Ditto. In many cases, it's people's body language that gives them away. People who look nervous (fidgeting, shuffling, biting nails, constantly glancing at exits, etc.) tend to attract attention. There are also a couple of "types" they look for - young Americians on a six month visa, who have popped over to 'Dam for a weekend often produce a result, for instance. They may also glance through the passenger lists to see if anyone has any previous.
If it's of any comfort, an old sound engineer mate of mine used to do a lot of conference work for Customs & Excise. Apparently they rarely, if ever, bother to put the sniffer dogs on luggage or people from Amsterdam flights, because it / they often smell of dope smoke anyway, which generates a lot of false positives. Just about all luggage is X-rayed now, though, so
don't put any in your bags, keep it about your person. Also, they don't generally give a toss about people with an eighth or two stuffed down their undies for personal use (too much paperwork for a tiny result) - it's "dealable" quantities they're really after.
I've only ever been stopped twice. In both cases I'd made an attempt to look tidy for the journey - had a shave and worn a decent jacket, trousers, shirt and tie. It could have been pure coincidence or maybe I just looked "out of character" in those clothes. Three days of stubble, bloodshot eyes and my loudest tie-dyes have never raised an eyebrow and I've just sailed through.

so long as you bring back 35 grams or less, it will only result in a confiscation and small fine, if caught. over 35 grams and you get nicked.
True, but it will also go on record and could well bring up a flag against your name on future journeys and result in delays elsewhere. In the end you have to ask yourself if the potential grief of getting caught is worth it for a few grams of smoke. After several "successful" inbound journeys I decided it wasn't and that every occasion I made it through OK was bringing me closer to the one where I didn't, so now I don't bother any more.
