After sexing my seedlings and culling the males i was lucky enough to get 3 female variations of Janis. Over the course of the last six months I have been able to test each in order to find out which suits my tastes.

This is only based on what I think ! It’s also aimed as a guide into identifying what phenotype of Janis you may be growing. This is by no means an exclusive list; it’s just based on what I have worked with so far. Also note they were grown out under a HPS bulb. I’m sure you’ll get something far better by adding in a metal halide or enviro-light.

There are a good few other people whom have grown out Janis Special and had good results. Cheech, Skinny D, Elzzar, Nigfis to name a few. I think that their opinions and experiences would be worth hearing. So if anyone out there has grown out Janis and if you have something to add then please do.

Janis 4 (short)

I’ll start of with the variation I call Janis 4. Grown out in this thread along with another Janis.
And more recently here

The shorter, stockier Janis has a more bush like look to it. Shorter spacing between nodes and an abundance of leaf. This plant seems to love to branch. Slight leaf twisting during growth. Mother is shown here :
Kafka
Only real thing you have to watch for is that the plant soon becomes weighed down and the main stems begin to bend. You really need to support the plant or prop the branches in place.

Trichome formation is very thick and the buds have a glassy look to them. Nice lavender / berry smell when the plant is brushed. Finishes the earliest of the 3 at 60 days. Looks like this when ready …

Smoke report for Janis 4

I have allowed a 6 week cure on this. Smoke is berry tasting and rather nice. Hard to describe but it’s very floral. Not harsh, even when not cured for any length of time. Taste really came through at about the third to fourth week of curing.

The smell from the second crop has improved rapidly and is very strong after 3 weeks curing. It takes 3 zip lock bags to stop most of the smell from coming through. Not good weed to travel with ! Shot of it here …
Kafka
Effect is very stimulating in small doses. I found I could concentrate on jobs I was working on quite well. The ability to move isn’t restricted in any way at low amounts. Nice 'up' lift from it which allows me to talk crap for hours. Turns my eyes bright red.

Janis 3 ( stretchy )

Shot of the mother plant shown. Note the slight purple colouring on the leaf stems and branches. Colouring has been there since the cutting was taken 7 months ago.
Kafka
Have grown this a few times. Diaries are

here and more recently the mother was flowered here

Taller growing plant than Janis 4. Quite leggy whilst in veg growth she also stretch’s during flowering. Slows down though at about weeks 4-5. Stems and stalks turn purple colour with age and increased onset of flowering. Very similar to Janis 4 other wise. I would almost hesitate in calling it a different variation from Janis 4.

Much like the other variations of Janis this plant seems to love to branch.

A little less leafy than Janis 4.

Trichome formation is pretty thick and the buds again have a nice lavender / berry smell when the plant is brushed. I would allow this one to flower for 63 days. She’ll look like this when ready …

Smoke report for Janis 3

Again I saved a few buds and allowed them to cure for 6 weeks

This has a ‘minty’ taste about it. Berry is there too which makes it a little odd. A nice odd though. Again it’s very floral, similar to Janis 4.

The effect is very similar to Janis 3, just the taste is different. Shot here …

Janis 2 ( tall and stretchy )

The grow was not documented but this plant was cut at 60 days into flowering. Pics of the buds are shown in this thread. Plant was topped at a few weeks age.

This variation of Janis is very stretchy. She continues to stretch up until the 6th week of flowering. Quite different looking plant from the other variations. Longer, thinner leaves a far fewer of them. Taller and quicker growing. Shot of the mother plant here:
Kafka
This variation has more bulk to the flower formation which look to me like that of a white widow. Buds fill out in dense clusters with a large amount of trichomes.

No where near as much leaf as other variations of Janis.

Flowers appear blue / grey almost and have the slight lavender / berry smell when brushed. White pistils usually.

Same applies about branches being weighed down and bending as with other variations.

I have since managed to grow out this variation a few times and it would seem the average time to chop it is about 63-65 days. She should look something like this …

Smoke Report for Janis 2

Shot of the dry and slightly manicured bud. Can’t see the purple / grey tint which is seen in the shot above. Very distinct smell much like the other variations. Sweet almost sickly smelling. More buds from this plant shown on this thread.

Final bud shown ...
Kafka
This variation has gained a slight white widow taste. Again it’s very floral and makes me want to sneeze. Smooth smoke though, doesn’t irritate my throat like past white widows smokes.

Smell is sugary with a slightly sickly edge about it.

Smoke and effect wise it is similar to Janis 4, only stronger. Has a slight widow taste but it is quite nice. Berry taste is there but doesn’t leap at you. This is after a 6 week cure.

Conclusion

Each variation of Janis looked slightly different but they all have a few similarities. Here’s a few:

 Branch. I think all would do well in a Screen of Green setup.
 Cannot hold its own weight unsupported once laden with flowers
 Smells berry ish during flowering. Shorter plants more so.
 Have white pistils
 Good trichome development
 Reasonable yield
 Good taste and high
 Easy plants to clone and grow
 No hermaphrodite plants (and mine were stressed a good amount)

Thanks to FDM for releasing the strain, it’s a must try if you like a berry tasting smoke which packs a good punch.

Thanks G wink.gif

With any luck the reports will get better as time goes on. Not had much prior when it comes to strain reporting on a public level whistling.gif No doubt there will be a few additions here and there as time goes on too.

Fantastic effort K, we have too few detailed post-grow reports and it's something I'm keen to do when I've grown out enough of any one variety to have something useful to say.
I've got a packet of Janis waiting for a future grow, hoping they turn out even half as well as yours!
