Full Version: Power Cable Has Been Hacked Off Way Too Short

Just got an Acoustic extraction fan back off of a friend and the power cable has been hacked off way too short. So I've got to extend the cable by about 10 foot. Can this be done safely with one of those 'plastic blocks with screw clamps in' or do I need to take the fan to bits and totally replace the cable? unsure.gif

[attachmentid=87224]

Also what's the coo with the black wire? Can the Black and Brown go together as Neutral into a Systemair speed controller? . . . And then from the controller use just 3core cable to the plug?

(Lecky is a bit of a scary mystery here.)

yer the plastic block screw on things are fine imo if you dont have crimps, as to your second question, my guess is that the black is a second neutral? dont quote meh on that tho.

edited to add: black wire could be anything lol.gif can u see where it goes to on the fan side.
The_Preacher
ok check this, i think the two neutrals will be gong either end into your variable resistor in your speed controller?

Nice.

Thankyou Pimp, most helpful gentleman. guitar.gif
I will check it out. yinyang.gif

buy an extension cord and one male plug.

Place the male plug at end of cut wire following directions and wireing diagram then plug in extension cord tape together and shes as good as new.

Or lob the female end of extension cord then wire directly to fan probally a bit more complicated and may need to open her up. go the first idea.

Cheers for the suggestion SCp. Gonna try the block n' screw route though, if I can find a block that will take 4 wires.

Think I got mixed up with the brown wire. There is L1, L2, L3 holes on the speed controller, all for Live connections I guess.

So if the Blue wire is neutral and Brown is live, Brown goes to L1 and Black to L2
So whats a phase . . . I mutter inanely.

Wiki say "Things get slightly more confusing with 3 phase equipment as black changed from being a neutral core to being a live core and blue changed from being a live core to being a neutral core"

Guess I need to hunt down a similar 4 wire cable if I do this ere phaser ting.

dikki
isn't 3phase 315v or something?
TightBud
3 phase has been dropped from 415 to 400v

usually with 3 core the brown is live (common)
black is switched live (sleeved brown to indicate it is a live at some point(switched)
grey is neutral (sleeved blue to indicate neutral)

and the cpc (earth) sleeved green yellow

this can sometime be confusing

as others may use another colour(usually black) as common

there has been a BIG problem since the colours have changed

no dissrespect but the "old skool"sparkys are still pulling in a "red"...when its actually "brown"
dikki
ta tightbud, knew it weren't 'normal' rofl.gif ph34r.gif stoned.gif
P@ppa
careful guys
when dealing with three phase, L1/BROWN, L2/BLACK, L3/GREY, NEUTRAL/BLUE.
if you have a three phase motor in your fan you will need a three phase supply( not normal for a domestic property ) or a three phase converter. if you don't have either of these, the fan won't work.

looking @ the cable on your pic im pretty sure that its single phase.
BROWN/PHASE, BLUE/NEUTRAL, BLACK/SWITCH, GREEN-YELLOW/EARTH
TightBud
put some pics up BG

so we can see what your looking at

i really dont think what you have requires havin the road dug up to get a 3 phase supply into you house
TightBud
i do agree p@ppa

but of late i have seen L and also L1 then neutral and earth

one is usually the permanent and one the switch line and can vary from manufacturer

I like that, sounds good P@ppa, cos I a'int digging up no road!

I haven't used this fan for a year or two, but it worked fine then. If only I could remember what I did with the black wire. Something very simple probably, like nothing. mmmmm.

Maybe L1 is for Black / Switch then, as tightbd suggests?

I'll see what the manufacturers say.

Feck I'm not smoking enough pot. Need to sleep get my dream fix now.

Thanks for the help folks. yinyang.gif

It could also be a twin speed fan?
If so, there would be 2x live wires

have you got a multi-meter?

know anyone who has one?

you'll need to check the neutral against each of the L's in the hope that it gives 2 different readings for resistance....

come on sparkies, help a guy out.... smoke.gif pinch.gif ph34r.gif

Think I'm sorted on this. I'll be running the fan permanently, no humidistat attached so no need for a switch wire. I'll lose the Black wire and just use Brown, Blue and Earth. (Tightbud spelled it out to me by telepathy.)

I'll let you know how it goes.

Thankyou all yinyang.gif

wot model make, and manufacter is the fan? the black wire could be for an over run timer,start/run capcitor or a second winding to give you 2 speeds

Hi Themadhippy, I know its a 200mm fan!!! There is a sticker on it that carries the info:

Chaysol v370013 made in Spain.
UPA-200 C. Acustica 180w 2p
v772005
isl.cl.b ip44 capc5
230v-50hz 0.7Amax
wt40c 2000rpm

It all means very little to me!

I think it was bought at Grohell quite a while ago along with a klimavator. Probably the same ones they still do. (200mm Acoustic Fan (695m3/hour))

Will be using it with a Systemair speed control as the Klimavator went missing and I didnt like it no-how.

Ta

make the connection in the fan with connector blocks

Ok, my friend rang the shop the fan came from, and it seems that the external capacitor is missing!! 34.gif
He's going to try and find it and if not he will buy another capacitor for me.

Apparently (Third hand here), the Brown wire goes to the capacitor, the Black leaves it and goes to live, the Blue and Yellow/Green as normal.

One day it'll work! Got an Lti extractor too, so if I can't get hold of a capacitor I'll be using that. Noise is an issue here though.

Thanks again folks
