How about this for a small SCROG setup? 1-2 plants.

user posted image

The height I have to work with is 32 inches. I'm thinking of a foot for the plants i.e the screen is a foot above the compost and at least 18 inches between the 400 HPS light and the growing tips.
Does anyone know of a way of growing in shallow compost to save some height btw?

After all this I dont have much height to play with so I was thinking of raising the whole thing on some sort of blocks like this:

I was thinking the gap would serve as an air intake and I'd have an outake at the top, this would at least follow the laws of convection, rather like those metal dustbin incinerators you see. Do you think this could work?
If I have a shaded hole near the top for the hot air to escape could I get away without having a fan? I wouldnt of thought too much light would escape at the botom of the box as thats the whole point of SCROG.

I think you would have probs with a 400 in there with a good extracter fan let alone without one,no chance, something wardrobe size would be more suited to the job, even then you would need good extraction my m8 grew in a wardrobe using a 400 and he ran his extractor 24-7 and in the summer his temps were getting-33 to 35 also your gonna get high humidity which is great for breeding mould.Have another scout round the house and see what other furniture to rip apart.

In a box that size i'de ditch the idea of the 400 and go for 3 enviro's(2red, 1blue)...

You'de be able to get away with a 4" fan, and it'de do a single scrogged plant beautifully.

That's my 2p worth anyway wink.gif ....

Check my link for my old enviro grow.... smile.gif

Like ouncyboy & raz, I'd say a 400w HID light is too much for that space. I'd guess you have about 2-3 sq ft area to play with. To me that suggests a single envirolite - they are 125 watts and therefore cover an ideal area of 2.5 sq ft if you go by the 'rule' of 50 watts per square foot area.

Using an envirolite instead of an HID means you can get the plants closer to the light without burning, so headroom shouldn't be too much of a problem. I'd go for one or 2 plants, say 8-10 inch tall pots, another 10-12 inches up to the net, which leaves about 14 inches for the buds and light. Have the scrog net a bit lower if you think height will be a problem - a lower net just makes it a bit trickier to get among the plants to do any training & pruning.

I'd still have a fan in there, even if it's just a PC fan extracting air (but don't tell Vlad I said that wink.gif ).

Stealth doesn't seem to be a problem to you otherwise you'd be worried about light leaks. Why not build a box and then you can make it whatever dimensions you like?

Cheers for the advice chaps. My HPS light is already winging its way to me - apparently - I looked around FOCUS the other day for wood to make into a SCROG box but the even the chip board was so expensive,it would cost the same to by a wardrobe any way.
I'm moving soon so I dont want to get a wardrobe yet-those flat-pack jobbies dont stand up well to being moved about.
I did spy a mouldy old wardrobe in my garage though...mmm... cool.gif
What sort of height should I be aiming for with a 400W HPS then?

I'd go for a cheapie secondhand large wardrobe - with that bloody great light you can cover 8sq ft, so you're looking for one 4x2 or therabouts..........because of the light, you'll have to use the full height of the cupboard, because you're going to lose a couple of feet for the light and air gap.............then you'll need a good 5" duct fan and filter (uk420 shop)........ smoke.gif
Like everyone else, I'd have advised enviros for a small space, hps are buggers to cool in a small box! (if you have a chance, return the hps......... whistling.gif )

For a shallow compost you can ude reaydy-made growht sacks containing the necessary nutes for growth. All you need to do is to cut small holes in the bottom of the sack to let the excess water run off. You can plant at least 3 to 5 plants in a 75l sack.

The height of the sack is only about 10-15cm. You can also use regular soil or compost sacks laid flat side down. Then you have to fertilise regularly to ensure a good growth, but otherwise you can do as mentioned earlier.

I'm sure there are several UK manufacturers of these products, but I include a Finnish link here: `http://www.biolan.fi/suomi/puutarhanhoito/multatuotteet_maanparannusaineet/lisatietoja_kasvusakki.htm´ In these pages there are some crappy exaples of the growth sacks in action. They truly decrease the vertical space needed compared for example for pots. Highly recommended for limited vertical space!! Also useful for outdoor growing in summer!
