*EDIT*

see page 2 for more info

OP

this is how i solved mine, cheap and easy,

the first thing to do is mark a 3" circle on top of your lamp
and drill it full of hole's (the more the better) and mount a
4" computer fan over the hole's and screw it to the metal reflector
make sure it's sucking air out not blowing in

a glass shield is very usefull if you use this method

the pic's will explain the rest

hope this help's
Oldpink
and add a 4" extractor to suck the warm air out the room
most of the stuff needed is available at B&Q (ducting, fan's etc)

the 4" fan's are available from Maplin's, Tandy or your local
computer repair shop should be able to help you

this setup can drop 15 - 20 deg off the temp's in my growroom
with the glass shield's installed

cost for the fan's, duct's and glass was about £80 all in
glass £8 per lamp (glass bought from fastlight)
duct £6 per 3M (B&Q)
fan  £ 16 (B&Q)

wow...
Im impressed, do ya need protective clothing to enter your grow room.... :D

:alien:
Oldpink
no but factor 15 sun block is advised
there's now 3 aircooled lamp's in here now ( i removed the open reflector)
the room is just under 16 sq ft and working temp's are about
25 - 30 deg running at night 8pm - 8am light's on

OP

Another quality post with a good piece of advice.

Whats your full set up? Lights, ventillation etc? It looks like quite an operation.

How do you grow? Tall, short, sog, scrog etc?

Chip
Oldpink
Hi Chip

the room in these pic's is running 1200w (3 x 400w conversion lamps)
there's 2 x 8" intake fan's for the room 1 x 8" vent as well
as the light cooling
there's also a 16" fan to move the air around the room

i run 4 - 8 bubbler's in here depending on the strain
there's 6 afghani #1 in just now @ 10 day's 12/12

room 2 is a bit bigger, 20 sq ft with 2 x 400w conversion lamps
they have still to get there air cooling (very soon)
again up to 8 bubbler's and 3 x 6" 270 cu/m/h fan's ( 2 in 1 out)

the room's alternate one at night the other during the day
i have a seperate veg/clone room with 4 x 32w floro's
and a 400w halide if needed

all plant's are grown natural no topping or training max hight is
about 40" from the top of the pot's to the light's,
but i can get to within 5" of the glass shield without burning
the plant's

Great thread OP.

air cooled HPS for much cheapness and I have seen these babies in action, but OP's set up is a lovely one.

see ya

i dont know how OP finds the time to do any growing

great room OP and K+ to yer , ooerr

Am i right in thinking that the fan needs to be blowing air into the light area? Not sucking the hot air out? Ive got a little confused smile.gif lol easily done
Tom
Sucking out.

faustus
thank you for pinning this.
sorry all for my unneeded thread.

the diy air cooling reflector is just the trick for me.

how did you attach the glass to the reflector. i am worried mine (came with ecolight 1000w) is too flimsby.

tjeers for now and really thank you

here's a pic of mine similar in fashion but totally home made to fit my space.

Bugger me LSD,
Is that a 250watt HPS with enviros?....Are they blue or red spectrum lamps?
Is that a PC fan sucking air away?
I like that alot!!!

Bu.
strangeplains
hi oldpink wink.gif what a marlellous idea, that will save a couple of hundred quid cool.gif
Living Societies Dream
no it was a 400watt hps with 2 125 watt red envivo's.

changed things around now so i might post my new hood i made afew weeks back.

check for updates

Hope no-one minds me using this thread as its been inactive for a while whistling.gif

Hiya, i thinking about modding my cheapey reflector into an aircooled one.
Its just one of those dimpled steel sheets bent into a curve.

[attachmentid=43848]

What im thinking of doing is adding two peices of wood to each open end, and installing a pc fan to each end, one intake, one exhaust. the inside of the wood will be coated with mylar.

[attachmentid=43849]

SirBob
what is was then thinking of doing is adding a plate of glass to the bottom of the reflector, held by right angled brackets.

[attachmentid=43850]

I would then add ducting going to the loft, with a third computer fan in the loft at the ed of the ducting to strengthen airflow.

This should hopefully allow a much shorter distance from light to plants, strengthen the ballast, cool the room and make the day and night temps a lot closer.

I think ive got it sussed, getting the fans from ebuyer along with a PC Power supply unit.

The only thing im not sure on is the glass. is there a special type of glass that will be totally transparent and wont shatter at high temps?

Comments, critisisms, suggestions and rantings all very welcome biggrin.gif

Sounds good to me.. Was thinking of a similar plan..

Cheers Pickle
nigfis
This works for me...
It doesn't actually remove heat from the growroom, but it does suck air from above the lamp area and down onto the tops of the plants where all the transpiration occurs.

Hiya biggrin.gif Looks like we had similar ideas smoke.gif

wow, did u diy that? looks well pro.
im now thinking that if i have an extraction from the lamp, ill need a carbon filter aswell. im now going to route my extraction through the lamp, so it goes:

filter
ducting
lamp
ducting
fan
loft

im gonna save the fans for a nice little veggie box.

[attachmentid=44382]

this was made out of the side of a cooker. the tape is special metal ducting tape which provides a good seal around the glass

cost = £6 for b&Q bolts n brackets
£5 for glass
SirBob
ok ive almost finished myaircooled lamp. annoyingly ive had my cam stolen so i cant give pics of the construction. sad.gif What ive done is modify my cheapy reflector (the one that is just a piece of steel sheet/ tin foil wink.gif and turned it into an enclosed aircooled reflector with intake and exhaust.

what ive done is put mdf ends on the relector to make it rectangular. these ends were then sealed with shitloads of contact adhesive and bathroom sealant to make it airtight (more on that later).

ive then cut a hole in each end of the MDF for the intake and exhaust. i added ducting, and sealed to make airtight.

after this was done i painted the MDF white for reflection, and redid all the seals again.

