i have my fan on a speed controler and works well but on full and sounds like ther a jet in my loft smile.gif

so thought i would try make a baffle this is prototype smile.gif
could only find small length of pipe but good inuf to see if it would go together

starting with 4 inch pipe (soil pipe)
2 buckets 10ltr
bart
drill 4 inch pipe

iv only done a few it will take time to do lots smile.gif

i may get some 5inch pipe for the finished work to match my ducting

bart
cut holes in buckets

bart
pack with sound insulation and get the duct tape out

so do u think it will work smile.gif
herbal geordie
looking good mate,i made one myself with 4 inch and 10 inch cardboard tubes, works a treat guitar.gif

Bloody good idea mate wink1.gif looking forward to seeing if it works.... I use a makeshift baffle, it's shit but does the job in the space I have

peace,

You deserve one of these..... IPB Image
bart
thanks peeps smile.gif
bart
hi

mk2 smile.gif

wonted to use 5 inch pipe but not wonting to spend smile.gif thought could i use ducting !

so wot i did is streched the ducting and glued timber laths to make it solid sort of smile.gif
then holes lots of

then put the buckets on the end and more glue and laths to stiffen this up

bart
next 2 more buckets cut to bits smile.gif more hot glue

all to do now is fill with rockwool seal up and test
Blabblabberbab
Noice wink1.gif

I reckon I'm gonna have a crack at one of these mate wink1.gif - I'll wait until you test it to see if it cuts the mustard whistling.gif - I've got some spare ducting kicking around so I was thinking the same thing this morning before I saw you'd changed your design.... great minds and all that wink1.gif

keep us posted on how it turns out smoke.gif

B ph34r.gif

'edit' - where are you gonna get your rockwool from? - I was thinking of bulk buy cotton wool as a cheap alternative, but I dunno how much rockwool costs anyhoo....
bart
hello smile.gif

well i used loft insulation (its like rock wool) had some here didnt need a lot
iv just filled it not packed it tight

iv given it a quick go on the end of the run and it does seem to work
going to move fan and ducting wednesday to try proper (day off \0/ )

plan is new box for fan and shorten ducting as much as possible

my intake is almost a straight line into grow box and the run less than 3 foot
in a box and i can hardly hear this 1 have to put ear to the box smile.gif to check if on

bart
ok fitted it and it does work and made a box for it smile.gif

now the sound is the same full on as it was when half speed smile.gif

how can u tell if fan is ok !
evey now and then it humms and vibrates then stops ! this is with it on 1 speed low or high
comes and goes

the box insulated with kingspan then loft insulation round the fan b 4 closeing up smile.gif

applause.gif Good work mate yinyang.gif
bart
thanks smile.gif

Top job buddy wink1.gif

I'm doing a blue peter carboard and sticky tape cak-handed version of the silencer as we speak - just wanna see how much difference it makes before I do a pro wood jobby whistling.gif already lashed out my hard earned £3 on a shag load of cotton wool for the baffle, I'll try and get it in tonight wink1.gif

B ph34r.gif
bart
ta m8 smile.gif

it will make a diff smile.gif

i think my carbon filter is makeing the noise i dont like pinch.gif

going to look at that l8tr at light on make sure it not touching anything
but it could just b the air resistance when sucked through !
Blabblabberbab
Mate I've just finished my baffle - less than a day to make, total cost £3.... IT'S FUCKING BRILLIANT!!!!

The drobe is almost silent yahoo.gif yahoo.gif yahoo.gif - The fridge is louder! - top idea that was bud wink1.gif

in place, along with the spanking new mum/clone box wink1.gif

Good Job.

Isolate sound by eliminating contact by fans etc. to hard surfaces. Car floor mats, doubled up work well. Bubble wrap is the best sound insulation for floor situated fans.
For slung fans, I would advise 'cargo nets' or multi bungees. Silent running. Works for me.
tom o'rite
Nice work! I like it. If you can't afford / don't want to buy soil pipes etc then ask your local carpet shop chappie for some of the cardboard tubes carpet comes on.

top job guitar.gif

dont u just love making things on the cheap smile.gif
bart
hello

this is to add that iv got it quieter by not useing the mounting frame that came with the RVK fan
and useing just bunggies round the fan

and i found a coupple of holes in my ducting used magic duct tape to fix smile.gif

so now that dam droning is gone \o/

Bart good work professional looking.

Pack that fan box with doona or insulation material, my first box looked like yours with foam, with extra insulation i can barly hear motor. only air noise to worry about.

Bob da builder! wink.gif spliff.gif
bart
hi

thanks snap smile.gif

yep packed with insulation not much sound now and baffle does work no more woooshhh sound smile.gif
CrazyCris
I've got an 8 inch ran and like you say its the air whoosing about that makes the really loud sound.

Do you reckon that putting a bend in this would make it better??? If you don't have a sliencer its usally advisable to put a couple of bends at the end so the air dosn't come out of fast.

I'm gonna give it a shot today, get back to ya with what I come up with.

