So, normally I'm not to bad at this but I've got a feeling that the fans broken and the guys sent it wired up wrong to keep me from finding out. I've tried a couple of times, but its got me perplexed.

Its a 200mm Ruck fan by the way.

Upon opening the fan there's a plastic block that holds the wires from the fan (where you connect the wires from the plug). There's 4 holes for connection in this block, 1 marked earth, another L, and the other N. All fine until we get to the 4th one, which is unmarked and has a single blue/turqoise wire coming out of it.

So from left to right on the plastic block we've got the

Earth, with a yellow and green wire going to the fan, all seems good here

Live, this has that single turqoise wire coming out of it, although the unmarked slot has two browns so I guess these are muddled up.

Neutral, this has a blue and black wire coming out going to the fan, which seems fine.

And the blank one with the two browns, so lets call it the live.

So all in all it looks like I've got

1 Earth,
2 Lives,
3 Neutral's

Coming out the plug is the standard E, L, N, so I can connect the Earth and Live, but with 3 neutrals I can only connect to one of them in this plastic box (If your still following).

Any help would be fine cos I just don't understand how this could work even if the last person had it working (which I'm doubting more every second).

Cheers!

Reading through that still looks confusing so on that plastic block

-------------------
E.....L......N....--
-------------------
1.....2......3....4

1 = Earth Wire, all good.

2 = That Turqoise Wire.

3 = A Black & Blue Wire.

4 = 2 Brown Wires

Dont know if this helps, but....

yeah it should help shouldn't it, but unlike that fan this one has 6 instead of 3 wires coming out, this is why I'm so confused.

according to that the extra wires are

2 brown and another blue.

If the blue's live, then it'll be that single turqoise one I think, the neutral would be the black but I've got 2 wires going into that connection instead of the one shown and this leaves me with 2 unused browns.

Going to give it a short but my hopes are extremly low, I'll get back.

Cheers!

haha, wired it up, plugged it in and heard a noise from behind, eyes lighting up I spin round to see my fan in motion.

Not to be, just a car starting outside rofl.gif

I just can't get my head round this unsure.gif

HELP!!!!

Right, following the wires from the capacitor I've got a brown and blue.

Blue ending in a double connection with a black. Brown ending in a double connection with another brown.

The black next to the blue goes to the actual fan, along with the other brown.

With this all wired up including earth, it leaves me with a free connection to that turqoise wire which also leads to the fan.

So Brown and Blue to the capacitor

&

Brown, Black, Turquiose and Earth going to the fan.

I'll try wiring it up without the turquoise and get back.

The turquoise/blue on its own is live, black neutral. Do not connect live to the cap/winding loop through.
CrazyCris
Could you explain that abit more about not connecting the live to a cap???

I'll try it that way but I still have wires which shouldn't be here. Feel like smashing it in some brainiac inspired way. cry.gif

Its pretty simple, its like it says, live goes to the blue, what you call turquoise, that is one side of the winding.

The neutral is connected to the black/blue commoned from the cap and the other side of the winding.

The two browns are the other side of the cap and a centre tap into the winding, they are not for you to connect to, the terminal is just to connect them together.

The earth is to earth the cap caseing and any other metal bits.

Make sense???????.

CrazyCris
Right, I've opened up a 150mm LTI I've got and had a look, and they're totally different so its no help.

If anybody's got a ruck I'd really appreciate a quick look inside so I can see where mine's different.

In the LTI its confusing as well, but not that bad because there's 3 places to wire up and you have 3 wires from the plug so straight foward in that sense.

Its got 4 wires going to the fan, but only 1 to the capcitor (live) which then leaves it as a blue, and joins the other 3 cables leading to the fan (Earth, Neutral and a Black which comes from the live aswell as the wire going to the capcitor).

I'm gonna have another ponder and get back soon

Cheers!

CrazyCris
Makes sense now, I'll give it a shot and get back, much appreciated!! yahoo.gif

Well, I finally got it working, it was as simple as oldtimer said, apart from if I'd been using a plug with a working fuse I might of found of sooner pinch.gif

Cheers!
