I'm STILL trying to sort out my internet. I've given up transferring my bulldog account (and am now actually in the process of complaining about them the the regulator). My only real options now are either BT or NTL, but BT has shitty usage limits. Have been looking at NTL, I'm not interested in their TV cos the only digital TV I would want is Sky Sports, and their TV doesn't include that. But they've got a 10 meg broadband which I quite fancy, it's got usage limits too, but it's summat like 70 gigs a month, and I can't seem me using all that even downloading movies, so I was wondering if anyone else is with them & what the service is like. With the 10 meg broadband and the basic phone package it comes in at £37 a month after the first 3 months, which is only £7 more than I was paying Bulldog. I know there's that carphone warehouse one that's advertising free broadband when you sign up for their phone service, but it's only just up & running so I'd wanna wait to see how it goes along for a few months before considering that. And I'm assuming that cos NTL isn't over the phoneline, their 10 meg is actually 10 meg, instead of the usual 'up to xx meg depending on yadda yadda' you get with broadband via a phone line.

Waddya reckon ?

I like it for the unlimited connection. Mail goes down now and then but not regularly enough to be a problem And they charge 50 quid for a call out so don't.

Thought about changing a couple of times but it does what I want it to do and, on the whole, ntl haven't been bad service wise, but don't tell them I said that. They react well to a good moan, I've got a half priced phone line atm but I'm trying to moan my way up to half price broadband. whistling.gif

I suppose the best thing to say is I never usually have to think about it, 99% of the time, it works.

Hmmm well i have ntl always have had since they laid the cables in the area so I have no experience of anyone else tbh, did used to have a BT phone line but they are madly expensive compared to ntl calls ( or were at least)

I pay for the medium speed package (is it 750 or summat package?) but have had it upgraded to 2 meg for free. I do get loss of internet sporadically, once a month or so and have always assumed this is when my ip addy is changed or summat techy that I dont understand, but then I do always unplug my modem at night and I shouldn't whistling.gif

I got ntl when It was Cambridge cable Who I was Working for at the time. I had it free. as job perk.
Been with ntl since r4edundant and pay £17.99. For 4meg. This is because last year I had major row with them and said ******** and******* you and the horse you rode in on. Got 6months free and upgraded sy no extra charge.
Dont know about download limits as I have never Had that problem. I can acsess my ham radio sites for packet radio and I am on that a lot. Had a spell of trouble with the service early last year that had gone on for several months.Hence the row.since then a odd day now and again but greatly improved. The phone service sucks.
If you have a tv card in your machine You can split the signal down and use a splitter to get tv signals If you do make sure the active side is on the modem or it wont talk. one side of the splitter is "live" other is passive dixons, currys, maplin have the splitters ask for a sattelite one.

I use Blueyonder (which is the same difference) and have done for the last 18 months and I am suprised to say that they are ace. I initially signed for a 750k connection and it has been upgraded twice so is now 4MB. I do a lot of downloading from news groups and always get 400k+ download speeds.

One thing that I have heard of NTL is that they suck if you have a problem.

I am now moving to an area without digital cable and am going to have to take a gamble with the BT/ADSL route which is starting to look more expensive and with more restirictions than cable. Its the unlimited downloading but with the 'fair use' policy that is irritating.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH taz.gif

Just been to apply on the NTL site, and they say broadband isn't available at my address mad.gif

Wankers. I was in the laundrette round the corner on Friday, and the guy above was getting NTL installed, and I chatted to him, he was getting the 10 meg. Why the fuck can't I get it, just round the sodding corner.

AAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHHH taz.gif

Dunno what I'm gonna do now, I aint going with BT, their usage limits are a fucking joke.

blueyonder 2 meg no probs now, but originally had some access probs which turned out to be my puta manufacturer (tiny) put a load of generic network cards in, these things have mac addresses or sumfink,on the ethernet side everybody in my area had the same mac address = first on gets the i.p. address everyone else is denied. sorted by swapping ethernet cable for usb which had a unique mac address on that bit of the network card. no noticable speed difference and 100% access now.

Once you have the BT line in you can take your pick of the other suppliers. I'd say look for unlimited connections rather than speed.
PhantomGrower
yeh dude not the end of the world
u can connect throught the phone line using a variety of companies
my friend uses tiscalli and is mighty happy with it

im on NTL 1meg. never had a problem

probably upgrade when i get a second pc and a router
chewitts
was using BT but they capped my line and sent me a bill for 316gb (bill was 1£ for every gb) of usage for 2months whistling.gif or i could leave BT without having to pay the bill ...quess wot i chose smoke.gif

I'm with aol stoned.gif at the moment, 2meg unlimited connection pagage, i can honestly say its never let me down and i also got a free wirless router from em yahoo.gif

I picked aol over a few other isp's simply because they dont block any ports (like p2p, torrent apps/think they do block a mail port though!!...talk talk do this type of thing to allow for more even spread of their speed(so they say) but they lift the restiction after midnight..or uses FTP wink.gif

Best bet is to shop around some more, read the small print as best you can and then make your choice from the 5 best deals you can find for yourself.....#

good luck mate....

Might be worth calling NTL and checking...when I check my postcode it says I cant get 10meg, but i've had it since about october now and it rocks...

As for general service, im normally the first to whine but in all honesty I have never had any problems at all with NTL, initial install 3-4years ago was a breeze, and they've upped their speeds about 4 times since then, and the 10meg is just amazing now, downloading at 1.2MB/S and (shitty on a worldwide scale still but good for the uk..) 64KB/S upload...plus a load of free crap every month soon apparently (30 legal music downloads/video streams and the like) biggrin.gif

i've been with NTL for years... started with 1MB, then 3MB & now im on 10MB.

daytime & evening I get speeds around 800kB/s - night time I always get 1100kB/s stable.

service is good, never had any problems, apart from when they do maintenance, but thats like once a year for few hrs or so... which is nothing.

I leech about 150GB+ monthly, never got capped or cut off.

I upload about 1-2GB daily.

NTL in my eyes, are good.
NTL TV is crap though, sky digital im on.

hope this helps

Last month i exceeded the 75GB cap on NTL`s 10MB package by over 120GB(my total was 195ishGB) without any problematic correspondence from them!
They are doing away with the cap on that package & increasing the speeds on the 2MB-4MB, as of the 1st of june anyway. biggrin.gif
