Hope someone can help. I've just got my new broadband up & running, and it's suffering the same problem my last one had. Works fine while I'm at the PC, but if I turn the monitor off to leave it downloading overnight, when I turn it on next day the broadband connection has died about 5 minutes after I turned the monitor off. I've disabled all standby/screensaver/power saving bollocks in windows (XP), but turn the monitor off, connection dies. WHY ????? Seriously pissing me off, no point in bloody broadband if you can't just leave it DLing, and I can't leave the monitor on when I go to bed cos I live in one room. What the bloody hell does the monitor have to do with a sodding USB ADSL modem for fox sake unsure.gif

I'm running windows XP, my modem is a speedtouch 330 & I'm with bulldog broadband (but it also happened with my BT voyager modem on BT broadband). What settings to I need to change to allow me to leave it unattended without it dropping, with the monitor on OR off ?

Cheers.

Oooh, I'm annoyed cos I should have 3 movies to watch today, but instead I've got 3 part files the same size as they were last bloody night. 8 meg connection's all well and good, if it actually stays bloody connected mad.gif

Just a thought Boojum,

have you got a time set for disconnection on idle?

If you right-click your internet connections icon & go to properties. Go onto the 2nd tab on the top, OPTIONS... it should be on there. Make sure it's set to NEVER

Hope this helps

Never heard of a VDU effecting a computer - I have a module in computer hardware and I have never heard of it. Put a duvet over the screen is all I can think of or maybe get a cardboard box and do a bit of blue peter magic and make yourself a screen baffle or blocker (how exciting will that be)!

So much for that module I got.

The only other thing I could think of was a power surge when you switch the puter off - do you have them into the same socket on an adaptor? maybe uif you use different sockets it will work - I am clutching at straws but you never know.

OF course! well done dikki. yinyang.gif

edit to say that the 'puter would go off too then, no?

unsure.gif Can't see a powersaving thing in the speedtouch properties (lol.gif or a USB monitor for that matter, I get the speedtouch properties up by right clicking the icon on the taskbar)

On mine i've got a power management tab, I get to it by clicking the green usb systray icon then selecting speedtouch 330 and clicking properties

Ok - theory

Go to control panel - system - Universal Serial Bus Controllers -

Then do the properties of each one and go to power management - and untick - Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.

It could be that your modem is connected to a hub which cuts power when the computer is not being used.

Give it a go.

These replies also remind me of the thing that asks how long you want to let your computer run for while a key has not been touched - can't remember where it is, I think it is in settings - this may be the same as above but I think it is a different way of doing just about the same thing - worth a try also I think.

Edit to say mr b's one sounds better but still....

Maybe there is a setting in your BIOS that is wrong - I have not got the memory any more to tell you exactly what to do but to get to the BIOS you have to keep you finger on delete and then switch the puter on and it will go into the BIOS when you do this. From there you press the tab that is most likely to relate to the problem (you don't use a mouse in the BIOS) - as long as you do not change anything willy-nilly then you should be ok. Just remember what you changed and see if it works, if not go back in and unchange it and go onto the next likely thing.........good luck, time for me to go.

Cheers for your help everyone smoke.gif

Mr_b8man, I reckon you're a genius, (could be kinda what you meant as well ergot8, I just didn't have any USB icon anywhere, even in the systray), allow windows to turn off this device box checked for all USB ports (WHY THE FUCK???? fucking microsoft wank, why does it need to be able to disable the fecking USB port without fecking asking me, grrr). Unchecked, truned off monitor, seems OK.

Nice one smoke.gif Cheers guitar.gif
