Hi fellow growers and stoners. yahoo.gif
Some of you may know my old posts from OG. Mostly Microgrowing.

Now this combines what I've learned from microgrowing so far with some goodies I was building for my currently suspended server case, you can follow this thread here:
http://www.uk420.com/boards/index.php?showtopic=57437
Some of my plans and thoughts of ventilation and lighting in small cases are mentioned there. I may explain and introduce them briefly along with this thread, but the long version you'll find there.

I 've worked overnight for some days to finish this project finally on the next best occasion to flower a bunch of cuttings (and one seedling) in a micro SOG, yes, 6 Plants: 1 Ogerskush, 2 Bubba Kush Bubbleberry pheno, 1 Bubba with a very lanky OG like pheno, 1 S.A.G.E. - the last one - and finally a accidentially selfed Northen Lights, a Dutchpassion Oasis excatly, that's the seedling. The plant where this seedling comes from produced about a dozen seeds by self pollination.

All those plants were put in their finally 3 L pots and went in 12/12 flowering mode under 200 W cfls (4 x 50 W) on friday last week. The flowering time is from 8 pm - 8 am. I flower them in an used Ikea kitchen cupboard I found in the waste a few weeks ago.

H x w x d is 75 x 60 x 30 cm from the outside. The cupboard is on wheels from one of my server cases. The height inside is 70 cm sharp.

A thorough cleaning didn't made it nicer, but less dirty. 34.gif pinch.gif The first sign of quality was discovered: I-K-E-A...!!!
[attachmentid=88948][attachmentid=88949]

The door goes off, the holes at the back are lazily closed with pasteboard. Hey, I can still poke or cut through to put this whole thing at the wall back again.

The inside is sealed with silicone.
Yuck! wacko.gif
[attachmentid=88950]

After that, I applied white foil to the walls inside and self adhesive aluminium foil to the hood. Some additional pieces of wood were mounted there - needed for fixing the lights later. The white foil really makes a difference, wasn't as much fun as painting - arrrgh! nea.gif
But much more faster. I cut a mat for the bottom. I didn't put the white foil at whole bottom - you can clearly see a difference there! But thinking Ikea (the plastic mat was as well an Ikea leftover I could grab at a friends household) - don't put any redundand stuff where you don't need or see it - I left the bottom simply out. spliff.gif

Some thoughts about venting:
Intake: two times active with an lighttrap with two seperate chambers. One fan cooling the lights, the other blowing over the canopy. I later on added a second passive intake at the rear bottom (not on the pictures), baffled and with the option to be made active if needed. All wires come out of that passive intake. It is furthermore closable with a piece of wood, if needed in winther. (more infos later)
For exhaust a: filtering chamber.
An auxiliary fan blowing used air in, that is sucked through a removable carbon screen. I can put additional carbon pellets on top of the screen if smell is an issue.

Hopefully this will not end up in an endless monologue. 34.gif
I was still tired from my nightshifts, but it was crucial to get everything up and running before my missus returned friday last week. In fact I finished everything (including repotting) half an hour before her arrival (she is away during the week, when I have my jesters licence lol.gif)
She did not approve, but we agreed in that point, that I'll turn down my running two cabs before moving in Nov./Dec., what I was actually planning anyway and I might be allowed to run a second veg cab with a 65 cfl. (I mean somehow I have to achieve that she buys my strategy, what she actually did. Hey, victory. I turned my 65 W ghetto PC down, that was a thorn in my side anyways and it was no longer needed. But for that I was able to trade my Ikea with 200 W in, lol.gif, relationship politics)
I guess she couldn't resist the nice craftsmanship and the cranky charme of the Ikea.

Anyhow back on topic.
Preparing the spots for drilling the holes...
Can you spot my toe on the first picture? - toe porn, lol.gif.
[attachmentid=88962][attachmentid=88963][attachmentid=88964]
Finally done, this was made in two steps. The big hole was tough, lucky me, I had a Dremel. yahoo.gif rofl.gif

[attachmentid=88965]
Intake front, once again. I used a very powerful PC fan on top for cooling the lights and a supersilent Papst for blowing over the canopy here. Note the little drilled holes for wiring. Once again, the Dremel was a good purchase. Some fans used here were as well collected from the waste of other ppl. Fans are expensive, even the crappy ones for PCs. I found a mini tower one week ago, I went quickly back home to grab my cordless skrewdriver, to remove the fully functional psu from the case. I kept the skrews as well.