Cheers!
a_lover_not_a_grower
absolutely beatiful, i love this. i wonder if the effect on reducing noise will increase if you increase the length of the tube?
bart
hi

i think when u put a bend in it the fan doesnt move as much air

and makeing the baffle longer does reduce noise

looking good smile.gif

pipe is free from the gas man that keeps digging the road up. the water board use thick stuff aswell. As you used duct through the middle, you hardly need the holes. make sure its kept tight though as smooth walls mean less turbulance/noise. hang vibrating fans on bungies, but try to get it so the bungie is partially stretched. you can buy it from b&who down to 5mm, or use elastic from a knitware shop. it the bungie is stretched, then vibrations will move it, which is vibration absorbtion. if however the bungie is nowhere near stretching, then its simply not elastic, so wont be anything like as effective.

thin mdf is a good noise blocker. cardboard is not so good(unless its thick like carpet tubes). the outer tube need not be round so using any sheet material is possible almost.

large roof plants(machines! lol.gif) sit on concrete blocks that have a greater mass than the vibrating parts of the plant. this means the plant cant shake the building 'cuz its bigger than me' lol.gif. think slabs. under pumps and that they will work wonders.

yahoo.gif Inspiring , thanks .

The noise my fans make is not a problem as it's in my loft and can't hear a thing when the door closes.... the air rushing into the inlet pipe is another story, I've got it next to the soffit board (the overhang at the end of roof) as it needs to get fresh cool air from outside to reduce bloom room temps enough, but the noise of the air rushing in is getting me proper paranoid as it's the only thing that could get the neighbours thinking..... my outlet fan is hooked up to a carbon filter so doesn't make much noise with the air coming out.... if I put one of these silencers on the end of my intake pipe would that work?
I've packed a bit of rockwool in the end which has reduced the noise a bit but nowhere near enough 34.gif
spark1
My simple solution was to stick an old ladies legging over the end of the pipe, leaving it loose like a windsock, as air passes out, it hardly makes a sound. Mine wasn't that loud to start with however.

nice 1 bart, made a home-made baffle myself after reading your thread, put my rvk in a carboard box surrounded with loft insulation, works great.
cheers m8

I've used wadding material from an oil spill responce kit got it from ma work whistling.gif

I believe that most vehicles/machinery have one of these kits very near them some where whistling.gif

great stuff comes in A3 size maybes 10mm thick stack em up and sit fan on, smoke.gif
W@terBoy
thats an excellent build Bart.........

I purchased a 150 silencer from uk420 store at a really good discount, and im not disappointed smoke.gif

my only small gripes the weight.........and your blue peter speacial solves that problem.

Is there an optimal amount and size of holes put into the pipe.
bart
hi

lots and lots of small holes i think smile.gif

acoustic ducting has loads of pin prick holes
olietrendkill
At risk of sounding very stupid, how do these things work, i mean obv it cuts the sound down, but how?

Instead of the noise bouncing of the walls and coming out of the end pipe the sound goes through the holes in the inner wall and is absorbed by the filling (rockwool, cottonwool, wirewool, etc). Mine works a treat, I also have my fan built into an mdf box which is filled out with foam. Not a peep can be heard just the odd whoosh of air when the door is open.
Bud-e-Licious
Hey Wasabi!

are you talking aerodynamics there? ie; do you recommend two fins that go inside the baffle and act as some kind of barge boards? Sorry boys F1 speak and i don't even know what im talking about!!!? whistling.gif

also if your using barts silencer on the outlet pipe saw a slit to about half way down the pipe and put a peice of cardboard or similiar in the slit, then two inches further along cut the same type of slit on the opposite side of the pipe and put some cardboard or similar in this act as a baffle and cuts the whoosh noise down even further!

really? brilliant, I'll give it a go on mine... I wonder if there is a 'perfect' distance to set the blades apart? also, do you think this might work if you put it right at the front of the intake? as this is the pipe that is causing me noise worries (where the air rushes in)
yinyang.gif

thanks for the superb baffle idea Bart....have you cut down your CF noise? I'm having a lot of trouble with the whoooshing of my CF too.....
J4mie
looking good m8, thanks
bart
thumbsup.gif
CF not much of a prob for me ,my growbox is made of insulation so helps keep noise in smile.gif ,just got to make sure nothing touching the walls

make sure all joints (pipe joints smile.gif ) r air tight ,small gaps in connections can make noise
growguy yorks
very nice......now if onlyi could find something to get rid of the bloody whooshing from the actual hole to the outside world that my rvk150L1 makes on full speed
Weedling
I am a litle confused with the design of these things....
Is the end of silencer blocked, so air is forced through the sound proofing material?
Or...
Is the end totally open, letting the air gush through un hindered...

If the latter, then surely all you need to do is add a piece of acoustic ducting no?

Looking forward to building on of these myself, my new 150L1 is like a fkn turbine... i am getting paraniod ! so please someone clarify smile.gif

Weedling.
Blabblabberbab
both ends open thumbsup.gif same principle as acoustic ducting (kinda) just a shit load cheaper wink1.gif
Weedling
Hurrah!

I will get on the case today and post my results, Thanks! biggrin.gif
Weedling
Used Jim Jims idea of using a mesh rather than drilling holes and ended up with this....

Used loads of zip ties to to join / make the cylinders, made it just a little wider than my ducting so the ducting would slot into it.
then wrapped loft insutlaton around it, tied it on with string, and finally covered with some plastic laminate flooring underlay that i had lying around.

Seems to work well! thanks for the inspiration smile.gif

Weedling.
