Making a carbon filter.Made from radiator grille housing.

Just cut with snips and shape then bind with soft wire much like a fishing basket is bound.

That's a top view of the wall and bottom.When bound,the shape will become regular.

I'll construct a similar size disc with a hole for the 100mm diam tube.

I'll put pics up tomorrow when it's bound and I've knocked up a top plate and central tube. yinyang.gif
deanbo
Where can you get that radiator housing mesh stuff Dr R ?

looking good. wink.gif
dr rockster

Hi Deanbo mate, I was lucky enough to get a couple of sheets of it from my neighbour as she was throwing out these 2 radiator grilles so I grabbed them and dumped the surrounds.

I'da thought somebody like Homebase would do them or more likely Wickes.

Sorry I can't be more helpful but it was a chance find on my part but I know you can buy it easily.

That's the bottom and side wired up together.

Now for the top plate and central tube. yinyang.gif

Sorry,previous pic was incorrect.This is the one and you can see the binding wire holding it together.

Thats the central tube,cut and bound with wire.Used a light to hopefully show it a bit better.Now for a solid tube which'll be an interference fit with the central one and a solid top plate with a hole for the tube to come out and it's done. yinyang.gif

Hi there ms kitty,
I'll make a solid tube with a similar size diameter to the central tube and they will be joined together.Then imagine a round,solid(not mesh) toplate with a hole in it so the tube can poke down into the carbon filter. The solid end of the tube which protrudes from the top of the unit,out of the top hole is then connected to a bit of ducting which is then connected to your fan.

I'll be starting on the tube and toplate after my rounds in the garden today and I'll get some more pics up.

I wanted to make the tube from the metal of an old paint can as its easy to cut and bend but I cant find any amongst my tools and stuff so I'm going to cut up a lowbay unit which is a big metal box with a light in it basically and use that.

Should be ready to rock by tea time hopefully,filled with carbon and ready to go. yinyang.gif

@Deanbo. I had a look in my local Wickes for this stuff but they dont do it but I have seen this gear for sale in a Wickes type builders merchants.

Nice work Dr Rockster i will be loitering around tea time to see the finished product .

I wonder if i could use a old motorbike can for that after removing the baffles ?

However i like yours very much Dr .. the gold mesh is appealing in a BLING growroom kind of way guitar.gif
Cant wait to see all the pictures ...and dont forget a face mask or some big knickers when filling it up with activated carbon. nea.gif

Big knickers Badboy?

[attachmentid=123781]

Righto,I scrubbed the idea of cutting up the metal skin of a lowbay to make the tube as I found a can that I've cut up and made a similar diameter tube to the central one.

@Suzukibadboy,

Starting to look less bling and more argos reject but it's functionality we are after,after all.

Just have to rummage around for a top plate and I've just cracked it in that my local kebab house has 10L drums of vegetable oil stacked out the back so I'll go liberate one of them.

No I'm not going to nick it,the kebab guys a good mate.In fact he was telling the other shopkeepers I was just a medi user and not a dealer when I was last busted.

Does a mean lamb sish n' all.(lovely garlic sauce.......slurp!) yinyang.gif

[attachmentid=123792]

No Badboy,not a tuna can but my old 'batchelors sewing kit'. I may be an old hippie but I don't go around with my arse hanging out of my trizers...............usually whistling.gif

Just a pic to show its original diameter and the piece I had to cut out to get it to fit.

All done with NASA engineering tolerances as you can see. wink1.gif

Ooh Badboy,my feminine side keeps asking me to ask you for pics bigboy..........or can I call you Suzi? whistling.gif

Cooeee! ms kitty? Is it starting to make sense? Just need a top plate with a hole for the central tube.
Was going to use an old vegetable oil drum for the sheet metal but I've been to the kebab shop and they've changed to plastic ones so that's out.

I'll have a dig around Chez Rockstere and see what I can find. Almost there,not long now. yinyang.gif

Right,well I couldnt find any suitable tin sheet for the top plate so I'll butcher an 11ltr pot to make that and then just gaffer tape the mother.

