Any of you recommend a nice low-key pleasant atmospheric type place for a 57 year old herb smoking woman to visit - will be my first visit to Amsterdam.

hows about tertulia from my notes taken on my last vist,"white coffee e1.75, 0.8 grams bubble gum e5,good weed menu with a few special 5e deals.very freindly staff,
great place to sit outside and just chill as the word goes by"

As for my starter depends on my time of arrival,if its the early flight then barneys for the breakfast spliff before heading off to one or 2 of the more out of the way places,if its later in the day then noon to stock up with blueberry.one place i always vist is basjoes, not too everybodys taste but certinly a firm favourite of the hippy, great coffee, great orange juice, fantastic northen lights, sit outsie and listen to the nearby church bells, there pretty dam cosmic, especialy there midday freakout

Wife and I went in June 2004. Walked past Homegrown Fantasy on our way to our hotel (Crowne Plaza). Headed back to HGF after we checked in, and basically stayed there for the weekend.

Best toilet Ive ever had the pleasure of using.

Allways first to Barneys after the first flight from Edinburgh then slowly make my way down to Dampkring near the flower market excellent choice and nice decor then make my way to tweede kamer really nice dutch shop and serves beer.
Mr. Sesmesesles
Just read through this thread for the first time, nice to see some of my fave hangouts mentioned already smoke.gif

I usually start out at The Bluebird in St. Antoniestraat. Great menu. Downstairs a bit plain and the serving area gets a bit cramped when it's busy, but upstairs is great with the choice of a long, low, curving leather sofa to mong out on, or stools to sit and watch the world outside go by.

From there I go (in no particular order) to...

Dutch Flowers on Singel. Try the Marijuana Cigars - a must. The staff can be unfriendly, tho', especially to blatantly obvious hippie dope tourists. Some interesting and amusing exchanges can be quietly observed as a result and are almost worth waiting for sometimes.

De Tweede KamerAlready mentioned, in the alleyway just around the corner from Dutch Flowers. Possibly the smallest coffee shop in existence with a great hash menu.

de Rokerij on Lange Leidsedwarsstraat. Gotta get there early to occupy your space, but super chilled out atmos and Indian theme.

Homegrown Fantasy on Nieuwezijds Voorburgval. Weed only, but highly recommended for the layout, atmos and the strongest space cake in town.

Chocolata on Spuistraat. Can't comment on the menu, but the hash choccies are excellent and fairly innocent looking wink.gif

De Dampkring on Handboogstraat. Already recommended, lovely interior.

Katsu on Eerste van der Helststraat, near the Albert Cuyp market. Off the beaten track and a fine example of a nice little local coffeeshop. Good menu, nice people.

Betty Boop on Nieuwezijds de Kolk. Intimate with a nice pine interior, loads of Betty and internet facilities upstairs. Also has a terrarium with rare and beautifully colourful tree frogs.

Baba on Warmoesstraat. Already mentioned. Nice airy, open space with a mid 20th Century decor. Good munchies and drinkies.

Dolphins on Kerkstraat. Was busted for overstocking and banned from selling dope for a while, but I think they've got their licence back now. Cool decor and surroundings.

The Bulldog on Oudezijds Voorburgwal. Well, I suppose you gotta pay homage, but I don't hang around in there unless the seat by the window is free. Voyeuristic fun can then be had watching the hookers across the canal.

Dread Rock on Oudezijds Voorburgwal. Dived in there once to get out of the rain and wound up staying for hours. Shabby, chilled out and unpretencious with good pool table prices, it's a great little dive with great atmos and some nice weed for sale.

Cool place, quite the most bizarre bogs I've ever seen. Took me a full 5 mins to realise WTF was going on. Mirrors and weed can play cruel tricks on you...

But, it sometimes has snobby staff and I hate that turnstyle.

An interesting place, but not the best CS in the damage. The best by a mile is still De Kuil.

