Bob's Youth Hostel

A crazy, fun, social hostel that is cheaper than the infamous Flying Pig hostels, and with a location close to the Red Light district and the Centraal station. But bring cash, they don't take anything else.
Amsterdam is notoriously expensive and after staying at a couple of hostels, Bob's was refreshingly cheap. And surprisingly good! So many people on this site have said that it is dirty but I didn't find that at all. Ok, it might not be as immaculate as a Hostelling International place but the sheets were clean, the floors were clean and the room was bright and appealing. The only problem I had with this place was that I was stuck on the top floor which is a spine-curling climb up these incredibly narrow stairs. And being that this is Amsterdam, its always a bit more of an effort
Each floor of the hostel has around 12 beds in 2 rooms and these share two showers and one toilet. As some other people have mentioned, when this place fills up, "Bob" allows weary travellers to crash on a matress on the floor. The bottom floor has a bar which is the same place that the breakfast is served in the morning. Don't expect the best breakfast of your life though, its 2 slices of bread, jam, tea (coffee costs extra) and some questionable scrambled eggs (yum). The bar is fun though and fills up at night with friendly smokers. Just make sure that you don't smoke in the room or you will be "paying a 500 guilder fine" when the "alarm" calls the fire department.
The hostel itself doesn't really have that many extras. There is no laundry or email but you do get a locker and there is a public phone. By the way, public phones in the Netherlands suck. As far as getting reservations, they told me just to show up before 8:30am and I would get a bed. I don't think they actually take reservations so just make sure that you arrive early.
Practical Info: Getting there- walk to the right when exiting the Centraal station and walk down to the end of the station. Turn right and follow the tram tracks, cross the bridge and look for Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal. It is about a 5 minute walk on the right. Getting around- Amsterdam is small enough that you don't really need to use transit but it might be an idea to take the tram to places like the Van Gogh museum and the Rijksmuseum which are a bit of a walk. Internet- none here at the hostel but just grab a copy of "Boom Chicago" magazine and the map on the back shows you where "Easy Everything" internet cafe is.
