Arnold Layne
I have been given a load of Malawi seeds from a friend; they have come from South Africa where a farmer has been growing them for yonks. Pure, straight Malawi weed.
Has anyone here grown this in the UK?
I don't know whether to try them in my limited headroom Grow-drobe (c.5Ft, give or take a few inches), or maybe take them outdoors?
Any info much appreciated, thanks etc etc.
FD
yup
great strain - 12-16 weeker, superb sativa high, stretches like a motherfucker - mine was superbudded the first time at 6 inches and still hit 6ft
2nd time 12/12 from seed, bang on 12 weeks but still 6 ft

27 inch buds the width of 5l water bottles

one of my fave plants/strains ever
FD
dont reckon it be no good outdoors in this climate- take forever to finish unless u forced her early
FD
pic of pics unfortunately

its very good yielder for a sat tho

Malawi is no good for outdoors as far north as the UK unfortunately

Malawi itslef is about as close to 12/12 as you can get, being just off the equator

Grown indoors MG can go straight onto 12/12 and should ideally be started in as large a pot as possible, as it wants to put down a big taproot ... you should mostly get females ... there is a short, compact pheno among the Malawi gene pool

Indoor Malawi buds are sadly not as dense as outdoor, but they are worth the time - an option is also making F1s, which will have impressive vigour, helthy yields, with delicous highs and resins

Well, I dunno about F1's - I don't have the space to do the selecting and stabilising of parent strains. But I had come around to the conclusion that the best use of them would be to hack-cross them out. Maybe a hack with the Skunks I'm growin'. But its all way off in the future, I got to master my 'Drobe yet.

Hiya - my guess would be that it is a fairly good chance seeds from Malawi will be authentic landrace, and vigorous plants ... would not expect them to show sings of hybridity early on in leaf shape change or anything like that, but still to grow very fast ... anything is possible of course ... do you have pics of the seeds? Malawi Gold I have seen are plump convex, slightly larger than average, no markings, deep copper colour, serated ridge indented round base, and slightly sharp edges at joins ... no probs with hermies in the Afropips ones

Hear what you say, but crossing a good Malawi with a strong, fragrant indica will produce some amazing F1s - as long as you selected a well-structured male from a decent strain seems to me you are odds on to have plenty of quality offspring ... hybrid vigour is insane in African sativa mother x male Indica crosses

F1s can still go straight onto 12/12 ... aromas are extraordinary

re. which, now smoking (Malawi Gold / DP Blueberry) x Sweet Tooth #3 green pheno and it is fecking lovely

a.ka. Triple Treat from Afropips ... Sweet Malberry would be another good name for it ... I think it is fair to say that the smell is delectable:

berry herbal aroma ... both sweet and pungent ... complex, with a heavy dank edge ... candy sweet on the tongue, velvety smooth and intensely aromatic smoke ... soft green crystally buds, tinged blue and mauve

the high comes on gently, is very spacious, with a very strong but smooth lift as it progresses ... excess indulgence eventually leads to feelings of being both drunk and tripped out

think it's fair to say Malawi hybrids are The Bee's Knees - go for it

I look forward to seeing the results if you do ever grow them Arnold, I've just bought some Nigerian seeds from afropips which I'll be planting on tuesday and I'll be switching all my plants to 12/12 on the 27th.

The guy at afropips says a 10 day veg cycle should get me plants aprox a meter tall, I've known plenty of Africans who have said the weed from their part of the world is by far the best, I've never been there to find out so hopefully I'll get an idea with the Nigerian, but growing it in a wardrobe with no previous experience, probably not.. I'd best save some of the seeds.

Hi Arnold, I've been promised some seeds from next door...Mozambique...wild Sat plants, grow to about 3 metres according to a mate, not very productive, but extremely psychoactive. He's stationed there later on this year, so it'll be a while yet...more experience under the belt wink1.gif

I've been wondering what to do with them...so I'll be watching this thread with interest.

BTW is it likely that these will be the same strain...you say Malawi and farmers, but is that a true local genotype or have they been "improved"? don't really understand the genetics of the African strains, nor the others if truth be told...but the Africans more so wink1.gif

How many varieties are native to the continent...true vars, anybody know?

Durban, swazi and malawi are the three african staples I think.

namkha
hiya - those three are just some of the better known African sativas outside of Africa (in the case of "Durban Poison" there is some controversy over the origins of the name and strain)

Malawi Gold cultivars can have extremely elegant and sophisticated highs - and can also be very psychoactive

strains from the Central and West Africa generally have a very good reputation - Congolese, Senegalese and Nigerian are quite often referred to

it's worth remembering that the name of the political region, the regional names for grass, and the diversity of cultivars on the ground are three seperate issues

there is more diversity than generalisations convey

hiya LSL - Durban, Swazi and Malawi are just some of the better known regional types of African grass, in particular they are better known outside of Africa, largely thanks to South Africans

but these are not the "staples" in Africa - which is a huge continent, with absolutely stacks of other regions that have had established growing traditions since centuries ago: Senegal, Nigeria, Congo, Morocco to name but a few

Hiya,
Durban poison is the original name for the Sativa
endemic to the Kwazulu Area around Durban, South Africa.
In the 70's it was Internationally renown as one of the potentest varieties.
Original Durban poison comes wrapped in sticks (pencils)
& are sold in a roll of 20 sticks.
The shorter sticks are called Pietermaritzburg Slugs.
(The bunch of 20 sticks resembles a pistol revolver)

The Durban Poison offered by most Seed companies is not the pure original & has been crossed with faster flowering Indica varieties.
USA breeder supporters claim a famous US breeder created DP are barking up the wrong tree as per usual.

Afropips has the Original Pure Sativa Durban Poison collected at the source . Selected & bred from the most potent plants.

Cool Runnings........

Malawi thats another strain that sounds interesting to me doh.gif

Good luck with the Malawi Mr Layne, i know you will enjoy the fruits of your labour!!!

Malawi's are very hardy and tough plants so don't stress too much about how they get grown, i've occasionally forgotten the odd pot outside and around the house (but this is in africa)!
