Hi Everybody,

Been reading this site for a while & decided to take the plunge.

Wondered if anyone has any tips for getting seeds to germinate?
I tried the airing cupboard & top of TV which is never off in our house but no joy yet.
Is rockwool / tissue good for this or should I try compost or something?
Will be going hydro when i've got something to go with. For medicinal purposes.
Any help much appreciated.

Have a browse around, there's loads of info on germing wink1.gif

gud afternoon and welcome,

I've tried loads of methods for germing, glass of water with seeds in, kitchen roll, planting straight in.

I tend to do the same as Arnie now and just hoy em in a pot with some compost.

Good luck

Welcome!

I always find, as the good General Layne has said already, that just chucking them into compost, or a Jiffy plug (compost pellet in a likkle nylon bag) works wonders for me. Maybe soak them in a glass of water for 12-24 hours, first if they're old/tough beans, maybe. But IMHO, the tissue paper/plastic bag/tweezers method has always seemd a little OTT & fiddly to me.

thanks for the input guys, seem to have some tough old beans so might try the soaking in water trick & then compost to c if they start. Otherwise I'll have to spend some more pennies. Any particular skunk recommendations?

doh.gif ps If i make a boo boo I apologise in advance 'cos i've never posted to anything before so my etiquette may be poor.

unsure.gif pps sounded a bit posh there didn't I. Must be the lack of mj around here. Hope these things germ soon.

Hi yorkshirelassg, welcome to uk420

have you tried the paper towel method yet?
small plate
paper towel
seeds on towel
dampen towel
another layer towel
damp towel
small plate(upside down) on top
put in plastic bag (sealable if poss)
put in warm dark place

check every day to make sure the towel doesn't dry out
seeds should germ in about 2-3 days, sometimes quicker

never failed me
try it
good luck

My first seeds for my first grow were Skunk #1. Cheap, a good smoke (so I hear) and quite easy to grow.
I germed mine by putting them in damp tissue paper on a plate, sticking cling film over it, then sticking it in airing cupboard. Took a few days, but they all popped.

Good luck!

I've only used the rockwool method and it worked great for me smoke.gif

Hi and Welcome,

As to your Q for germing, Stick them in a litre of 3% H20 treated water @ 0.5ml/litre. Should all show within 48 hours-60 max. Dark, warm enviro.
Way I do it. If they don't show, don't bother.
Pot 5mm under surface of your seedling compost with tails down. Should show their heads within 48 hours.

Grow Well.

Hi and welcome to the site biggrin.gif
If you're having problems germinating it's most likely to be the quality of the seeds.
My 80 year old mother had two cannabis plants growing in her garden last year. They were underneath a bird feeder - the wild bird seed must have had hemp seed in it (well that's her story anyway!).
If my mum can manage it, I'm sure you won't have any trouble if you follow the sensible advice that the good people have given you here.

Good luck with your growing,
YD.

I've had trouble germing in the past, what I've learned is the method doesn't reall matter, what's important is to keep them warm and damp, if they aint warm enough, they won't germ whatever method you use.
Not much help, I know, but it's warm & wet that germinates best, beyond that just pick a method that best suits your style of growing.

is that why you germ them in you underpants ,warm wet and plenty of poo to feed them

One small point to bear in mind Yorkshirelass is although you want the environment for your beans to crack to be nice and warm as well as damp,be careful that the temp isnt too high as that can prevent them from germing as I've found to my cost. But that was a long long time ago!

I try to germ at 21-24c. I do'nt know if that's the text book temp but I get very good germ rates at that temp. yinyang.gif

have you tried soaking them in a bowl of water overnight with a lid over the top ?
i think it softnes the shell up and makes them easyer to pop out ?
let me know how u get on....

Hi, i'm new to growing as well.

I'm in soil, so just banged the seeds in wee tray, into a propagator, into cupboard where boiler is and they eventually popped up. guitar.gif

good luck with your grow and you'll get all your questions answered if you ask yahoo.gif

'nae sweeties for shy bairns.........' as ma granny used to say. wink.gif

Welcome, I'm also new here. A thick layer of paper towels on a plate, placed in a warm dark space always works for me.

welcome yorkshirelass

i find just putting them into there first grow medium whether its rockwall cubes or just normal pots of compost straight away (after a little soak to rehydrate) is the best method- in my opinion i had so many troubles doing them in paper towels etc but now they come through great

hope this helps