Gotta be Tweede Kamer for me then usually stagger up to the Greenhouse, used to always visit Willie Wortels til it moved, I also like Yanks in Zandvoort as thats where I usually stay now, Centre Parks, can't recommend it enough and the fact that its built next door to the ex-grand prix track dosen't sway a car geek like me. Ah waking to the sound of race cars while sitting in my wee pourch having my morning toke.
Next time I'm there I'm wanting to try Barneys as I've heard so much about it and Bush Doctors as I was told they had a menu of bubblehash where you can choose what strain of bud its made from, can anyone confirm this?
Sir Baggalot of Bud
Barney's is a great wee coffeshop, and they do a mean breakfast too!

A friend and I are off to A'dam in 4 short weeks and funnily enough, this very question was discussed a few nights ago. We decided to go to Barney's for starters, waiting patiently for the Grey Area to open to scoop up some of their fine, fine Kif (the unpressed trichomes), which was being made from their 4077 med weed the last time I was over.

I cannot find the words to convey the supreme pleasure and utter astonishment that this angel-dust induces. Each and every single toke seems to take you just that little bit higher, that little bit further than you've ever been before. And the spliffs are absolutely impossible to put down or pass on! The best, nay the only way to sum up the awesomeness of this Kif is to quote Jim Morrison

QUOTE
Out here in the perimeter there are no stars. Out here we is stoned... Immaculate

My first ever coffeeshop experience was The Doors Cafe (funnily enough), and what a 1st experience it was! We were just off the train and I was hungry (as I often am), so I asked the barman in the Doors if they had any food. His reply will go with me to my grave.

QUOTE
I'm sorry my friend, we only sell drugs and alcohol

What class! A real Kodak moment biggrin.gif Suffice to say we ordered a selection of both and my hunger pangs were quickly replaced by an intense couch-lock session. Followed by a gradual rising sensation which threatened to actually lift me off my seat at times. The speaker behind me was faulty and faded in and out constantly which I think was at least partly responsible for my perilous state of inebriation! Nothing to do with the Oranjeboom, Northern Light's, AK-47 and White Widow which we variously and copiusly consumed.... Honest it wasn't unsure.gif

*phew* sorry about that un-called for ramble into the smoke filled recesses of my imagination... I have obviously toked too much tonight to make sensible contributions. Oh well, off to watch next month's Simpsons

Confirmed, both the Amstel & Rembrantsplien Bushdocters have the fabled ice-o-lator menu, and top of the list, when in stock is JellyHash. You wont usually find the "ice"menu readily available on the counter & will have to ask for it,and they will "advise" on how strong the stuff really is.Seen too many "tourists" tokers wiped out by the stuff.Mate there xmas/newyear,no Jelly but at 30euros a gram he didnt mind lol.gif, plenty of other pure weed ice-o-lators tho at 20/25 euros a gram.....Enjoy

p.s.....edited to add barneys rocks too, good weed & brekkies too!
Lupes
For me its Kadinsky's...just a laid back place with an old station clock that never moves...not the greatest dope or the best coffee, unpretentious & relaxed.

Hmmm...well, I'm a bit of sad bugger here. I prefer the really dark, dingy places. I usually find the people are great, and real helpful. I still go back to my first ever coffee shop, everytime I visit the Dam. Always my first, and always my last.
The Blues Brothers

OK...it is in no way a modern coffee shop, but it has this warm lived in feeling to it. The kind you get if you went to an old theatre.
Anyway, thats just me

I've had some good times in the Blues Brothers many years ago now, MM as a lot of my friends used this place... and had some good times in there thumbsup.gif and met some good people I'll never forget... yes.gif

Last time I stayed in Haarlem,a short train journey from Dam, 11 miles.Frans Hals is one of Nols chain of coffeeshops a good one too yes.gif also very friendly
.An advantage is you can stay above the coffeeshop. Which a bunch of us did..last year, great place to meet up.. guitar.gif ..its right outside the Train Station- Nols also written a book about coffeeshops history and culture in Holland,
IPB Image
so he knows his ganja, and prides himself on good standards, which I agree

I'll remember that next time I'm going across. Its all about pride at the end of the day. I've never really liked these multi-corp style coffee shops, because most of the time they're out to make money. The small places are just doing it because they want to. And thats the reason why I go back.

themagicman I just remembered that my friends left a badge up in the Blues Brothers, A NCC badge,- a diamond shape one- National Chopper Club, is it still there? I must make the effort to go there again...

