Encrypt your e-mail with PGP.
So secure even the CIA can't crack it.

Heh He!!

If you belive that your a Daily Mail reader!!!

- Seriously though, there is no such thing as a system that the authorities cannot crack. Bear in mind who Invented a) The Net and cool.gif e-Encrption.

Echelon is here, its reality and we all have to get used to the fact. There is no such thing as a private conversation accross wires..

We lost all semblance of "Net Freedom" - of which I was an advocate for 11 years, until September 11th we were winning the ground.

One of the biggest casulalties of the attacks, was Net Freedom.

There are tools out there (commercially) which allow all traffic in packets to be decrpted and viewed en-route (like a phone tap) and this does not require: a) a court order cool.gif probable cause, etc, etc.

I'm in no way exagerating this, I work in IT Security for a UK Government Contractor.

So always be aware of the fact, that you ARE being listened to.

PGP is breakable - its difficult but not impossible.

512k encryption is around, but the US military created the source code. If you think they would not have a backdoor...... your crazy.

all encryption can be cracked but not all in realtime which in reality it must be to be of any use for 'eavesdropping' - using pgp is gonna be secure enough for the vast majority of us for the same reason that shopping on the internet is 'safe' - for someone to find out what you are doing they need to know where the data is going from and too, at what time etc.  tracking the encrypted data down tends to be harder than decrypting it  :stoned:

High all,

Don't despair - uncrackable encryption is on the way (I think)!

A new encryption strategy has been developed by a professor at Harvard which should be really uncrackable, based on a program which taps into the flood of data from the internet, TV transmissions etc. at predetermined times to generate encryption keys which (unlike PGP) are only ever used once (a "one-time pad"). Therefore there is no pattern in consecutive messages to be cracked, and no way that even getting hold of the program and the rules used to generate that key would help - unless you stored all the data transmitted everywhere in the world, all the time.

That's a lot of data - I think even the NSA would have problems doing this!!

Smile, you're not on camera...

PS. Apologies for getting all nerdy, but I thought the article sounded relevant. It's on the New Scientist web site but in the archive (password protected) - PM me if you want me to forward you a copy...

You can get PGP for mac here it has a superb redunant hard disc wiper >> MAC PGP

A big importer in the Fl had his puter taken for examination, the feds and DEA had it for over 6 months and still couldent extract any info to bust him or find  his contacts. This is why the our Gov passed the RIP bill.

:D Hello Everyone, hope you are all ok :)

I have just looked at this PGP thingy and i cant seem to find a XP version? anyone any other ideas on firewalls?? not something i had really thought about?!  :stoned: i suddenly feel like i am being watched !! eep! Its just my cat glaring at me because as far as she is concerned if i am awake i should be either feeding her or fussing over her and stroking her little furry tummy   i love cats

I have a large amount of comp. security and maths background and I can safely say this is bollocks. No offence man, just I feel this is fundamentally unsound advice.

The algorithms in PGP are under constant review by academics, computer security professionals and likely governments. True, governments have far greater resources to apply to attempting to break these cryptosystems but nonetheless when an algorithm undergoes years of cryptanalysis by academics and is considered fundamentally secure you have to put some measure of trust in that.

When an algorithm is secure that means there is no quicker method of cracking the message than trying every possible key in succession hoping to hit the right one, typically you'd expect to hit the right one after trying half the keys on average.

For a 256 bit key this means (2^256) / 2 = 2^255 which is roughly 5.8 x 10^76 (580000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 give or take a few) keys you have to try before hitting the right one.

Of course longer keys are possible if this doesn't seem secure enough to you, however given that the number of atoms in the known universe isn't much bigger (about 4 x 10^79) I wouldn't worry too much about shady government agencies cracking your keys so they can check out those growroom photos you sent your mate in that email.

sorry to say this is true, when I was learning comps ,years ago, computer weekly , was one of my favorite mags-sad but true- a storage medium came out that no one could break into, and the ministry of defence wouldn't allow it...

hence I agree with the quoted statement above.....