[attachmentid=88966]
Exhaust: Mounted, the most powerful PC fan I could acquire so far, was as well found in the waste. On top of the case, the filter box with a 5646 Papst made entirely out of metall (I mean the fan). This thing can move 160 m^3/h. Ok I bought this fan, but it was an occasion.

I fabricated a dimmer around the wiring to let this 18 W beast run at 3/4 of it's power - it's less noisy this way. To reduce vibrations I used plastic skrews or at least plastic shims to uncouple all fans. This is clearly an improvement.

The exhaust filter thingie was completely glued together, no nails or skrews used to build this out of crappy ply. Basically the ply was glued around the carbone filter cartridge for aquariums. The cartridge is used as screen. I still can put more carbone pellets on it if needed. Smell is not an issue atm, so the box is running without filter. The filters are fairly cheap and easy to get. < 3 € a pair, so replacement is cheap.
[attachmentid=88967][attachmentid=88968]
aventinusdampf
Some of the clones, waiting for me to finish this. They were in my PC case when the picture was taken.
[attachmentid=88969]

Next step: low voltage wiring of the fans. As mentioned earlier, I wanted all cables to exit through the passive intake baffle at the back. Two power adaptors were used for that and a bunch of banana plugs. The auxiliary exhaust and the canopy fan are constantly working. The exhaust is more powerful, it generates negative pressure that guarantees that the air is blown through the filter (when used), so no smell can evade when lighting is off.
[attachmentid=88970]

Bloody wiring. Be careful folks, it's high voltage this time. My cup is still on the floor (I guess it was my third tea att) and a hell of a lot different skrewdriwers by now doh.gif .
My plan was here to achieve only a single cable to the timer where the cupboard is running. Hence the sockets. Everything that is triggered by the timer is switched by a 16 A relay. I don't know whether I can ruin a timer with 200 W cfls, a power adaptor and a 18 V fan, but I don't wan't to try. The relay was quite expensive, considering it's value, but nevermind. All the cables are heavy duty and are made to support 3600 W.
[attachmentid=88971][attachmentid=88972][attachmentid=88973]
aventinusdampf
This was the long night from thursday to friday, I got only 4 hrs of sleep after that. Wiring continues... These junction boxes are really cheap, but always too small, lol.gif.
But finally success.
I spilled the light on the floor. pinch.gif doh.gif
I don't have pictures of any further wiring, but it was a bitch, believe me.
[attachmentid=88974][attachmentid=88975][attachmentid=88976][attachmentid=88977]
Finally, sealing tape around the box, door back on, shit, , tired as I was, I had to detach one junction box to mount the door back on it's place and then to re-attach it. 34.gif doh.gif
My little daughter was in sweet slumber at that time and didn't notice any of daddys problems he was struggling with.
Aditional shutters keep the door nicely sealed. "SNAP!"
[attachmentid=88978]
aventinusdampf
Since temperatures were ok after an hour running or even more, I decided to put the plants straight in. Then I went to bed and fell asleep immediately, while the box was nicely humming along...
[attachmentid=88979][attachmentid=88980]

Friday morning - yawn!
Temperatures were quite ok, this box was designed, when temps were much higher, so there are still some capacities left. I was quite busy the rest of my little spare time at that day to finish the passive intake baffle and transplanting the plants into their finishing pots. They did look a little droopy after a prolonged lighting session (they had 22 hrs instead of 18) and after repotting they did look even more droopy, despite the seaweed and vitamis I've given them. Too much light maybe (200 W instead of 130) and 2700 K, not 6400.
Howewer they don't look droopy at all now.
I just finished the baffle in time, mounted it, cleared the room, put my tools back and switched a spare timer to 12/12. Lights went out at 20:00 in the box.
The yellow baffle is closable with a sheet of ply, see the slot? That's where the ply goes in. No sealing tape around the baffles - I wanted to proof how clean I built this. Only very few light is evading out of the small gaps and is negligible. Note: I'm building my parts freehand over the bathtub without electric saws. I only use a Dremel, cordless skrewdriwer and a electric drill. I however do prefer my handdrill or the Dremel if possible, I hate the noise that those machinery makes. I might get some sort of hobby room after moving though 13.gif .
[attachmentid=88982]

I had only very few time to give the rest of the flat a quick cleaning, that was ok, because I was very very busy with serious work (not the box) before I took my vacation, so a thorough cleaning was scheduled for this week. The Ikea cab was just finished 20, 30 minutes before my missus went back home for the weekend.
"What's this for a construction?" She asked. "That's ahhh, errrm.... the new Ikea growbox, lol.gif. You know the rest.
Stealth? Never heard of. This looks like the work of a mad scientist.

