i know this technically in the outdoor section, but its the only place specifically for growing fuit+veg.
id like to grow some fruit or veg under some T8 tubes, not so much to save money, but just for the fun of growing and the satisfaction of eating somthing i created. i will probably be using 4x4' T8's, however im not sure that T8s will be enough to grow edibles.
id like to grow cherry tomatoes, peppers, onions, chamomile, lettuce, and anything thats nice to eat and fun to grow.
what plants do you think would grow well under these low wattage lights?

you could grow anything really, however you'd have to do a bit of a search on what plants are responsive to photoperiod and whatnot.. but other than that, everything should grow just fine under cfls.. give it a shot, nothing to loose but precious grow space

If you experiment then please post your results because I'd be very interested in this too. Not so much grow the whole crop under lights but definitely start the vegetable growing season a month or so earlier than I do now.
I took some cuttings of some Blackcurrant Sage about 10 days ago and placed them under a 125w blue Evirolite 3 days ago. They're not dead yet! In fact they look very healthy! I've left one cutting in a windowsill for comparison. Not exactly 'food' but I enjoy experimenting.

Lettuce will grow fine. Peppers will be OK until the point at which they drop the flowers, then they'll need a
lot more light. Same with tomatoes or any similar sized fruit. Your best bet is to use the fluoros to get a jump on the outdoor growing season. I have done it with peppers the last couple of years and it means they're getting ripe in mid-late July rather than the end of August. Just start them off in February/March and plant out in early June.

id like to be able to grow the plants under the tubes to the point where i can eat the fruits, i dont want to have to grow them outdoors.
i like the idea of being a god, creating an enviroment, and then enjoying your creation. if put somthing like this togther id like to do one of those grow trolleys with three diffrent shelfs. it would as much of an ornament as anything else.
i went down to a local nursary and saw cherry tomatoe plants growing under single 4'tubes in a hot room. the tomatoes were small, but it does seem to be possible. i would use more tubes than then they used, so hopfully i should be able to achieve bigger toms. i might go and buy a couple and try to make some clones later this week.

I grow basil plants in my fluorescent grow room. They're annuals too and make great practise plants for training methods to see roughly how the ol canna will respond. Also, a small tub of wheatgrass tucked into any spare floorspace is a boon for the hardup health freak! Any spare lumens will do.
