I have 2 plants in soil about 2 1/2 weeks old, about 5 inch tall, i was wondering if i could move them to a hydro set up and if so how can i do this without damaging the roots. I have a nfl set up with 600w sodium light, i have got 2 plants already in rockwool about a week away from putting into this system. i was going to do 2 in soil and 2 in nfl just to see the difference but after more thinking i might as well put the all together if possible. I germinated them 2 weeks apart that is why they are at a different growing stages (also i had not got the set up completed yet) If i can transplant them what medium do you sugest to put them into to stabalise the roots in nfl?

Hi Cf. smoke.gif

Does the soil not get washed away and wreck your submersible pump?

my cuts are done in a small pot with a mix of compost vermiculite and perlite ,by the time there ready to go in the nft they have a decent root system that binds the mixture together ,i have used this since i started growing in hydro after reading molyneauxs book on the subject .....if you go to nutricultures(makers of the gro tank) site you can still see thats the way they tell you to plant out in nft today.

i've used a variety of pumps and never had a problem with muck clogging them up ,i run an eheim 1048 (?) now which has a big filter ...30 something quid and still going strong after 12 years wink1.gif

Thanks for the reply Cf.

I didnt know that. So the little packet of soil n perlite will go some way to stabilising the plants. cool.gif

I read lots of things about lack of stability in nft and the need to use yo yos later to hold up plants.

Think I will try a diy dwc bucket as my first hydro adventure in a few months. wink1.gif maybe nft later.

Roight! Cheers for that link, bookmarked. whistling.gif

i've done it before with slightly older plants than yours m8

all i done was take them out of the pots and gently wash away all the compost that i could and popped them into rockwool wink.gif

I have a mate that decided to go from pots to hydro. Only he couldn't get the soil out of the roots so he cut them off! rofl.gif