Then i got a piece of glass cut to fit and placed it under the lamp, completly sealing of the lamp.

i have only put the piece of glass on at the mo, with the light upside down.

im running the light and the extraction to test that all works fine. im using 6mm glass so hopefully shouldnt get to hot and crack.

havin dinner now more update in an hour. cool.gif
S2001
guitar.gif What kinda glass did ya get Bob? unsure.gif yinyang.gif
SirBob
just regular glass, 6mm

ive finished now, ive fillered (sp?) all the cracks and edges, braced the glass with right angled brackets and hung it up.

as i said its got a intake and exhaust, so the air is sucked in through my carbon filter, goes through ducting, goes through the lamp, goes through ducting and then gets sucked out by fan. this is why i needed it to be airtight. ive had the light on for bout an hour, and ive turned it off keeping the fan on to test the glass. all looks fine.

ive now got it on the plants in the room, goin to dee what find of temp diff it makes!!!!

ill try to get some pics up soon as im really quite proud of this 13.gif seeing as the last thing i diy'd was a box at school! got an E for it aswell!!! cool.gif
S2001
unsure.gif think ya need to get special glass unsure.gif I think normal glass will reduce the Lumens, am not sure unsure.gif yinyang.gif
SirBob
i tried looking for any kind of special glass on google eg holticulural glass, ultra transparent glass etc but couldnt find anything so guitar.gif
kyphi
normal 6 mm will do you fine m8 mine has been going for a year now. same stuff.
good job there sbg. may she grow you heavy buds.

as far as i know there is no dif between types of glass apart from laminated which might affect the ouput of your lamp.
as long as your bulb is far enough away from the glass n you are cooling it, it should be cool. i've got a little comp fan blowing on just the glass to keep the ambient temp of it down. it's rough science but it works yinyang.gif
SirBob
cheers kyphi, ive been testing my room, now with the pimped out reflector the temps are 3 oC higher than the intake temp as opposed to up to 10 oC

i think this is a well good idea to do, and cost me about £15 to do.

haha beats payin 80 squids for a supernova!

Im loving the Bodgemaster, might build one of those for my grow. Need to keep those costs down... lol.gif

heres my diy air cooled reflector smoke.gif
eek
dont mean to dragg this post up- LSD's enviros with that 250w look very scorched, i had thought of this, but just having a enviro at the bottom of my box gets hot. and dude its brown ?! spliff.gif

Im planning on doing a similar idea with the intake and out take.
This is also good if you are using CO2 and dont want it getting sucked out too quickly.

BUT
i have one problem, outside the grow room gets hot too, which is where the out take goes,
and where the intake gets its supplies.

I cant duct outside through a window, or maybe i could...But how do you guys vent your out takes?

Im thinking my best option is to (as im renting) to buy a new bedroom door, have an extractor on
that, hopefully cool air will come from beolw the door.
Then when i have to move, ill put the old door back on.

What do you think?

Hi ppl, quick question.

What thickness glass did everyone use and what type?
I got some 2mm glass for mine and it cracked through the heat within 20 minutes.

Admittedly, there wasn't much air moving so I might put 2 exhaust fans on, but I was just lookin to see what the people on here used.

Cheers

hi all been thinking of making one of these myself

do you think thinish wood would be safe to house a 400 w hps ?????

I'd say its the same as the problem I'm having. Keep a high air flow so the inside temp doesn't get above 70 degrees and you should be safe.
Paper doesn't burn on it own (no ignition source) till over 100 degrees I think

Hi mate, i grow in a bedroom. I have a closet, and intake from the bedroom, and have the exhaust going into the attic.
you dont want the intake and the exhaust in the same room, because it will recirculate the stale air. wink1.gif

Hi mate, i found 6mm glass works fine. i got mine cut to fit from a hardware store, and it works great. i have a Ruck 125mm fan blowing the hot air from the light, and it really hepls to stop the temps going sky-high. yinyang.gif

I used 10mm MDF, which wont burn too easily. TBH i wouldn't use plywood or anything, just to be on the safe side. Make sure you coat it in a (non flamable) reflective material to stop the wood from getting too hot too. Aparantly you can get that dimpled aluminium sheeting that is used in reflectors from B&Q.
friendly electrician
try not to chop the hole right over the lamp, or even at 90* to it. the reflector in thies areas is doing a lot of work. its better to draw the hot air away and out the shade in the lamp holder area usually.

i wouldn't use normal glass, if it dooms over your buds....
pop down the wholesaler. the front off a low bay fitting will cost £10 and is for the job.

I'm going to copy a jetstream hood at my local comprehensive's night classes, when it opens again in september.
I'll say i'm making a hood for my eldest daughters aquarium wink.gif

I made myself a neck-jig there.

http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Fretting_suppl...es.html#details

I saved loads of cash by copying that, and i use it a lot too.

I've got some great pics of how the air is pulled over the bulb and out,and in the growell mag they have a hood that does it the same way too.

I'd make one now but laughably i can't find anywhere that sells sheet metal !!!

I know that sounds daft, but i haven't been able to find anywhere that sells it in S-O-T.

I can get horticultural glass though,is that what i should use then ?

I don't understand quite what you mean by wholesalers ? Electrical wholesalers ? or Growshops ?
If so i avoid mine at all costs, very dodgy geezer.
