Alright all?
Just been looking at my rather sorry bedraggled triffids in the garden and i cant help wandering if they'll even make it to september?
The temperature has dropped, the wind has picked up and the rain just keeps on falling. If the sun does appear its briskly followed by a short thunderstorm round here.
I fear the worse for our outdoor crops this year. God how i wish id gone greenhouse again!

Slightly disheartened,
Jammin

Hah. Believe it or not, as I write this I hear on the news that the weather has caused more damage to farming this year than the foot-and-mouth outbreak did years ago....
.....Maybe Jammin is right after all.......

Any protection from the rain will help as long as the wind can still get to them, have to make sure that any cover is peaked and taught enough not to hold water.

taken a turn for the worse today, only around 26c. my fear's the exact opposite. i'm trying to place my plants where they can get some partial shade as i've been warned about too much direct sunlight damaging the plants. i could put up some kind of canopy but this would be a mission and a half, so they're all getting planted close to trees for some natural protection. fingers crossed when they're big enough they will provide some cover for each other. i will keep one in the garden though and construct a little tent for it with some netting that cuts out 30% of the sunlight and let you know if it makes any difference. as for getting eaten alive, i'm more concerned about my plants getting chewed than me.

I must admit that compared to previous years, my plants are about a third of the size that they should be, if we had some decent sun during the summer.
However, this can be offset by the fact that I have more females than in previous years (10 out of 13 plants) and that it now looks like we might get some decent flowering weather for the next few weeks and the crop should be good.
I for one will be praying for an Indian summer and may I suggest that you all join me.

Looking good manali,
that is about the amount of bush I would expect from my plants as a minimum, but this year they have grown leggy and not very bushy at all.
I will try and remember to get some shots of them over the weekend (I've said this b4 and always forget). The bud is really beginning to take shape on most of them, and I am looking forward to the harvest and first j.
I noticed this morning that the one remaining 'purple star' is beginning to change colour as well.

Well, I remembered to get some shots of em over the weekend and they are looking damn fine(if I do say so myself).
Only trouble, not being a photo or net whiz;
I didn't realise that they had to be files of a certain size. And I haven't the time at work to resize and edit.
I don't know how to down load them into the site gallery, and not sure with my low post count whether I can even do so?
Should anyone like to see a couple of the pics (and is on broadband) please PM me your email and I will try and send them to you. (I will only send 2/3 at a time because of file size).

Wee could all be in luck with the UK weather....thinking positive here!
From met office, long range forecast:
Valid for 30 August 2004 to 26 September 2004
High pressure is expected to build over southern parts of the UK and remain established throughout the period. This is expected to give fine, warm, sunny weather across this area, with below average rainfall and near or above normal temperatures. Northern areas are likely to see more unsettled conditions with near average temperatures, rainfall and sunshine.

I've always understood that cold nights didn't present to many problems.
If you think of some of the areas in the world where it is grown as a crop (no i don't include my back garden or cheese farmers guerilla

) in some of those areas it does get very cold at night due to the altitude they are at etc.
Great news on the High pressure and the warm sunny days.

You're right, they don't, until we get frosty nights and I'm just hoping those don't come early. Some of the more northern areas in UK are already down to lows of 4C. What a mad year.

This years temps and weather have certainly been mad m8.
I would be very surprised if we had a frost b4 Nov and most crops should be in by then (sorry to you Scotties if you get them sooner). I am also fairly sure that when I used to grow mine 'guerilla style' that I had left some until after the first slight frosts and it didn't harm them too much.
If recent years are anything to go by, we get a cold spell about mid Nov and then a mild Dec & early Jan b4 the real frosts begin mid Jan and through Feb. I also recall that last winter, I hardly had to light my greenhouse/tunnel heater at all.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to about another 4-6 weeks of this lovely sunshine

and after that it can do what it likes cos my crop will be in and drying by then.

Unless your plants are in a very exposed area I would'nt worry to much. When I used to grow my plants earthbound, the stems used to get over an inch thick and would withstand 99% of British wind. I assume yours have done similar.
Good luck

From what i gather from the met office web sites 4 week forcast , starting from the 13th september , the next couple of days will be unsettled but after that high pressure sets in and we should have some nice weather for a couple of weeks.
