly out of this world...the feash orange was nice but tripped a bit at the geeza behind the bar he was a bit"jagger-esk"

when i first went i spent most me time in cafe's,
as time changes,so do your choices, as with growing it's a learning curve.....
and shit, do we learn.....i spend the days in growing shops,asking and looking
then on the nights it's cafe's & window shopping.......asking and looking.

agree totally, about getting to haarlem,infact try anywhere different -den haag,utrecht,rotterdam and breda,there might not be many there but there worth seeking out and it doesn't take long by lovelly dutch"on time"trains.

That was me ninth trip over there and my learning curves still in the coffeeshops plus me mate drives me if we wanna go elsewhere (check the coast excellent and iselmir lakes (spelling leaves me for now)
A coffeshop with a groovey toilet is Home grown fantasy (the sign of the eye) al glowy and weird heh heh

.......i was last there in august 2002,did the toilets av oyster shells on the ceilling and tiny mirrors on the walls?
through the turnstyles is a "chilled bit" i just didn't like it.
i hope it's another greenhouse as i like the one in your picture-(nice ak-47 to take back to the hotel) i'll try and find my stuff from last visit.

Guys its the Greenhouse at Waterlooplein not the Centrum one, think it is called Nastre. I agree the place is nice but the turnstyle is a bit out of keeping with the rest of the decor and is a bit of a pain in the arse.

Normally my first stop is Dutch Flowers for some supershiva.

My fav place for chillin in the day is Coffeeshop Rusland, high quality, low price and free use of the volcano vaporiser!!

Id forgotton about Rusland cool coffeeshop nearly all Dutch folks in there too nice and big inside too if i remember correctly ..


I also have to visit De Dampkring when in Dam I cant miss it, also Babas is an excellent shop for the Hashes !!

As a regular traveller to Amstelveen for work (average once or trwice a month) I get a little spoilt I guess.

My regular routine is to pick up the car from Schipol, head straight over to Sensimilia in Badhoevedorp - dead easy to find, 10mins from the airport, just off the A9 (open at 10am, so find a good excuse for not catching the first flight into Schipol).
Then in to the office for a days work -or what's left of it

Evening comes, it's back to the hotel for a shower, drink and a toke. Then my prefered route is to circumnavigate the Leidseplein, stroll down to Rembrantsplein (10 min walk) ending up back in the Leidseplein. Mellow Yellow, half way between the two squares takes up a lot of the evening before ending up in the Cafe Alto (No dope, but some truly excellent live Jazz -specially a wednesday night!)

...and I get paid to do this.

Finally before heading into the airport, it'sa quick divert back to Sensemillia's for €50 bag of White Passion to take home.

A friend is going over to Amsterdam and is a Sativa smoker. Some people have complained that in many cafes there are very few sativa joints. Someone else said that there is a cafe called Franz Hals Sativa.

EG, its in Haarlem,a short train journey from Dam, its one of Nols chain of coffeeshops a good one too (the SkunkHaze , Thai , and their Temple ball was excellent).
And its right outside the Train Station too !!

Good topic this one. Last time i went i started at the Dampkring, was dying to try the SAGE everyone was banging on about.
As i usually get the earliest flight i can i usually goto the coffeeshop that opens first, i need a good smoke after getting off the plane.
Although the first time i went to the Dam i went to the Bulldog first in the Leidesplein, YOU LIVE AND LEARN

Perhaps there could be a pinned coffeshop guide on UK420 clearly named so easy to find on the site. Perhaps Peeps could rate the shops with a poll for each one?

Also why not a pinned list of coffee shops in the UK? That would help us all to support those cafes!

I can't get in all the coffeeshops, so, the Dampkring is as good a place to start (for me) as any . Found another nice quiet place, just off Spuistraat, called Kadinsky's (I think there's more than one). It's just a simple, quiet, inoffensive place, with some good weed. Frequented by locals, with a laid back feel to it, and their AK-47 absolutely nailed me. I have never had munchies quite like that before, or since... Definitely has to be respected. Sorry, I'm wandering off topic

Love going to all the top places, dampkring, barneys,bluebird, greenhouse,abraxas etc, but have noticed that these well known places have a slightly more expensive price for the same quality you would get from a more lesser known store, picassos, coffeeshop 36 ,hunters bar are just a few places were ive been which always has a top quality well priced shop nice one , going back soon, anymore "offside" places you can tell us about?? BB.

Run by some Jamican guy, and normally only local visit. Good prices.

It's just a little futher down than Rembrantsplein.

