I was potting on some clones a few days ago when I noticed this C99 plant with 3 nodes per leaf node.

[attachmentid=35912]

Nothing really unusual about that, except that this next plant is her sister clone, and this has the usual 2 leaves per node.

[attachmentid=35913]

I checked the mother and another clone taken from it and they were all normal. So out of 1 mother and 3 clones, one clone shows whorled phylotaxy and the others are normal.

I thought I must have made a mistake, so I rechecked. Out of 5 seeds, only 3 germinated; one was a runt and got binned and another was a male that turned hermie and got binned. There was only one C99 that survived and from which I took all the clones.

I thought whorled phlotaxy was inherited, but how can this be the case if only one out of 4 genetically identical plants has show the trait? unsure.gif

I also have a Durban Poison plant with 3 leaves per node, so I'll be watching what her clones look like when they take.

Just bumping this thread in case anyone has any detail on whorled phylotaxy.

Hi hairy face biggrin.gif

All i know is it is a genetic traight but is common in clones and more predominant in indica. Then if it is genetic how can the cloning part have any influence. Does a plant have a "tendancy" in its genes for whorled phylotaxy with certain types of stress ie cloning "triggering" the response? 34.gif

Any well informed geek would be most welcome here spliff.gif

Thanks for any info

if u have seeds that are mutated and u cloen from that seed the cloen will always be mutant it will always carry mutant genes indentical to the mother

and inherited smile.gif more likly than enviroment if it was enviroment we would hear of it mroe often smile.gif

I took 3 cuts of a whorled plant, 1 kept the trait and 2 grew out of it.....:|

That's what I was wondering. I grow in the loft with a fan heater to give the temps a boost. However, the temperatures can change quite quickly between a low just as the heater thermostat switches the heater on and a minute or 2 later when the air is warmed up again. Maybe this has something to do with it? Also, to have the trait appear from plants from two seeds from a couple of dozen in total I reckon is quite unusual.

There must be something environmental about this whorled phylotaxy if the 2 C99 clones are different, and the temperature issue is the only one I can think of right now.

PD: I see what you are saying, but there must be more to it than pure inheritance as all clones and mother plant would have turned out the same. I think Loveweed might be on the right track - something inherited that still needs an environmental trigger.

Muppet Paster: that's interesting about growing out of the trait. I suppose I have the opposite - a mum without the trait and a clone that's grown into it 34.gif

I also read several times that plants that have this whorled phylotaxy give worse yields than normal plants. So far the ones I have look just as good as the normal ones, so I'll just keep them going until harvest and see how they do.

Ta for the comments guys smile.gif

When cloning I find the occasional clone has some early growth wich is mutant like it is a "whorled phylotaxy" but they tend to grow out by node 7 or 8 13.gif
