If you know of any coppicing going on in your area which has an underwood of hazel, blackthorn, hawthorn etc,. you will find that most of the harvesting is done between oct-april. New growth begins in spring with vigour and the freshly cut coups are left alone for 8+ years. Interesting point, the freshly harvested coups are often small areas within large woodlands with good light all year long, the growth is vigorous in these coups and by spring it will be filled with a mixture of underwood saplings, bramble and nettle - the confusion of species makes it difficult to single anything out visualy. These coups are often way out in the backwoods, hardly visited except 8 year harvest cycles. If you know of any hazel copse in your area, look out for freshly cleared coups in the spring.