[attachmentid=88983][attachmentid=88984]

It is sooo coool. guitar.gif It's fairly quiet. The big exhaust fan is made precise and smooth, the airflow of the fans on 24/7 turns it quietly all the time.
So, thanks for reading all this. Now you know all of the history about that Ikea box.
We'll see how it flowers them ladies inside.
aventinusdampf
The picture was taken this morning, I have to say, I'm fairly satisfied with my work so far. Capt'n Jack Sparrow himself looks 24/7 after them plants lol.gif.

Exellent DIY skills and Drawings. Looks a great little box. yahoo.gif

Thanks FMB, I guess it should be ok for that micro SOG. In future I may stick with SCROG though.
Burns
Looking great there,nice work buddy cool.gif
aventinusdampf
Thanks for reading, I consider doing a diary abut that micro SOG. In the next couple of days one or two additional plants are moved in, since I'm succesfully cloning despite the now colder temperatures. I'm doing some new strains from seed to select a few. So it's only a question of time until I run out of space once again. lol.gif
Now putting them outside wouldn't be very sensible as well, unless they really shoot in their vegetative stage.
MigrowGardener
Real nice

Something like that would be ideal in some space I have under my desk. How about the carbon filter? Does it keep the smells out? Or should i say in? I'm gonna be doing a grow myself, Ive got the lights, waiting for seeds and all I need now is somewhere small and stealthy to grow them, probably scrog from feminised seeds. I used to live with a friend who done some growing, his house stunk. Smell is my main concern but i dont really have the budget for a carbon filter, so am looking for ideas to build my own. I saw one of your other posts about a filter made from a 90 degree piece of pipe. did you ever get round to making and testing it? Looks like you got some nice ideas, would be nice to hear if they all work.
aventinusdampf
The new design works, I've already tested it. I may have to install it soon, the girls are getting smelly. Kush is hardcore, some of the heaviest stinkers arund. But the more stench the better for me lol.gif. You may have however to change the cartridge after a month or apply additional pellets on top. You'll get them at petshops. I did make the pipe thingie, but without that 90° piece (see the pictures) and it worked very nice. But the sponges I used for that are far more expensive. For small grows I guess the Liberty cartridge is the way to go - the filter is the screen already.

lol.gif, I've never done a diary here, on OG yes. I had a server case with 200 W inside, but it's now only used as a propagator now with only 65 W inside. And please don't ask about yield. The Kushs are poor yielders, I'm aiming for quality. I remember 5 g stashed from my Ogerskush that kept me satisfied a whole week. I try to pull abut 2 oz from the Ikea with future grows and using SCROG though.
For you to enjoy, some pictures from the old PC case grows. The 200 Watter added some nice warmth to the room during the cold winter 2005/6.

Cool grow diary, especially like the pictures. Look forward to seeing more. I've started a B&Q version just for vegging and am quite impressed with the flourescent lighting - plants seem to grow tight with short nodes.

Interested to see how your homemade carbon filter works out when you hook it up later on.

I'm back. Was away in beautiful Maastricht. Scored some nice, average and top hash/weed along the way.
Found two bagseeds in bricked jamaican grass, the best weed I could get there. One might make it. As the ppl. selling weed there say: the names don't say anything, I wasn't particular impressed by the Jack (probably 'dro the one I had), the Super Skunk was above mediocre, the Mexican Haze not so impressing, but the shrooms especially in combination with the bricked jamaican got me tripping top notch. There was a shop selling Kushage, but the queue in front of the dealer was too long. I wasn't particularly impressed by the Nevilles Haze I had for breakfast, so I thought I just try to get another Jamaican in the early morning hours, when the dealers are relaxed and the shops aren't crowded. Generally the imported weed is still better than the Nederweed, but harder to get.
The jamaican always keept me on the laughing side, when the plants grew eyes and were decaying in late bloom there when I was tripping through that beautiful town. I came about a quarter that looked like a charmed garden. There was one place though that was giving me some kind of disturbing waves. Strange energy flowing at that particular spot. I wonder if there sth. strange had happened.
Along the way I scored Blueberry, Flo, Blue Moonshine and Bubblegum seeds at the Dutchpassion seedbank. Crossed the border by bike the next day and mailed them to me. They arrived today.

