Well as the title says, I have to move some plants today, as they are perrenials, they are dormant at the mo. Can they be replanted straight away or is it a bit to cold to do this safely??

1eye.gif I really don't want to loose these plants.

Any advice would be helpful.

ive just been to place a buddliah into a place for palnting by able bodied digger

my garden grows well eo

move em before they sprout or just after ....seems not to do any harm

The trouble with moving stuff outdoors at this time of year is that you'll be shoveling frozen earth, or very near to it, back into the new hole as you backfill it.
Can't you wait 'till spring? unsure.gif
nigfis
Oooh.

How about putting them into large pots and over-wintering them somewhere frost-free......?

Well that was what I wondering myself....I have to move em today as the shed is going up on top of them otherwise cry.gif I wondered if they could be stored over winter....the bulbs will be, but not sure about the roots of the bleeding heart or the astilbes unsure.gif

Don't overwinter Astilbes EO.....They can be left in the ground and even split during their dormant period.
Dahlias need to be lifted and stored if you freeze up in winter but down south they still keep popping up every summer(fingers crossed.)

I love Astilbes....Dwarf ones especially!

Hope all goes well with the shed erecting!

Thanks for the responses. wink.gif

I dug them up and will be splitting and re planting them today....the ground is no where near frozen here, in fact it's all boggy and wet at the mo.....they'll probably rot instead of freezing lol.gif

Shed went up with little probs, I'll get a few pics up as the flowering room gets built.....cheers Bu

Good luck with your seeds crowman, what seeds did you plant?

Yeah RAZ no choice really, it's the only bit of the house I could refuse access to the landlord and workmen....oh yeah and the kids lol.gif

I know it's not idea to grow in the shed....but choices are a bit limited 34.gif

We have had plants vegging for ages waiting for a flowering room to be built....should have em in by the end of the week 1eye.gif guitar.gif

Can I ask what strains you have planned to go in? Are they all going in at the same time, or at different periods unsure.gif

Well I have germed some NLxBB/afghani but they were all mutant and have struggled a bit. And we also have germed some c99. They will probably all go in at the same time as we have no more room for them in the wardrobe.

Hi again EO,

... About the new shed.....

We (me 'n Raz) got hold of some of that reflective stuff that's meant for behind the radiators in the house and stuck it to the roof before putting the felt on. It's been an enormous help in keeping the temps steady inside. That felt gets damn hot in summer and radiates a great deal of heat to the inside.
It cost about £6 if memory serves, but the help it's been is worth many times that amount.

Do you mean the silver dimpled stuff with polystyrene on the back? cos we have a roll of that here. guitar.gif

We are going to insulate it all inside, including the roof.... but we'll put some of that stuff on the roof too if ya say it helps!

Cheers for that tip!

Hi EO,

I hope it all goes well for you in the shed.....Screwfix direct do some stuff that is 4mm thick like bubblewrap covered either side with foil.
Come to think of it most B&Q type places do it.

It is claimed to be as efficient as 55mm polystyrene at insulating.

ps...Astilbes love it boggy! thumbsup.gif

EO, I suddenly had a thought about this thread that I feel I should share.

Even though you say the soil is very wet and boggy at the moment, you should still 'water in' the plants that you have moved, this will settle the soil around all of the roots and stop them getting damaged by air pockets etc. that will hold the frost.

Best wishes with the shed.
