pulled a pot out a pebble based flood and drain that was wilting through pump failure. in the almost dry tub were lots of tiny maggots. only 2 or 3mm long, very thin, with two feelers out there head. dunno about legs, there just to small.

there are 1 or 2 flys in the room. litterally 1 or 2. the leafs do have tiny metalic spots but not like anything crawled, just tiny spots on some lower ones.

the maggots jump. they float aswell. even floating on the surface they jump. they fly a few inchs.

i did not think thrips larve collenated roots, or jumped. but silver/shiney reflections off the leafs are saying something.

they appear to be white. black when dead. or that could be dead root hairs. hard to tell really

update: 7mm per litre of liquid malathion solution is two much 4 them to live in. they go nuts but in 15mins there is no more movement.
melted marathons(liquid malathion)is great at killing plants....
will that kind of dose finish them off?

friendly electrician i stongly recommend you get hold of some hypoaspis they feed on the larvae that munch and crap on your roots. These little babies are a growers best friend. i had a major situation with the blighters last smmer,if it wasn't for the hypoaspis mites i wouldn't have a grow on the go now

p.s they eat thrip eggs and lavae same with fungus gnats(scarid fly)also reported as preying on spidermite

i think there actually cream coloured, getting thinker towards one end, where they are black.

ive read that not long ago. little white buggers with black faces it said, but nothing about jumping..


im quite chemically orientated. not really fond of adding predators. i want to smoke the bugger

edit: white with black heads is the fungus gnat, but there head is smaller than there body. this dont look like that, but they could be related i guess...

Sorry didn't maen to cause offence. imeant funny as in the damage these friendly mites cause to your problem and will not have any adverse effct on the final product that we're all lovers of.

Thats fungus gnats you've got mate!!
the larva are called spring tails, can you guess why??
they can damage the roots of your plants as they like to munch on them when they are young then they emerge out of the soil, the ones that you see flying around are the adults!!
get some gnat off and mix that with your feeds at the ratio of 1ml per litre until the infestation is gone.
I also used a uv insect trap to catch the adults and i removed all the springtails that i could see under my pots too.

Friendlly, i empathise with your plight try gnat off root soak if preditor mites don't appeal to you.I recently was given an armaggedon clone that had been rooted in coir.I'd noticed the odd scarid and didn't think any thing of it at the time.If only i had acted sooner.I found out that one of the little shits can lay up to 400 eggs at a time.That's 400 hungry larvae screwing your plant,thus robbing the plant of max nute uptake potential.
Anyway good luck with the eradication of the root munchers.

I was so hopefull it was fungus gnats. We wouldnt normally even look in the tubs, but did a few days ago aswell, and there was nothing noticed then. must be breeding like feck. im used to seeing the flys first, and strangly enough seen hundreds of the buggers elsewhere just last week. or not so strangly, as the case may be!

well, its filling with a malathion solution atm. just 1mm per litre, because he ran out, which is probably a good thing

re: malathion
used to come as powder to water in. now banned. only been a liquid concentrate for spraying for about 10 years. rooted cuttings, in rockwell, can be completely submersed in low doses. litterally turns water white. cuttings then die in 24 hours if not washed off/out. otherwise there survivers.

best way to find the dose is putting bugs in a solution then upping the dose every 20mins till the bugs die. use the spray instructions as a rough guide, and start pritty low.
nasty shit, but good at saving infested strains from death. or you just might kill them. passed as safe to crop 4 days later.

there's an odd fact i half recall. the states banned it, but still spray with it themselfs. if thats not odd enough, guess what they spray? Some major state. all off it. even the citys. its all bog land and they suffer from some fly that just must go. sounds extreme to me. nasty stuff thats banned or boarderline banned depending on form and country. still 4 days till chop though....and use within 2 hours of mixing.

bloody things are odd. look like the gnat larve, but with one end (25% of the thing) black, and two feelers, and they jump.

perhaps there were two bugs. i recall some with feelers, and some with a black head, but not both traits together. nasty to think there are two unknowns though.

sod it. there dead anyway, and some proprietry pesticide will probably kill them whatever they are if they recollinate.

i need a good camera...

Update:
The crops down (some weeks ago) and no more bugs appeared. However, the liquid malathion took its toll. The top 10" of the crop was healthy looking, but the buds a little small. however, the other 30/35 inchs were dead. dead dead. like soft brown or no longer there. only the stalks and the odd dead leaf remained. The crop was very level when it was treated, and over time all soft tissue treated died. the new growth was fine though so the main buds were untouched while the rest was gone. Thankfully he bins the bottoms anyway, and the tops came to 4.3oz per plant at 7 weeks on a number 1. Thats a dissapointing 480grams per square meter. Should of been around 650 with the middles.