I & the girlies prefer the Grasshopper across the road from the police station, it's great watching the 1st timers sketching around & then they have a smoke, after about 15 mins I get up & tell them about the police station across the road (next door to hostel), funny how they always leave after that

Here's the inside of our favourite smoking venue. Sorry about the slight blur, it's hard going after smoking Bubble Gum & a few cakes

Why this coffee shop? Because we can leg it back to the crowne plaza hotel to crash out & the barman always remebers what you drink.....be buggered if I can.

kc, if you're looking for an early opener (i hear you on the first flight out trick) bluebird opens at 9:30 half hour early than most. i believe barneys was or is 24 hour but it's not somewhere i'm very familiar with - yet!

although greenhouse tolstraat is a little bling bling with the celeb photos, the opulence and friendly (often very attractive) staff make it a prime coffeeshop for *lounging*. nearby katsu with the old granny and lots of locals have a some nice bubble hash including "crystal clear" with i think is pure sat. mmm. sativanederhash mmm err excuse me..... the cupystraat market with the stroopwaffel stall is worth a butcher's too.

i think dampkring/tweedekamer have the best allround selection (and venues). i prefer tweedekamer just cos its smaller sometimes big crowds make me para on strong stuff. but dampkring's excellent inside-a-tree interior makes me laugh. they're moonshine is topnotch. finally, and its a bit random 'siberie' has lots of imported weed and the seeds make for a nice breeding / cultivation project back home. well i can dream...

my favourite is choice exact.... just over the bridge from the sensi seed bank smack in the middle of the red light district...

its an old family run shop with a chilled atmosphere and they serve beer too...

a great place to relax with you favourite smoke listening to bob marley...

we got into schipol at 7.30am and were wandering towards our hotel shortly after 9 that was my first time in 'dam (goin back this summer, and every other summer ). we dropped the bags n went explorin, ended up in homegrown fantasy, got some super-crystal and went back to the hotel to smoke and pass out, as i hadn't slept for bout 28hours i loved smokin at the grasshopper by the police station, its liberating as hell saying good afternoon to a pair of coppers whilst tokin on a 3-sheeter of white widow and dubble-bubble, hahaha. peace

For me (and the missus both agree!) that first it's De Kroon (due to location from station) then its Rookies (off Leidsplien, down Korteleidsedwarsstraat) love their house special as it always knocks me into the following week (they also have a pooltable, will play any CD or tape if you ask nice enough, and serve alcohol to boot!) what a heavy lick, and then finally try and locate the Bluebird, funny enough not just for the puff but I love playing pinball and sitting upstairs in them big comfy sofas.
In the red light district (deffo avoid the Grasshopper) we found a couple that we liked. One was called 36, they played some decent dance music (36 Warmoesstraat) they also have pool tables and a pinball machine. They serve alcohol, and the atmosphere is generally good, but I find that as it isn't my favourite music, the techno can get on your nerves after a while.
The other was called Funny People (further on down past 36 before you get to China Town on the right), you guessed it a fabulous Star Wars pinball machine, nice atmosphere, although no pool table (due to lack of space) at least they do sell (if that's what you want) alcohol .
We did find a very strange one which we liked (think it was near Kalvertstraat) where the walls were decked out like you were under water. Fish and seashells lined the walls, and the atmosphere was good. Looked like it was the kind of place where the locals go...
Another one we found that we DID NOT like was off Leidsplien (missus reckons it was the Rokerij, or summat like that). First we HAD to show or passports as they said this place was just for foreigners , and then we were not allowed entry unless our hats were removed!!! From that moment on we just felt like we were in a place just to get ripped off...
Anyway just my quids worth, if you go, you will find places that you will love and lets just say not so love, but all in all worth every moment ...

me and mrs cheggs always go to the 36 first.
if you are going from the station then you go up up the hill (damrack) then take a left at the grasshopper then you are there.
just opposite route 66, sometimes we have a wicked time there but recently noticed the atmosphere or staff that good.
hopefully its back to its old good ways for april

stay away from them grashoppers there weed was double the price compared 2 most nearly 17 18 euro a grm

Gotta be Ricks Cafe in the red light district..... the quality of the weed can go up and down, and the menu isnt extensive...but the ambience in there is great... decent music, comfy chairs, but the best thing of all, is that you arent surrounded by 50 yuppies smoking their first spliff while drinkin vodka n red bull - it just isnt trendy enough...heheh

Outside in the summer next to the canal, with rock music belting out from the bar next door, a coupla bikers for eye candy....a quiet game of pool....and i think it was nepalese temple ball...... Ricks gets my vote

The Pink Flloyd was my 1st so will always be my favourite. If I remember rightly there is a minging 'hotel' opposite called the Arrivee where I spent many a paranoid afternoon having whited myself out too early in the day.

mmmm....! just came back on tues night from long weekend in the dam. nice. 3rd time over there and a few places stand out above the rest:

Noon Blueberry kicked my ass. it is nice. very fucking nice. Dampkring right up there with probably the best selection, Kali mist, Buddha sister haze and dampkring haze delight were both gorgeous smelling and pokey as you like. Barney's for NYDiesel, laughing buddha and mango punch etc etc... the list goes on - the one place that still stands out above all the rest just cos it's so chilled and serves truly excellent coffee is Hill Street Blues - it was the one place where tokers and non-tokers can sit and not feel bored. Oh and their hash truffles (even tho you need loads to get a hit) taste FUCKING AMAZING! mmmm.... the 3 kingskin neat 'geological core of the holiday' spliff of 6 types of the finest weeds was the highlight - apart from making my bird almost have a whitey outside Rookies after being in the Alto. oops. Oh and for the best thai (restaurant that is.... not green!), I cant rememeberberebbererr what it's called but it's opposite rookies off the leidseplein next to the tibetan restaurant (which incidentally is shit) - bloody lovely.
