Hi guys, thought I'd share a tip with you that I've been using for years to stop adverts being displayed whilst browsing wtc. It stops about 90% or so of the advertising from reaching your PC, and thus from being shown and bugging you.

It also works for Window$, Linux, Mac, whatever.....

There is a file on your PC called HOSTS, and it basically is a list of address translations that your PC uses when it looks up a net address, like you know, www.google.co.uk is really 72.14.221.104. Your PC normally uses something called a 'DNS server' to do this, which is online and normally provided by your ISP. However, first of all it checks the HOSTS file on your PC, to see if it's there, first.

Now this *simple*, easy-to-use trick is this - you can download a HOSTS file that's continually updated with addresses of all the nasty site that are used by all the major advertisers for their advert displays, and banners, and it basically redirects them to 127.0.0.1, which is *always* your PC.

In other words, a web-page goes to fetch the advert to show in a box, or a banner, onlt to be told that the address of the advert is 127.0.0.1, which is your PC, where the ad doesn't exist, and therefore will not show.

You can download the HOSTS file here: http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.txt and read all about this here: http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

The page explains where the file is on your PC (diff versions of Window$ have 'em in diff places, in Linux it's /etc/hosts). This trick is *brilliant* - I've used it for years, and hardly ever have to put up with adverts, etc.....

Hope this helps..... guitar.gif