I only had to water three seedlings in my propagator and to supercrop two plants in the Ikea, to keep the canopy even. The two Oasis plants have done quite a shoot. The lanky Bubba and the Ogerskush at well.

I did some math and I spent 200 - 250 € rough on the making of whole Ikea cab. It's hard to calculate, because some parts are collected from the trash, some are bought in bulk, brackets, cables, plugs, ply, skrews...
How do you calculate paint? Some things I had already and some tools were purchased for jobs like this as well. Sockets are expensive, so I try to collect them from the trash as well, same with fans (now - I've learned my lesson, now I dismantle PCs from the trash). I could however only use the purchased sockets for the lighting of the cab, about 6 € each. Plastic screws are fairly expensive as well.

Another figure are the Watts per square metre: The 200 W cfls would translate to 757,5757... W/m^2 but that's hypothetical I guess and gives you only a rough estimation.

Temps are running about 25°C and that's pretty perfect, plants love it. The whole thing is getting smelly, so I might put in the filter soon.
friendly electrician
some good work there smile.gif

not thought of a fridge freezer though? there not great in winter, but very handy in the hot weather

you seen a chip shop counter pie warmer? ive seen one used for cuttings, and the next job is fitting it with a peltier heat pump. thats the cooling device from a 12v fridge. a £35 b&q fridge has a 50w unit in it. thats a pair of compact flourescents, and a bit more smile.gif

The cupboard is freaking huge when looking at the jungle inside. lol.gif

The supercropped plants have straightened during my absence, so it was necessary to snap them again, to keep low. Only plant that bushed out remarkably was the S.A.G.E. That however was obvious and intended, having seen that plant growing naturally (at a friend who got a cutting from me).
[attachmentid=90457]

I may take a picture from the cupboard tomorrow. Still have to download the Maastricht pictures from the card. Hopefully the plants don't look too snapped then. I really dislike the look of supercropped plants the first couple of days. When the stem heals however it looks at least interesting if not cute with the bulked up swelling where once the snapped stem was.
aventinusdampf
That's just an actual picture. The supercropped plants are straightening up again. Tomorrow I might rearrange the plants, but for the moment I just let them undisturbed to heal.

Supercropping means bruising and snapping the stem. This will heal. In my case I won't tie down the plants - or at least not yet. So I'm lazy snapping them. They recover fairly quick, making it necessary to snap several times - sometimes.
CupboardBound
Ok cool i think i see in your picture that you dont actuly snap off the bent bit, but just leave it hangin whats the reason for that? why not snap the thing off and throw away.

It'll heal. The plant recovers. The stem remains in an angle - mostly, the plants straighten more than I want to. I only want to keep the canopy even, I do however not want to throw away the top bud. Some say it's beneficial, because the healed stem is stronger. At least it's beneficial for me, since it's easy and I don't have to tie the plants down. whistling.gif spliff.gif
aventinusdampf
See? The lower budsites catch up. With some plants this can even result in some bushing up.

you're sure you don't mix things up? Most cfls cannot be used with a dimmer. However my timer triggers a relay and that switches on the lights. I'm really satisfied with them. The swedish brand is called lumine. Their website enercomp[dot]se.

I guess this cupboard will do best in a couple of month with a single plant inside, scroged and in a 14 L bucket (that I lately acquired).
danny-warnard
They also mention not to be used with a dimmer.
I guess I'll just add a double plug socket to my relay instead of the single I have now.

Good luck with the scrog grow. Been wanting to do a mircoscrog myself but I'm running low on weed so maybe next year.

With a relay that switches the power and the timer switching the relay it should be ok. You might visit a electric store for advise. You can tell them you're building a new hood for your terrarium. It's quite similar to growing.