I'll get pics of that up next. yinyang.gif

4 years together aniversary meal tonight 34.gif can you believe Dr i have to get dressed up for it

Yet 40 mins before you leave your still waiting for pics of a carbon filter rofl.gif
i reckon we are addicted to this place he he
T1
P.S cool filter doc guitar.gif
dr rockster
[attachmentid=124228]

4 years and she hasnt slung you out yet Badboy?

That deserves a celebration! wink.gif

But back to the filter.As you can see I've cut out the bottom of a pot and cut it to size so it's a rough intereference fit.Just have to mark and cut out a hole for the central tube,gaffer it up(after filling)and that's it. yinyang.gif

I was about to have some tea so I'll not be rushed but I'm sure it's not the end of the world if I don't finish before the Badboy puts his glad rags on and goes tripping the light fantastic.

So is it MacDonalds you're going to or are you pulling out all the stops Badboy and your gonna big it up in Burger King? yinyang.gif
dr rockster
[attachmentid=124235]

Thats the carbon particles with a Zippo for scale. yinyang.gif
T1
I had the exact same Zippo as that, till i split up with my ex who gave me it, then i she asked for it back, so i took the lighter out the inside and out a cheapo one in from the pound shop and gave her that and kept the good Zippo lighter in the cheap steel case smile.gif dunno where it is now though lol.gif

Dur wot T1? You gave her the internals of a cheapo but with the good casing?

Wrong way around my boy! wink.gif
dr rockster
[attachmentid=124252]

That's the filter with the top plate cut out and fitted.Just have to fill it now and seal up with gaffer tape and then we are done. yinyang.gif
dr rockster
[attachmentid=124259]

Well I wasnt happy with the fit of the first top so I've scrapped that and made another.

So give me a few mins and I'll cut the hole for the central tube before filling and taping up.

@Badboy.Hope you and your good lady and a nice meal squire. guitar.gif
dr rockster
[attachmentid=124265]

There ya go,the MK II version.It looks a bit wonky but when when filled and gaffered it'll look half ok.

Nah its the good lighter that i liked thumbsup.gif
i prefered the cheapo case coz it was just stainless stell brushed,
Anyways thats a cracking looking filter mate smile.gif
Nicley put together, love the inovative use of the plant pot!!

[attachmentid=124273]

As you can see,very Heath Robinson.Just use gaffer tape to hold it all together.I'll now fill it and gaffer tape it and tidy it up a bit. yinyang.gif
tom o'rite
nice one doctor rocktapus

What is the air resistance like compared to ye olde biscuit tinne models? Lower, I take it?

deanbo
That's a nice piece of kit you've knocked up there Rockster.

Good job. wink.gif guitar.gif
dr rockster
[attachmentid=124300]

ET VOY LAR!

All done and ready to go but just have to add a couple of mounting rings which I'll probably make from keyrings,ya know,the round steel things you slip your keys onto?

@Tom. I don't know if it would be more efficient than the types made with a biscuit tin but it must be more efficient than the ready made ones as they have tiny holes compared to this so logic states it should be better. yinyang.gif
ms kitty
wot an excellent job doc thumbsup.gif smile.gif yahoo.gif
dr rockster
[attachmentid=124338][attachmentid=124337]

Glad you like it ms kitty.Almost ready to go,just have to pop out and get another keyring like you see in the pic,so it has 2 points from which you can suspend it. yinyang.gif
dr rockster
[attachmentid=124339]

Sorry,cocked the pics up,doh! doh.gif
dr rockster
[attachmentid=124342][attachmentid=124341]

Righto,second mounting ring fitted,job done,hurrah!

@Deanbo.That's your ali that's being posted today mate and I've enclosed a bit of that grille material.Dunno,you might find a use for it? yinyang.gif
dr rockster
[attachmentid=124734]

On it's way,from the gunslinger of filter makers. wink1.gif
Bullockmush
Hi All,

Loks like a nice job Dr thumbsup.gif

Did anyone find a common UK source for the radiator material?

BM
dr rockster

Well I just saw Anaconda has posted in his carbon filter thread that you can get sheets of it from B&Q for £11.20.
