Hiya fellow tokers ...,

I have seen a few threads bout building yur own ballast about .. and none of them actually give u all the info u need .. I am thinkin bout building my own as i dont have enough money to buy 1 atm !! And my seedlings are already 11 days old . I have a 400 watt Sont- HPS its Mogul socket ... i also have a contactor which i made myself from yur DIY section. What i need to know is the specs for the Transformer, Ignitor and Capacitor .. i am on 240V mains !! Any ideas?
I found a site with some wiring diagrams for building yur own ballasts but no specs sad.gif

Cheers

Unless you are a qualified electrician, then I wouldn't even consider opening a ballast, let alone building one mate.

They pack some big voltage and will give you no second chance if you do somthing wrong sad.gif

Blatantly!

Those things have some big fuck off capacitors in them for the initial surge of power, and they are storing a hell of a lot more than 240 volts. It enough to kill you very dead.

They hold that charge for up to a couple of years after they were switched off as well.

You also have to consider what you are going to store it in. Plastic boxes will melt with a grow ballast inside it (I know this because my first HPS ballast was in a plastic ABS case).

By the time you get all the bits you need to do it safely, you might as well have bought one anyway.

that article is highly irresponsible... pooh.gif

Now, even though it will work without it (and even though it got left out of all the illustrations), I recommend grounding the socket and power cords.

there is no way anyone should build an ungrounded ballast, its not something you "recommend" thats just stupid....

Now, you could conceivably just put the ballast parts onto a piece of wood

...thats stupider though pinch.gif

it simply isnt safe to build a ballast from simple instructions. to put it bluntly if you have the required knowledge of electronics to build a ballast you dont need instructions as they are so bloody simple therefore IMO /any/ instructions for building a ballast are inherently dangerous and anyone writing such instructions is irresponsible (even if they cover every aspect such as grounding and enclosures unlike the bollocks linked to above).
