never did get round to downloding torrents , untill today that is ive downloded bittorrent & im trying to download a film ive been wanting to see ...atm i have 4 of the same film dunno really what im doing there in my bittorrent but are 0.0% downloded

What im i supposed to do leave em untill they download ... will they stop when i turn off my comp or not ?

you have to sort them by seed or seeder,this is how many people are sharing it ,the higher number the quicker download ,for instance if you put in miami vice 2006 or something very popular it will have various large numbers along side it whichever with the most numbers is (usually) the best ,hope this helps!

I've never understood why it is called torrent, I tried it once, never again, I've got broadband, why should I wait at semaphore speeds?

when they kick in and start it will say 22 days, then as the minutes progress the speed will go up.

normally movies come in at around 22 kbps, depends on who you are getting it from, 100 kbps is the best i've seen a movie come in at.

albums usually well over 100 kbps right from the start.

stuff from servers come it at upto 1000 kbps

if you just clkicked download then yes they will stop when you switch off the pc and they wont start again (unless using a torrent client like bitcommet (this is like a kazaa / limewire prog but for torrents)

when you click on the torrent link, click save as, thens ave the .torrent file on your desktop.

then double click on the file on the desktop to start the torrent.

when you switch off the pc it will stop but when you switch back on just double click the torrent again and it will resume from where it left off.

this is handy for cancelling a download so you can use your internet at full speed then starting the download again when you arent browsing

if u have broadband and use torrents theres no reason why you cant get exceptional speeds.

I download torrents at an average of 250k a sec takes me on average 4 or 5 hrs to download a 750mb complete film.


If you just jump right in and get yourself a torrent client like azurues and try download a film chances are you wont get very far anytime soon as it is a little more complex than that to start off with.

NAT errors and closed torrent ports will mean slower torrent downloads, using WIn XP without tweaking it a little will mean slower downloads.

NAT errors : Unless you port foward TCP port then torrents wont connect properly to other seeders and leachers..... port 6881 is the basic torrent port that needs fowarded from withing yer router/modem config {www.portfoward.com} should explain the process for each individual router {NOTE static IP section is not really applicable to most users as static IPs tend to cost extra from yer ISP, if ya have one use it by all means if u aint got a clue leave it alone} Once proper port is fowarded then things will improve dramtically

Win XP users : Win Xp Service Pack 2 comes with a system wide limit of 10 simultaneous TCP Connections this aint very good for torrents and should be patched to a higher number about 100 should be fine, but unless its patched it will effect downloads as the Q'd tcp table will become full and grind things to a halt

Your obviously not downloading the right torrents, a torrent with lots of seeders with fast connections should usually download at your broadband limit. Try and angle around for an invite to a private torrent site, these sites usually have dedicated uploaders who usually have gigabyte+ connections.

With my 4mb bandwidth I can generally get a full divx movie in about 40 minutes and albums at around 3 minutes!

if you think 100kb is a lot then you should get a new hard drive...

30k is good for a movie, but you gotta remember that as peeps finish downloading the speed goes up as there are now less of you sharing.

don't worry about leaving the torrents running after you have donwloaded, it eats your resources does uploading, and you upload whilst downloading so you've done your bit at the time. (uploading / sharing is where the law comes in, not downloading)

torrents are a two way street, we all share parts of the file with eachother.

i usually run no more than 5 torrents at the same time or they start slowing eachother down.

this is all down to your pc's hardware and stuff, i know more than 5 torrents affect eachother on my pc.

frinstance i will start 5 movies downloading then go to bed, all 5 will be finished when i get up usually.

with movies the KVCD ones will fit on a normal 80 minute cd regardless of the films length.

avi's need to be converted using nero to burn onto dvd.

if it is under 90 mins long then nero will overburn it and it will fit onto a cd, no need for dvd.

Ive got a 56kps dl limit a speed test on the net said this, im using a router and am on wireless so i dont have super quick broadband....

The best speed ive ever got is 70kps but not sustained......ive configured the router and get green lights for firewall/nat ok dht and all that stuff...

Is there anyway to make my dls faster or like the test says 56kps is my limit?

thats down to your broadband connection.

when i was on 512kb / half meg broadband the fatsest i would ever get was 64kbps.

this was from servers and stuff though.

i am now on 4 meg broadband and my usual speed from the ubuntu servers is 440 kbps

some stuff i can get 1000kbps but that is direct ftp from a software server.

make sure and cap your upload speed as well as the total number of uploads at any one time.

it bugged me for ages that my upload speed was faster than my download speed.

reason being that if you are donwloading from a slower user, but you have a relatively free connection then others can upload from you quicker than you are downloading the file.

so if you cap your upload spped to less than your max download speed you should always be in front and you shouldn't be bogged down by loads of uploads preventing your download from coming in quick

its a bit ciomplicated, boojum has seriously tweaked his torrent clients, if you search for other torrent threads he has written a pretty good guide to max powering your torrents

if have a dvd burner and download kvcd versions possible stick 6 movies on the one dvd easy enough.

The stand alone player needs to support .mpg files though or it wont work away from the PC

simply use ISO buster to crack open the ISO image of the KVCD extract the mpg file {best filter raw mpg frames only} and burn a series of .mpg files onto one dvd disc, hey presto 6 750mb movies = 4.39gig and fits on one blank dvd, will play on pc and on stand alone players that support the file types

does depend a lot on yer net connection so if its slow then not much room to do anything

disable dht might increase yer speed lot trackers dont like it

also configure the trackers ports if u aint fowarded them 6969 and 7000 azureus uses for HTTP and HTTPS

i also disable UPnP and the distributed database as it slows things down

but keep a record of what u change incase yer setup dont like it, torrents really trial and error til u get it how u like it