Nol has some good weed, I was doing amnesia haze, and NYCD when I was there last...

I'm sure you'd like Haarlem

yinyang.gif winnie

ps I need to go there and chill,

I love Holland and when are we going to have english coffeeshops , and become civilised
stringy1
yeah the shops out of central tend to be cheaper theres a good little place called happy people[tram14 from dam sq] extensive hash/grass menu 15eur for iceolator. Its close to camping zeeburg which we always stay in summer although it gets full last week in july/aug i hope there showin the footie this summer.
charliepirate
havn't been in a few years but myself and the missus used to always go to balou's off of the rembrandtsplien. its a tiny littleplace with internet upstairs and they will let you pick the sounds, hardly any tourists almost all dutch people , they pop in at lunch break for a quick spliff and a cuppa, really friendly and helpfull staff.
there was one called cum laude who had the blackest stickiest gloop called ming but it changed name but when it was cum laude they had the best selection i ever saw.
by the way i did notice if you go over out of season ie.jan-mar then prices are way way lower and you get a better selection but be prepared for torrential rain and lightning(free light show). alternatively try utrecht its a better cleaner city with less rip off merchants.
yeah i would love to get back again but a growing family makes this harder ,
go to holland and enjoy

Your right Dr pure bud,Centrals a great coffee shop, and one of the best for value in the centre of Amsterdam.

It depends on what time of day i arrive!,If its early, its straight off to Barneys for a Breakfast and some Carramello cream!. If not its straight to Babas on Wormostraat..Only really for sentiment,It was the first coffee shop i went in on my first visit to Amsterdam..

Hi all I'm new to these forum things, I would like to say my first and favourite stop is Hunters Bar on the Warmoesstraat fortunately it is right next door to the hotel I stay in which is not too far from the centraal station, the decor and music is of the type where you just skin up sit back and spread out, due to new regulations some of the coffee shops no longer sell both alcohol and weed it seems to be either one or the other, still at least they haven't taken a leaf out of our book and made them all no smoking.
I go to Amsterdam fairly often and with so many coffee shops to explore I had a surf around the net and found a good guide with all the addresses of the different places to chill if anyone is interested it was from a site called
elite-publications.com. Can't wait to go back and will hopefully be going back in early September

Gray area for my bubble gum - mmmmmmm

i still want to get into barnys but its full all the time cry.gif every time ive went- i like the sound of there breakfast - there's one with a steak on it - al be having that i think.

Always Central, The Coin and then The Gerstekorrel Hotel - it shall be no different come monday morning biggrin.gif
Jelly_Phenom
Barneys breakfast is allday and you right it is always rammed so best bet is get really baked the night before and sleep intill 12-1 then take a walk over there and you will not struggle as much to get some delicious breakkie smile.gif

yinyang.gif
Perfect Haze
Rastababy cuz it's near centraal station and I likes the conservatory bit.
Duke-Nukem
Grasshopper normally but that's cos its on the way to the hotel we usually stay at and its got loads of space outside for sitting around having that first spliff, small coffeeshops don't work when there's a group of you and everyone's got a bag to be left at the hotel.

Get rid of the bags then head back to the main part of the town, go between coffeeshops using this map http://www.coffeeshop.freeuk.com/General/Map.html which doesn't show all the places but it means you can use coffeeshops as landmarks for finding your way around lol.gif.
hudson
Always central for me, great weed and prices, cool budtenders and across the street from the station. I usually walk around aimlessly for the next hour or so before I wonder into some random coffeeshop but this time i wanna go with a plan. I'm thinking of barneys, amnesia or dampkring next.
jack_rowe
dunno why but i always start at Ricks cafe, aint been over for couple of years tho... a trip will have to be made soon beer.gif smoke.gif

420 for me , cant fault the place.

but then again i want to try a few different types of bud which are not there - but what bud to choose , you gotta love the choice...

cant wait to get back

lol.gif I was actually explaining this to my brothers last night while we planned their first Dam pilgrimage.

For some reason I HAVE to go to Sheeba and pickup some nepal hash, then HAVE to go to Hill St Blues for some NL bud. Only a gram of each and it certainly isn't the best, but it's the ritual to ensure good times and I stick to it!

On the right of the Damrak as well....Just before (Or mabey after!) Teasers

Nice bag of AK-47 and then off to the Greenhouse

Ummmmmm Happy Days

I always start off at De Kroon too! cool.gif

5 minutes walk (or less) from Centraal station, good weed, and a modern feel. smile.gif
Also open hella early!

Im taking my 4th trip to dam in just over a week, after 5 months in a country with a 5 year jail sentence for posession of one joint unsure.gif

Tweede kamer everytime as its slighly less busy than the Dampkring.
mokum777
de oude kerk (old church) is usually the first for me, its close(ish) to my usual hotel, and i know a few people who work in the krasnapolsky hotel, so i usually just go to the coffeeshop, give them a phone an usually meet up there
Johna
To be honest I didnt really have a preference for the first one I go to. Jus the first 1 I see. I try not to go in the same one more than once n sample a bit from everywhere.

Johna
Goodtimes247
The Dolphin (near wok and walk) for us, the staff are very friendly. Then on to Barneys smile.gif
dogzilla
Centraal, get a nice fat bag for 25 euros.
Perfect Haze
depending on wether I roll into a'dam proper via road or rail. Rail pop into rastababys cuz i like it's conservatory and chairs outside for relaxing and people watching. If i arrive in a taxi then it'll probably be bushdoctor or rokerij for some satty hazey goodness. smile.gif
Scooby Snax
we always go straight to "SPEAKEASY", on the Oudebrugsteeg (off damrak) in between the Grasshopper and Baba's, 5 minutes from central station

its not the most inspiring place in town and you won't want to stay long

but its weed is top notch, the prices are the lowest in town and they do some serious weed cake that is an awesome start to any day!

you will also see other coffeeshop employees buying their weed in there which has to be good wink.gif
GreenNinja
We always head to the Greenhouse in the RLD and have done ever since the early 90s. Initially it was the Tolstraat one, but then the RLD one became easier and quicker after landing.

The ritual is get off the train, or out of the cab at the hotel, chuck bags on beds, fast walk to Greenhouse, score 3g of SSH and a coffee, roll a fattie, check the time, smoke j, drink coffee, 30 minutes later the walls are melting and everyone is happy smile.gif

Unfortunately in recent years the SSH is just shit - a shadow of what it used to be. Still a great venue to hang out with friends, despite Arjan's seedy shenanigans, with lots of great memories.

My first visit to the dam wasn't so long ago. We stopped off at Hunters coffee shop and will hopefully be stopping off there again soon to sample some of that fine fine sour diesel. cool.gif

Hi, welcome to UK420 smile.gif

This time we'll be starting off by dropping into cafe 420, conveniently placed a few blocks behind our hotel, for some Super Silver Haze. Then off to HGF or Amnesia.

Last time we picked up some L.A. Confidential from Centraal coffeeshop on the way to the hotel, had a joint, then wandered around a bit until randomly finding cafe 420. We bought some SSH and I rolled up a spliff of it, we literally couldn't move our arses off the seat for 30 mins. We just sat in a daze smiling at each other and staring at the big TV playing Planet Earth, finding it pretty funny how caned one joint got us. It was awesome biggrin.gif
